|I was never a big fan of glam but this is one album that I love. All the songs are catchy and well written and recorded. Hope this gets re-released on CD someday.

|One of, if not the best glam cds out there!!! Too bad Island records screwed these guys. They would have been huge. Well, they are huge to me, maybe I should say more well known. If you like glam, you should get this one no matter how much it costs!
||Date: January 2, 2002 at 9:43|
|Just got this one, and well, i'm speechless, this has to be the best sleaze glam CD EVER! Perfect! 10/10. Believe the hype, its TRUE

|A perfect album of glam rock And no more words!
||Date: January 8, 2002 at 10:26|
|The way Davy and his boys introduced themselves to glam fans worldwide back in '89 should have made them instant super stars. There's not a weak track in a 50 mile radius and if you haven't heard this album than either beg, borrow or steal any copy you can get your hands on! A true classic!! 10/10 Check out what's going on with Davy these days at www.davyvain.com

|Possibly the best example of sleazy glam metal ever produced!
||Date: February 18, 2002 at 11:41|
|I bought this tape years ago and was blown away by them. i got to see them here in rochester when they came to support that album. Very cool. Too bad island records didnt know what to do with them. I found the cd recently for $7 so i had to get it.

|Forget about being one of the best glam album, this is one of the best albums ever. In any catagory. Every song is perfect.

|How many times do you wish a band would live up to its projection? Vain is the answer. One of the best bands of the later 80's! Vains songs are full of passion, stuffed with pride and packed with puking power to match there leather.This band should be at the top of any collection and those that file in alpha-order make an exception.
||Date: May 15, 2002 at 15:22|
|No offence to their fans, but I thought the vocals clashed with the music. Davey has a great voice and the guitars are great. What I don't like is the fact that the band is kicking major ass and Davey is singing a ballad. For the actual ballads this was alright, but for the rockers I think the vocals clashed with the rest of the band. I think they could have been big with some major adjustments. The talent was there for sure.
||Date: May 16, 2002 at 3:53|
|Well this is just.....not very good. The title track is great, but the other songs are rather generic and the vocals, though mildly haunting, are really pretty weak.
||Date: May 31, 2002 at 23:41|
|This album is pretty cool, some catchy tunes, solid beats, and some good guitar action a must for glam fans.

|Just the Best Glam Rock Band i have ever heard!!
||Date: June 28, 2002 at 22:05|
|I like this album, Some of the vocals can be annoying sometimes, but the majority of the time Davy Vain kicks ass! The guitar players compliment each other very well and they help make a respectable, well rounded glam album.

|Awesome album. Finishes as strong as it starts. The hooks in Down For the Third Time sink deeply. Incredible and, imo, not their finest. How do people not know who they are????

|How can someone could possibly put toghether hipnotic vocals,grooves,atmosphere,quite gothic dark gloomy good hard riffing and solid as hell drums.Intriguing,seductive and misterious melodies that melts in your ear like butter in your mouth!!I'm sorry that Davy was not able to put toghether again such musical quality on his next records!Great record,you may not realize duo to the quality of the songs that it is a glam band.Favourite tune 'Smoke and Shadows'!!!!

|Absolutely Awesome...This has to be one of the best albums I've ever heard. There isn't a track on here I don't dig...Favs are: Secrets, 1000 Degrees, Aces, Laws Against Love, and Down For the Third Time. The second unreleased album 'All Those Strangers' is also highly recommended. If you don't have 'No Respect', go out and get it...worth every penny. This is in my top 5 albums for sure!

||Date: December 17, 2002 at 12:55|
|Jarett,to answer your question,Steven Adler was in a band called 'Roadcrew' with Davy Vain.This was a short lived band but a few of their songs ended up on the Vain release 'Move On It'.

|Words fail me when i have to describe the absolute excellence of this album, it is the most raw and emotive album of all time, it even blows the socks off 'Appetite For Destruction' - definatly an album to fuck to! Would love to see it re-released someday on CD! xxx

|No fillers - just *killers* !!! One of the best glam/sleaze albums ever ....
||Date: March 4, 2003 at 8:49|
|Great stuff here. Its been 14 years and I still know the words. Melodic, catchy, sleeze. Davy Vain's voice and phrasing is perfect for this style of music. Without You wins my vote as best power ballad ever. If this would've been out 2 to 3 years earlier, I think they would've been huge. Sleeze/Glam at its peak and just in time to get at least some recognition.
||Date: March 21, 2003 at 16:40|

|i just got vain's no respect at a local pawn shop. i'm listening to it right now. reminds me of early guns'n'roses and early l.a. guns. about roadcrew, i've heard that steven adler was in roadcrew both before and after guns'n'roses. i've always heard that slash was also in roadcrew (before guns'n'roses) and it seems like i've heard that duff mckagan was, too. actually, i've heard that duff mckagan RECORDED with over 30 bands before guns'n'roses, including fartz, fastbacks, etc.
||Date: April 9, 2003 at 10:26|
|What makes this disc so killer is Davy vains voice. A few people are critical of his vocals but I think that what makes vain stand out from all the other glam bands, they are different and distinctive. I bought the in Australia in early 1990 and my friend bought Tigertailz Berzerk at the same time which is also a kick ass CD. Favourite tracks on this CD are Secrets, Beat the bullet, who's watching you, aces I better stop before I name every track. Totally killer no filler. Jay from Australia
||Date: May 2, 2003 at 16:01|
|The best glam album ever, no fillers-only killers!!

|Absolutely outstanding! Had a burned copy but just picked up the original for $36 (the most expensive CD I've bought to date) and it was worth every penny! This has easily become my favorite disc in my collection. I remember seeing the video for 'Beat the Bullet' and not picking it up then...bad move, great album!
||Date: October 19, 2003 at 4:20|
|I think this album and the Bulletboys S/T are the 2 most over-rated albums on this web-site. I just can't see why everyone raves over it, it's just poorly produced punky rock that I've tried again and again to get into, but I just can't.
|From: Great Dane
||Date: October 19, 2003 at 12:35|
|Hey David, I know exactly what U mean. And these guys never made it big did they .....no they remained beeing a wannabe band...........................But then again, I would buy it before any Poison albums, like Wadelink wrote.
||Date: October 20, 2003 at 0:44|
|David, production is not the band's fault. Try buying Japanese pressings if you want enhanced production . I love Bulletboys S/T but can't stand Vain too much. I don't hate it but it does nothing for me. Oh well, can't please everybody.
||Date: November 11, 2003 at 15:53|
|Vain really isnt my cup of tea...they are ok 'Who's Watching You' and 'Beat The Bullet' just feel weak to me as for 'Secrets' not a good intro to the album...
||Date: January 9, 2004 at 14:45|
|Just spent nearly 3 weeks trying to download this legendary album from the net. HURRAH! I have been trying to get my paws on this for 12 years believe it or not! This album is the best of it's type and stands out today as an absolute classic! Don't believe any bad comment, search it out and enjoy!! The album was recorded live, but in a studio enviroment, no laying down of drum tracks and then everyone has as many cracks to get their bit right, this is the way it should have been done!! Thank you
||Date: March 3, 2004 at 14:20|
|The last truly great 'glam sleaze' record...dripping with sheer class. Brilliant songs, great vocals and tons of attitude. They totally blew Skid Row offstage at Hammersmith Odeon. Sadly they never got a chance to play the U.K. again. Beg, borrow or steal this c.d......it's incredible!
||Date: March 7, 2004 at 15:20|
|Great cd- almost everyone I've ever played this one for loved it. Pure glam so it was a total trip when i found out that Davy Vain was the one who produced the first two Death Angel cds and bassist Ashley Mitchell designed Death Angel's logo. Normally the bay area thrash bands despised glam but obviously Death Angel got along pretty good with Vain.

|Killer album. I've tried to find the CD myself for quite some time now, keep losing the fleabay auctions when one comes up. One of the greatest of the '80s sleaze glam recordings; I grew up on this stuff and never grew out of it.
||Date: April 15, 2004 at 18:12|

|THANK YOU TIM ! You're right couldn't put my finger on it before. While I agree w/ Tim, I do like this album my fav's are Who's Watchin' You, Ready and I love Beat the Bullet! Saw them live in Hollywood in the early 90's and they killed! Much better than on record.

|A fantastic cd. Everyone review is right on the money. This is one of the best glam metal releases ever. A true diamond in the ruff. It gets many spins in my cd player. Anyone that Likes Motley Crue and Dokken and bands like this get this. My favorite songs are Secrets, Beat The Bullet, and Who's Wathcing You. Good videos they made for mtv too...

|Vain got the biggest and best hair in the 80's among all the hair metal band! This album is very good too,especially beat the bullet,one of my favourite vain song. Davy looks alot like steven tyler!i wonder if they are related or something!
||Date: August 5, 2004 at 22:41|
|6/10. I don't like Davy's voice or the production. Davy sounds like a cat in heat, and a producyion is too small. Some catchy songs though.
||Date: August 14, 2004 at 0:55|
|This album is really excellent, too bad they did not continue with the same style on the following albums.
||Date: August 14, 2004 at 23:34|
|For me, this is without doubt one of the finest moments of the whole genre. NO filler at all and way too many gems to even begin trying to note. A superb album and I have nothing bad at all to say about it. Killer hard rock and haunting ballads and everything perfect inbetween. 9.8/10
||Date: August 22, 2004 at 13:24|
|Right up there with Pretty Boy Floyd, The Bang Gang, and Posion. Davy vain's voice is wicked awesome for glam rock and they have so much melody and hooks that it becomes infectious to listen to. A must for any rock n roll diehard.
||Date: September 6, 2004 at 4:47|
|Well, instead of telling my point of view about this masterpiece,i must testify the huge surprise my girlfriend felt by listening to this album. She normally prefers mainstream music, but when 'One Thousand Degrees' hit her ears, she asked me to play it louder! Then she started asking me about the band and at the end, I had to copy the cd for her, to use it in her car! Only Whitesnake's '1987' had such an 'honour' before! If you ask me, this is another proof of the huge value of this album.
||Date: September 20, 2004 at 18:57|
|i think Rock will never reach high levels like this one any more;this album is pure Art:there are passion,rage,love,sex,beauty,decadence and any other wild instinct the human soul could raiseavy Vain is a great artist and simply a genius.

|Someone help me out here. Is that song the one that goes '...when it comes to you ain't got no self-respect, no respect for myself baby'? 'Cause if it does, it rocks! Used to hear it a lot a couple of years back in the 80s room in XLs in Birmingham. Does anyone else miss XLs?
|From: Cotton C. Lover

||Date: January 13, 2005 at 16:04|
|Nanteau. I have it, and I think its WAY overrated. The production Sucks BIG TIME, and there are two or three tracks that are good. Spend your money on something else.
||Date: January 13, 2005 at 22:53|
|I think this cd isn't too bad, the production is very flat like you say. I do enjoy 'ready' and 'beat the bullet' though - theyre cool songs and 'Without you' is a pretty decent ballad. Hmm but thats only 3.... Well to be honest they are the only songs i listen to these days - none of the others made it to my ipod. So I'd say if you get it for real cheap it may be worth it just for those three tracks. Would never pay $30 in a million years. I much prefer the Euro sound to this LA nightclub stuff
||Date: January 14, 2005 at 13:39|
|Thanks for your responds--I thought it's typically US-Arenarock with bad production and not too much melody in it like so many indies going round here, e.g. BABY TALK (there are some exceptions of good US-Rock like VAUGHN & BON JOVI etc. of course). Maybe I get the chance to listen to it than I can tell what I think about it actually.
||Date: January 14, 2005 at 18:44|
|Nanteau, when Roxas said LA music he didnt mean Stadium Rock (Firehouse, Danger Danger style) he meant LA club scene stuff like 'Look what the cat dragged in' Poison, Pretty Boy Flyod, Blackboard Jungle, Faster Pussycat, Sweet FA... Sleezey Glam. It's a great Glam album a very poor Arena rock album.
||Date: February 2, 2005 at 5:16|

|Excellent band, excellent songs and I was even fortunate enough to see them live in LA back in the 80's. I love this band.
||Date: February 6, 2005 at 10:25|
|One of the best debut albums ever released, a master piece.
||Date: February 7, 2005 at 13:35|
|maybe One of the'worst'debut albums ever released!!Shitty production,all songs sound similar,really crap!I think'move on it'is much better even if I really don't like it,too.Try to listen No Respect band,that's a masterpiece,not this one!
||Date: February 7, 2005 at 17:14|
|No way z4roxx-this album rules, the production was ok but Davy Vain's production was much better on the first two Death Angel discs. I know what Tim is saying with how the vocals didn't seem to match the music but once it grew on me I wouldn't change a thing-all around awesome album. BTW-I'd be happy to give No Respect a try-wanna send me a copy?
||Date: February 8, 2005 at 12:45|
|Dave,we'll can speak about this one for one month,IMO is really crap!!BTW I don't like Vain I think,but in the first Death Angel cd's there was the same producer??I didn't understood very well this concept,sorry man!Death Angel rule!!!!!Not Vain!!ahahaha!!Sorry man but I don't have the possibility to send you No Respect cd,but you can find the re-issue for few bucks on ebay.I have the original but re-issue contains bonus...No Respect one of the best!!!!!Regards...
||Date: February 8, 2005 at 12:46|
|One more thing,the comparrison with No Respect was only for name/title joke!!ahaha!!No Respect sound like Skid Row or Nasty Idols,not like Vain...fortunately!!ahahahaa!!!
||Date: February 8, 2005 at 21:05|
|Z4roxx-go look at the first Death Angel cd-co-produced by Davy Vain-the connection went father than that too-Ashley Mitchell the bass player designed Death Angel's logo. So that's where i compare the production-Davy Vain has produced some decent albums. I believe he did 'Frolic' also.
||Date: February 9, 2005 at 12:38|
|Indeed Dean,I'll go to check this fact when I go home!!Seen last year Death Angel live...maybe the greatest band on live!!Wow!!Unfortunately Gus Pepa is out of the band....
||Date: February 9, 2005 at 17:43|
|Yeah-I've seen Death Angel well over ten times most recently at last year's Milwaukee Metalfest-if you like them you'll love my band. BTW sorry to everybody for letting this get off topic. Z4roxx- if you're on the message board PM me.

|One of the best sleaze glam albums I've heard. Davey Vain has such a unique voice (easily recognizable) and Vain, as a band, do a very nice job of doing their own thing within the genre. '1000 Degrees,' 'Aces,' 'No Respect,' 'Laws Against Love,' and 'Without You' (ballad) are the highlights, but there are no wasted tracks anywhere here. Very good combo of blues, balls, and metal. Never heard any of the follow-ups but this one sets a high standard. Don't think twice about getting this one!
|From: Nick C

|Totally brilliant THE ONLY U.S. GLAM BAND of this era to mean anything. Delete Poison, Faster Pussycat, and the other band waggon jumpers..this band walked it like they talked it. Rocks like a b*stard and will leave you wanting more. Beat the Bullet kills!! For you people who missed it first time around grab it now as it's been re-released....dunno if it's been remixed or not! Island were complete jerks to let this band go!

|For those who talk crap about Davy Vain's voice, think-Would you rather hear a guy who sounds like everyother guy in a band you've ever heard, or a shred of uniqueness and personality? I'll take originality anyday. I think he sounds cool, and he definately has his own style. When you hear Vain, you know it by Davy's voice.

|This is Still a Killer. Does anybody remember the band Shame? I think Brad Shame was the lead singer...I think they kinda sounded like Vain....I might be wrong though...just can't recall.....

|Well I now own this cd as well as 'move On It' and 'Fade'. While 'No Respect' is definitely the best of the 3 by a looong shot, it still doesn't blow me away like it seems to have done for most of the commentors here. It is certainly worth owning but it is still only average IMO....

|O.K, now this is serious shit. This is the GREATEST GLAM METAL album of all time! Million times better than Motley, Ratt, Cinderella. Damn every song here really kicks my ass everytime I hear 'em, etc etc. This is the real deal man! A really must have! 10/10

|Ok,I must say it's a very good cd in its genre,unfortunately it's not my fave kind of music,but the band is excellent.Maybe for my tastes the last one it's my fave....

|one of my favorite albums ever by any band!! It's so great I can't describe it! Check it out! Pure sleaze glam with an unique voice

|Honestly, one of the best glam metal albums on all time. More to the point, one of the best rock albums period. Every song sticks like fly paper. I have played it many, many times and I still can't get enough. If you dig the genre, it is a MUST have. Vain is very consistent with the quality of their releases. I can only hope it continues......'I've got'em, ACES!!!'

|I dug this one out of the "Archives" and guess what??? Yep, it still rocks big time! Davey Vain could flat out wail, and the guitars are edgy with just enough sleaze to make you wanna bang your head right off. I agree with prior posts: these guys would smoke F. Pussycat and Poison right off stage... They didnt have their notoriety, but they sure as hell had the chops. A definite must-have if you're looking for some great hair metal.

|Great comments from Rocker76, and I couldn't agree more. One of the very very best from a great period for rock music. The amazing thing is, Davy has still got The Voice.

|I cannot get past the vocals but I only listened to it once...maybe I'll give it another shot...but the vocals are...so...bad...

|Not much more needs to be said, but I'll say it anyway. If you are a fan of this genre this is a must have! Heck, even if you are not a fan, it is a must have! Hard for me to pick a favorite tune on this one because they are all great sleeazy rockers!
||Date: September 18, 2009 at 9:30|
|My honest opinion of this is its a perfect example of original sleaze glam, but I would not say this is one of my all time fave albums. When people say this is overrated, I feel they are being somewhat unfair, as this is most definetly an album that must stand head and shoulders over most sleaze albums, so any fan of that genre is going to rave about it. That said, I can also understand why people dont like the vocals etc, but those people probably arent avid fans of the sleaze genre. Worth checking out if you are an avid sleaze fan, or if you even have a passing interest, but its not likely to appeal to those who prefer their rock more straight ahead!

|This album has become some kind of a cult release among Glamsters and they are right to support it because this is a Glam release that was done the way it has to be done..from the heart!!!..."Secrets"(rocks pretty wild!),"Beat The Bullet"( ),"One Thousand Degrees",","No Respect","Down For The Third Time","Without You"(killer ballad) & "Ready"(hell yeah!!!) are the shots that hit me hard .92/100

|I have heard or read somewhere (well not just from one source but from quite few) that this record is a classic of hard rock.for me honestly this is good album, I like more melodic hard rock than sleaze/glam but anyhow some songs here kicks hard. my faves: down for the 3rd time, who's watchin you, beat the bullet, aces and icy.
||Date: October 13, 2011 at 19:49|
|While I think this is a fine release, I certainly am not in the camp that thinks this is some sort of masterpiece. The first three songs are dark, melodic and unique in sound but after that, the songs get very mediocre with only 1000 Degrees, No Respect and Down For Third Time standing out for me. That said, the first three are brilliant tracks and worth the purchase alone.

|I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!! A band with great vision, focus and a style and swagger all of their own. There's a lot of substance in their material... Killer tunes, great voice, twin guitar attack, white hot solo's, riff's for miles, great gang vocals. If you walked up to this album on the street it would punch the shit out of you. Still releasing great albums to this day (albeit not as classic as this one... well, combined with 'No Respect''All those Strangers'gives Vain a lethal combination). Essential!

|Musically, this is pretty standard power-chord sleaze-rock for 1989. The riffs don't really jump out at you, nor are the guitarists virtuosos. What sets Vain apart is the voice of Davy Vain. He sounds like he should be singing for a band with a shredder guitarist or something, at times seeming a bit at odds with the music. In a weird way, it often works, as his melodies give the songs a feling of darkness they miwouldn't otherwise have. I can't think of another band that has quite the same sound. The lyrics can be a little weird and clumsy at times, and what's with that picture of the guys all in a bathtub? My favorites: "Beat The Bullet," "Aces," "Down For The 3rd Time" and "Icy."
