The bands best release. John Sykes is a revelation and gave the band the shot in the arm it needed.

It's my turn now. This album have my second favourite line-up.Classic songs like'Slow','Guilty'and'Love'showed that Cov's reached maturity and comercial aproach without compromizing themselves as renomated musicians.Sykes shows a impecable guitar work, Cozy shows his hard hittig style, rest in peace .Keybords are weak but who cares. Some tunes are boring, but this is an 80 out of 100.I also saw them in 85 on Rock in Rio,Slide's tour .It's a good starting point for a Whitesnake collection

This is their best album. It features 3 guitarists (including flashy new-boy John Sykes),and it is an excellent collection of bluesy hard rock. The title track, while lyrically juvenile perhaps,is a great example of Coverdale's sexually-charged songwriting;rockers like Give Me More Time and Guilty of Love are similarly enjoyable.Of particular note is Love Ain't No Stranger, one of the band's best songs and an example of a great power ballad before bands like Poison and Warrant hijacked the term.

I have this one in a different order, it changes depending on the countries, perhaps? Anyways, I prefer to have Slide it in as the first song. It shows the ways to follow for the rest ot the album. Great!

My fav by the snake. Stands the test of time much better than 87's hairsprayed pop-metal which I loved at the time but just don't listen to much anymore. This just has a lotta heart and soul. 9.5/10

Great album from one of the better hard rock bands to dominate the 80s. Not a weak song on it. Great musicians - one of Whitesnake's best line-ups (Coverdale, Sykes, Powell, Murray). I still would recommend the 1987 self-titled album but this one is definitely worth having. Simply put: a classic 80s hard rock album.

there are two versions of the album, one with Mick Moody on guitar and one where they replaced moody's guitarplay with Sykes parts. My copy has a different order of the tracks and lists Moody as guitarplayer. Is the Sykes version better? Cause i've seen that one, and i'd like to hear his play, but is it worth $16,- when you already own the other version?

I have heard the John Sykes version of this album only. This is a strong album, giving hints of what was to come. Still retains their bluesy sound of old while adding more flashy guitar work. 8/10

A quite bluesy album. Not as good as slip of the tongue and 1987 album but contain hits like love ain't no stranger and guilthy of love,my favourite whitesnake song! Highly recommended for people who loves blues metal bands like cinderella and great white although this one hardly ranks as metal or as heavy as long cold winter or stick it.

Jack-which version are you listening too (there are 2)? The American version features John Sykes and is much heavier and metallic thean the original UK domestic release.

So which album is better the one w/Sykes or w/Moody (my guess would be Sykes) and how dow you tell the two albums apart? Different artwork or track listing?
|
From: Rockhead |
Date: July 19, 2004 at 10:57 |
Track listing and artwork are the same, The main difference is the US version was remixed and had John Sykes provide lead and additional guitar to the already recorded tracks. The original has more in common soundwise with the classic Come and Get It and Ready and Willing (very bluesy). This was the 1st product on the Geffen label in the states. The Sykes version rocks!!

Rockhead-i listen to both version and i think the american version is a bit better:the guitar sounding and guitar riff. But all in all, i like both of them very much and both are whitesnake clasiics.

I have heard both versions, but only own the re-mixed one, and can't quite remember the otherone, so I can't compare. This album anyway strted to show the direction where Whitesnake were heading: American markets. Still very good album. Nice songs and all, and somehow back then the change back then felt right. For me the last classic Whitesnake-record. After this, Whitesnake were just David Coverdale/Geffen-project. Still making nice records though. 9/10

A fantastic line-up. Cozy could rip you apart and put you back together again without you even noticing. This was to be the Whitesnake of new. What a powerful disc! Great sound without any compromise whatsoever.

I always thought that the drumparts by Cozy on the original release were just too prominent (too heavy) in the mix. With the extra layer of guitars added by John Sykes things are more in balance. So i think the (usa)second release is better than the first. Damn good record.9/10

Finally, after each disc becoming a stepping stone in the bands career, Coverdale found the winning combination for high tech boogie rock. Essential to any hard rock collection.

hmm, not sure which is better, this or the 87 release, I do love that one, but I just listened to this again, and I think this one for me beats the 87 by a tiny little hair, only because the look gimmicky pretty boy think did not overcome this album or 87 for that matter, the band was revamped after the 87 album was recorded, this one is just great rock with no image stuff, and a bit different then the real bluesy stuff, a mix of both!!!

Fantastic blues oriented hard rock album. One of the decades best efforts and one of my all time favourite hard rock albums. This one sits perfect between the more bluesy Whitesnake and the more commercial breakthrough album 1987. Without a doubt in my mind the best Whitesnake album. Standing In The Shadow, Love Ain't No Stranger, Give Me More Time, All Or Nothing are all spectacular but the best track of the album must be Guilty Of Love.

What first comes to my mind is who likes RAINBOW or AC/DC does like this too. I like them all only very mediocre. But everything of those are no bad (late 70s/early 80s) bluesy hard rock.

I'm more a "hairsprayed pop-metal" lover as Blue Charvel states so well ,) However, the most-mentioned songs "Guilty of love" & mostly "Love is no stranger" are my favourites, followed by the AC/DC-alikes "Slide it in" & "Spit it out".

This album is a true powerhouse, at least in the US version which is beefed up with the guitar licks of John Sykes. You can test your speakers on the hitting hard-drumwork of the late Cozy Powell. Just try songs like Slow an'easy, Love ain't no stranger, Gambler or Standing in the shadow on your stereo system, you'll be blown away. A classic!

The US Remix version is the one to get. It's meatier and more 80s sounding. This is the start of the more commercial Whitesnake that latest for a trilogy of fine albums. I know a lot of people prefer the bluesier, early Whitesnake, but I am not one of them. The three songs with Love in the title would be my favourite tracks, but they aren't alone as quality tunes. Any self-respecting hard rock fan has this album, 1987 and Slip of the Tongue in their collection. If you don't yet, get the 35 year anniversary issue as I can confirm the remix adds new life to the tracks and makes them sound even better. Grade A.

A few years back, tesnake came out with a six-disc box set of this album, including both the UK and US mixes of the album, AND an all-new 2019 mix. All three had different track sequences, naturally. For me, the new mix is the best one, combining the punch of the 1984 US version with the rawness of the UK mix. Absolutely fantastic drum sound, one of the best I've heard anywhere, with a snare that bangs instead of taps, and a kick-drum that booms instead of clicks, like a kick-drum does when you're right in the room with it. The other three discs are live tracks from period, demos with David's commentary, and some studio outtakes, including one featuring David and Bernie(?) snorting coke and acting stupid. (It's labeled something like "David and Bernie Fighting A Cold.")

I am also one of those who prefer the later incarnation of Whitesnake. To me, albums like Ready An' Willing and Saints An' Sinners just sound very, very square—dorky, almost—even for their time.

Possibly the greatest rock album ever. Every song is really good to great, my favorites are Side it in, Love Ain't no Stranger and Hungry for Love, but the rest of the songs are just so good. The band is tight, my favorite drummer Cozy is a maniac. Must have for any rock lover. I gave this a 100.

Half of the songs co-written by excellent guitarist Mel Galley, meaning he was very important to this nice album. He did well with Phenomena, with his brother and some all stars, but still it was very unfortunate that he damaged his arm. In the songwriting department, Sykes and Galley were the best DC ever employed, yet they only got to stay for such a short time. Slow an' Easy, was a cool song written by Micky Moody (his autobiography Snakes & Ladders is good read!), other than that, Slide It In was Galley's. DC was of course a great singer, but his treatment of band members seemed not any better than Dio's or Ozzy's. Even Bernie Marsden (who wrote Here I Go Again) talked about it. But while there are bands with a better HR policy, like Leps and AC/DC, yet still the whole rock biz can often be rather "cut throat", so you better study the papers before you sign 'em... Both skilled drummers Cozy Powell AND one of history's best Aynsley Dunbar quit when DC stopped their payments...

https://www.udiscovermusic.com/artist/whitesnake/ Nice pic of original album's line-up. Soon Neil Murray was back and Sykes was added too on the US re-mix. Here's a rare shot of next drummer Aynsley Dunbar recording Whitesnake 1987 album at Little Mountain Studios, he indeed was very quick and precise in Vancouver already back in October 1985. https://se.pinterest.com/pin/372391462942423406/
