Monumental. That's all there is to it. Combine Led Zeppelin with Neil Young and a touch of Bob Dylan, and you'll get something like this. This is entirely ballad-driven, but at no time sappy or cheesy. Every song is magnificent and Zakk's voice is in incredible form... it's such a shame that he's destroyed his voice and will never sing like this ever again. Absolutely out-standing, a record that deserved to sell millions... but never will. 10/10 |

Great album! I feel Zakk's voice is getting better with every album. His singing has come along way. His new Black Label Society album comes out on March 8th, 2005. If you like Book Of Shadows then you might like his BLS album titled 'Hangover Music Vol. VI. It's more mellow like this one. Or in AeroForceMike's words "entirely ballad-driven, but at no time sappy or cheesy." CHECK IT OUT! |

I have no idea how you can say his singing has come a long way... he sounds like a strangled moose these days. I thought Hangover Music was one of the worst and most disappointing pieces of crap I've ever heard; the off-key broken vocals were what absolutely ruined and destroyed an otherwise competent record. I can't stand B.L.S. and IMO that band has corrupted and destroyed one of my favorite artists. But back on topic, this was great... Zakk Wylde's swan-song before his descent into garbage. |

I like this. I'm not a huge Zakk or BLS fan, in fact I think his alpha male act is tired & old. That said, this has some great songs, they are well written & memorable. I was pleasantly surprised by this! His playing is great, as it is on the Ozzy records & his voice sounds like a cross between Ozzy & Duane Allman. Not a combination that is know as a "singer's singer," but he does the job efficiently. I would recommend this record even the most casual of fans. 8.0 |

Great album from a great player. It's a shame that he doesn't do this sort of stuff anymore because even my missus likes 'WAY BEYOND EMPTY'. (Who couldn't?) 8/10 |

Yeah, it's a great and solid album to me. I like the the songs generally, and the vocal too. I've been with this album for quite long, and still love it. |

Was just listening to this album again today and felt I had to lay down a comment. Simply put, this album is huge - bluesy, well written, and flawlessly performed. I'm not even a particularly big Zakk Wylde fan, but there is no denying the power of this album. Hard to pick a favorite tune, but "Road Back Home" and "Way Beyond Empty" sure rank up there. If you like modern electric/acoustic blues, you need to give this one a shot. If you are expecting and want Black Label, do NOT push play, and back slowly away from the CD player. |

pretty good release by ZAKK WYLDE who seems to have a certain approach in his songwriting & sound !this is a collection of semi-acoustic songs well performed and overall they create a nice southern feeling!Zakk seems to have a strong personality and this a good thing |

After the mixed results of Pride and Glory (great idea on paper, but held back by some weak songs and poor vocals), Zakk takes the best parts of that project and turns in the mellow, soulful Book Of Shadows. This is some of his best work, period. Despite the melancholy nature of many songs, there's a lightness to the music as of just Mea come across as leaden and plodding. I think a big part of why these songs are so successful is because for once, Zakk's singing is at its best throughout. You hear a song like "Way Beyond Empty," and damn! The man is just going for it, unself-consciously, and nailing it even with his admittedly limited voice. In later years, he would either mumble tunelessly or overextend himself into a parody, but on Book Of Shadows he hits the sweet spot most of the time. The laid-back vibe is so inviting that the moments heaviness, like the sudden, shrieking solo in "Throwin' It All Away, or the entirety of "1,000,000 Miles Away" seem jarring and out of place. |

One area Zakk has often struggled is the lyrics: while many are poignant and heartfelt, some of these, like "Sold My Soul," just seem immature and badly-written. And he still dips into the cringe-worthy pretend-southernisms, at one point singing, "When you hear yourself this song, I hope it brings yourself a smile." And there's his habit of referring to the subject of nearly every song as "child," or sometimes "son." But this is still better than some of the meaningless word salad he groans out with BLINDS. |
From: Doghouse Reilly | Date: February 10, 2020 at 13:13 |
Shit! What I was trying to say, was that there's a lightness to this music, as opposed to most BLINDS ballads, which come off as leaden and plodding. |
