I thought Frontiers/Now & Then had dropped the ball when releasing the 3 American Tears albums. I bought them and was completely non-plussed. Sure they're interesting reference points historically with regards the evolution of Touch and Mark Mangold, but the music is odd and of little interest to your average Pomp/Aor listener. At least that's what I thought - but these days I really enjoy the albums. I think it's a case of hidden depths to the music here. Maybe not your general fodder as the music can veer from pompish, proggish touches, to mid 70's funky, jazzy stuff (Leroy Diminished on this for example) to just straight ahead jazzy bluesy rock. It really is quite a varied bag but one I've come to enjoy. I'd say approach with caution. |
