I'm going to get angry responses to this, but . . . one word: over-rated.
|
From: Rockforever |
Date: July 24, 2002 at 12:46 |
No Don you're not going to get an angry response from me.Overrated is perhaps the wrong word. Black N Blue were typical (whatever typical means in this case!) of the trashy late-80s glam-metal, Motley Crue-wannabes that clogged up the charts. The difference is that the Crue had talent (and by no means were all of their records consistent),whereas this band's attempt to sound hard and sleazy merely made them sound tired and formulaic.Hair metal was awful; this band were one of the worst.

ummm whoever said hair metal was awful made that statement without ever hearing half of the hair bands out there....Black N Blue is a good band and many of their songs are well written and produced.....whether it's hair bands or country and western etc,,, It all starts to sound the same after awhile and that's why Much Music & Radio stations change the style they will play on their broadcasts every decade.....It's all about what the kids want today and not about any Rock bands with talent which

Rockfever. Well its a matter of opinion. Black`n Blue did sound tired, but that was on their 4 th release. Until then they were one of the best. I think. You call them late 80s Glam-Metal. Well their first release was made in 1984. I agree that Motley Crue were in a special class. True, but Black`n Blue were just behind, and especially this release is a musf for any fan of that style. And even a must for any hard rock fan. Keep rockin``

Hey Don, You have to be kidding! Motley Crue had more talent than Black N' Blue? Vinve Neil waas Vince Neil but Jaime St. James had a hell of a better stronger and better voice than vince Neil on his worst day!!! If you'd ever truly listened to all of their cd's, you would come to the same conclusion! Being a Portland guy I'm biased but let's get seious, Motley Crue was in a special class and ye they put on a show but if you're talking about a tight cohesive unit Black N' Blue beat Motley Crue h

This CD packs enough power and energy to blast a rocket to the moon and back. For an early 80s release, production sounds pretty darn good, and anyone who appreciates the loud guitars, strong hooks, shout-along choruses, and gang backing vocals that defined the 80s hair-metal movement will love this album. Were they Motley Crue wannabes? Hardly. Motley Crue only wished they sounded this good...

This is B&B best album. They attained extensive air play with "Hold on to 18"but the true ROCKING song is "Chains Around Heaven". This is a very good album to have. I would have to agree with some comments that this is probably their best album. Good vocal and good musicians who were probably grossly underrated.

I'll stick to what Don & Rockforever said. This is overrated. But HairMetal was awful?!!, he doesn't belong here!!! Anyway, yes, they sound powerful, and St. James vocals are have more power than Vince Neil, but this band doesn't have that special thing that can make a band big! And their songs, they don't hold up to Motley's .

It's all rebellious anthems about staying young and fighting for rock and roll. You wouldn't have to listen to a song called 'The Strong Will Always Rock' or 'Hold On To 18' to know that. There are a ton of hard riffs throughout, which qualify 'I'm The King' and 'Autoblast' as quality metal contenders. 'Show Me The Night' features the brilliant soloing of Thayer and a tight rhythm section. Highly recommended!!

Still can't believe how many people find this band great. Yes, the songs have this rebellious themes and anthemic BUT!, that's all there is to it. Their playing is below average compared to other 80's band like Racer X or Bang Tango. I think, with their playing, they can be compared with Twisted Sister. But TS is WAY too better in songs than this pathetic band.

A damn good album. I remember waiting for this release back in the day FOREVER. I swear it was pushed back for two years. They should have been huge. Up there with the Motleys, Ratts and Bon Jovi's. Jamie St. James is a perfect fit for this type of rock and roll. He is a great guy. Met him this summer touring with Warrant. Standout tracks of course Hold onto 18, The Srong will rock, Wicked Bitch and the School of Hard Knocks. Easily a 8/10.
|
From: gener8tr |
Date: October 15, 2004 at 17:32 |
Black N' Blue's playing was "below average?" Okay, METALHEAD, you're right... That's why Tommy Thayer is the newest lead guitarist for KISS, because he sucks, right? I'm sure you think Ace was shitty, too, huh? Bang Tango??? There's a band that went real far!
|
From: Scott |

Some of you need to take a metal history lesson. Motley Crue wanna-be? Black'nBlue made their debut on the same 1982 Metal Massacre compilation as bands like Ratt, Cirith Ungol & Metallica. In other words, B'nB were not some "Crue wanna-bes" as they started around the same time as Crue. This is a solid METAL CD with tons of testosterone injected anthems. I am still hoping that the universe re-aligns itself and put B'nB back together with Tommy, and Kiss with Ace!
|
From: Metalhead |
Date: October 21, 2004 at 23:22 |
Yes, I absolutely agree with you, gener8tr, Black N'Blue played incredibly well that they are still huge today. And Tommy Thayer is still kicking Van Halen's & Vai's asses on guitar polls to this day. He still figure prominently on different polls after so many years without an album, unlike Eric Johnson.
|
From: Dean |
Date: November 27, 2004 at 13:43 |
Um Gener8tr, with no disrespect to Kiss or Tommy Thayer, Kiss's strong side was not their musical ability. They wrote strong catchy songs that were extremely marketable. Peter Criss was probably one of the worst drummers to ever make it big and Ace's ability pretty much depended on how screwed up he was every night. Black and Blue were awesome at writing great hard rock, nothing more, nothing less. This album had the perfect attitude for a pissed off teenager(me).

The singer sounds like something from the punk era, terrible voice. Black 'n' Blue have a good sound and the music is good but the vocals are crap, alot of people say there not keen on B'N'B thats because of the singer...if the singer is bad then people are turned of or say there not that keen on them. Get the like's of sebastian bach and they would be awesome, I like the band for the music but its hard to like the singer.

good album with some killer songs and some fillers, the great ones are fantastic, Hold On to 18, Strong, Wicked, Action(cool Sweet cover) and Show. This is mid 80's metal with a touch of glam, mainly the singer's voice, good stuff, just wish half of the album was as great as the other half.

This is a good one, I've got it on tape (never found it on CD). A friend of mine turned me on to B 'n B back in '88. This album is raw but the songwriting is pretty good, setting it head shoulders above first releases by Ratt, Crue, Great White, and others back then. eBay price is much more reasonable than some of their other stuff.

This one is my favorite in the Black N Blue catalog, but as with all their material it is hit and miss. This one just has more hits than misses for me I guess. Their sound is like that of a million other 80's metal bands that were swamping the scene at the time. There is some very strong material here like "Strong Will Rock", "Hold On To 18", "Wicked Bitch", and "Autoblast". Out of the Black N Blue catalog, this is the one I recomend the most.

I was interested in Tommy Thayer's back catalogue so sought this debut album from Black 'N Blue a while ago. It's a very loud, raw disc with no ballads and just rockers like School of Hard Knocks, Wicked Bitch, I'm The King and a brilliant cover of Action. The best song is indubitably Hold On To 18 though. Not as melodic as Without Love but this dics packs more of a punch.
