Cool disc with a couple of outstanding tunes. "Sweet Sixteen" is a killer track in the vein of Faster Pussycat and "Sugar Shack" is a great mid tempo ballad that brings back ALOT of memories. You can find this pretty cheap and while some of it is filler the good songs make it more than worth it.

From: Geoff Date: August 26, 2004 at 22:07
'The only one' is an outstanding melodic rock track, and 'If I' is another fave of mine. Of the rest, this is a pretty cool hard rock CD. Nothing too amazing. I heard them in their previous band to (Forget the name) and that I actually preferred that to this - very much hair metal, and pretty cool. A more mature effort here, and quite good indeed. Just not great.

From: Dean Date: August 28, 2004 at 10:08
Geoff-it would be really cool if you figure out who their previous band was- because I'd really like to hear it.

Blackfish were formerly "The Unknown". They released the CD "Big Dreams", which is a pretty pricey indie. You can find that CD here on HH as well.

From: Dean Date: August 28, 2004 at 14:39
What do you think of these guys Whiplash? And the previously unknown Unknown as well?

From: PauloFernandes Date: August 28, 2004 at 15:55
This has to be one of the best $1/$2 cds out there, some amazing songs here, recommended if you like the Poor boys, etc. Altough the Unknown cd is very good too, i like this better. (unknown is a bit too AORish lol)

From: Carmine Rose Date: September 2, 2004 at 21:52
I saw this in a used record store a while back. I passed it up, cause the name Blackfish sounded like a grunge band. After reading what you have said, I could kick myself for not getting this!

From: Dirty D Date: April 25, 2005 at 12:58
For anyone who is interested, you can pick up Blackfish on cd for just a few bucks on ebay. I just picked up a copy for 3bucks...plus shipping...had to replace the Blackfish cassette I had (from the '90s) that got wore out

From: Cotton C. Lover Date: May 1, 2005 at 2:33
I agree with Dave. Got mine on the cheap from ebay. Think it went for about five dollars.

From: CurtisLoew Date: June 25, 2005 at 11:23
I love this disc... I don't think it sounds anything like The Poor, it's closer to power pop, to my ears (and that's meant as a compliment), than most of the stuff here on HH. "Sweet 16" is definitely the "sleaziest" track here, but the ballads ("The Only One", "If I", and especially "Sugar Shack") make it worth way more than it goes for.

From: Paulo_Fernandes Date: June 28, 2005 at 15:39
Curtis - i meant the Poor Boys, not the Poor ehehe, 2 entirely different bands

Melodick glam/rock at tits best, awesome cd,catchin’melodies in simple songs but of an high quality for the genre.Fantastic voice that reminds me to J.Rowe, maybe a little bit”dirtier”than him.I must give 10/10 to these guys….

these guys released a second album, right? anyone heard it?

From: headbanger4life Date: January 10, 2006 at 5:27
This is a great album that seemed to slip under the radar of most collectors. I to thought this was some grunge release when I saw. Boy was I wrong. Everytime I've seen this one, it selling for a couple of bucks. If you come across it, I highly recommend it. I'm trying to track down their other album when they were called "The Unknown".

From: aMetalhead1966 Date: January 11, 2006 at 14:18
Not a bad little release here...When I go lookin for obscure, rare releases,I see this alot. If ya can't find them on C.D. then look for tapes...I personally have found alot on tape unopened and Cheap!! I found this one for a couple of bucks still sealed...They kinda sound like Ac-Faster-Rowe-Dc ...sorta of...7/10.

I was the Bass Player for Blackfish, thanks for all the nice comments. Anyway, we did have an unreleased album that we finally printed last year. we only made 200 copies and sold them at a reunion gig we played in 2004. We played one show, and sold the CD's and some special T-Shirts as a benefit for our drummer who contracted Leukemia in 2004. Incidentally, our guitar player, Mike Mahaffey died 3 months later. It was the first, and last time we had all been together since we broke up in 1993.

Blackfish is a fine group. My favorite song is " The only one. It is not a MUST HAVE, but a nice little baby!!!

Hey. I found this CD in a pawnshop a long time ago and put it in my player... it didn't come out for like, a month. (it had a yellow sticky in it that said "Jerry, Check out cut #7.." that's why I grabbed it.) Good stuff here, kinda poppy, good hooks and real catchy. We covered one of the songs, right after Ozzy's "I Don't Know" we simply launched into "I Don't Care". I heard some influence in Cry of Love's 2nd CD "Diamonds and Debris" listen to Sugarcane.... Chris, very sorry to hear about Mike

Just saw a couple of Sweet Sixteen CD singles on EBay....

Chris thanks for the update sorry to hear about Mike. I think you guys came to Buffalo once to a club called Blind Mellons but I missed it...man I am kicking myself. Any chance the 2nd disc will pop up anywhere again soon? Blackfish has my vote for one of the most underrated bands of all-time.- Joe From Buffalo

El comienzo bien cool(1,2) pero luego la mayoría de temas me gustan mucho mas, buen HardRock. "The Only One" Muy buen Baladón en onda acústica así como "Sugar Shack", "If I" "Hey Julie" "Easy As Saying Goodbye" "Turn Around" de lo mejor. Cool Album. 8.5/10
