Great cd, but would have been better if they could have found Mark Slaughter in time to record it.

I agree with T-BONE. Mark Slaughter would have been Great on this cd. Musically, I like this cd better than All Systems Go, but I don't like the vocalist. The story was that Mark's girlfriend sent in a demo tape of him to the band, but forgot to put his name on it. Vinnie got a Session vocalist for the recording while he looked for The vocalist on the demo. Luckily, Mark re-sent the demo in and was hired for the job, but the cd was already recorded and released. It's still a very good cd! Buy It

Just because Slaughter wasn't the singer on this one doesn't mean the he was a slouch. Had he chosen to embrace the 'rock star' persona, he could have gone far.

Vinnie Vincent gives us everything but a surprise with this release . If you've listened to the KISS' 'Lick it Up' before, then you realise how amazing guitar is Vinnie! He wrote the songs as well. Probably the best 80s guitar-hero coming from America!

From simply a guitar standpoint this album is just perfect. Just one of the best 'extreme' guitar albums of all time. The lyrics are almost embarrasing to hear now but that's one small complaint. How can a guy with this much talent just drift into obscurity?? Too bad.

Thank god for the remaster. before that I was seriously gonna kill someone to get hold of this on cd, having it on tape and vinyl several times already. It is simply awesome, and makes mincemeat of your brain on maximum volume. In fact I think my hearing deteriorated after owning this album, but it was worth it. Get it now, and let the music melt your ear drums. Invasion will blow you away!

Even in the lack of Slaughter's voice it's absolutely a GREAT ALBUM. 'Boys Are Gonna Rock' and 'Invasion' are really super. Vinnie's guitar? No need to mention, ya know...He's a special musician.

'Boyz Are Gonna Rock' is the most beautifully stupid metal video ever! Over the top corny, cliche, unexplainable rock history that one. Close runner ups are Crimson Glory's 'Lonely' (I would hide my face too), Y&T's 'Mean Streak' (Just plain cheesy) and Warrant's 'Heaven' (Don't you feel sorry for Jani having to gaze lovingly into the camera?) Raven's 'On and On' gets points for the foam chest guards.

Essential hard rock release here, people. Every song kicks ass with the exception of Baby-O which just sounds corny to me (IMO). Vinnie totally shreds on here...what a guitarist! Also, I happen to like Fleischman's vocals on this release. It seems that Vinnie's guitar work on the 2nd. album with Mark Slaughter was a bit more subdued...anyway, my Fav. tracks on here are 1,3,4,5,and 7...if you don't have it or haven't heard this CD, it is something I'd definitely recommend!!...Rock on!...

Just because Mr. Cusano plays really fast doesn't make him a great guitarist. The songs on this thing are like a series of chords waiting for a solo to come around. He may have written most of the Lick It Up album, but come on guys! That CD only sold because KISS took off the make-up for the album cover. After 'Lick It Up', the rest of the CD is mediocre at best. Invasion did poorly at the retail shops while Slaughter went platinum. Guess which of the two CD's Vinnie DIDN'T play on?

What I like about Vinnies guitar playing it`s that his guitar tones are always on the very edge of total distortion. It is a clever skill to control it and he does it fine. So much more interesting than the boring Blackmore clone, Malmsteen.
|
From: Great Dane |
Date: May 17, 2003 at 15:49 |
Ron E.......Even comparing the two is totally wrong. The style is way different, and so is their skills. Bringing the tones on the edge of distortion is really not that hard. Distortion is something, many bands / players use in the beginning. Vincent is a fairly good player. But thats it. Malmsteen, is technically far better than Blackmore, But that doesnt make him any fun listening to. If I were to choose Vincent or Malmsteen, it would at any point be Malmsteen. Distortion sounds like shit. :-(

Excellent hard rock disc. I got this one early in the summer of '86 and listened to it continuously 'til school came back in. 'Boyz Are Gonna Rock' is one of the most intense metal anthems....EVER! Robert Fleischman sang his ass off on this cd, and I much prefer this disc to the more comercially successful 'All Systems Go'.

A perfect example of what all 80's heavy metal should have sounded like. This CD is really, really heavy stuff. Barely an ounce of commercialism on it. If the rest of the heavy metal world would have been this heavy and extreme, grunge would have never won the early 90's rock war. Bottom line is; grunge shouldn't have won anyway. Grunge wasn't even close to being as hard and heavy as heavy metal.

Vinnie Vincent is one of the most talented shredders to walk the face of the earth--such a shame that his name is seldom mentioned along side-Van Halen,Rhoads,Lynch,Vai and Malmsteen, because he is definitely worthy. This killer piece of shred is testimony to that fact .

Why is no one acknowledging the commonly known fact that Vinnie slowed down the tracks, played his solos, then put the tracks up to speed? Ever wonder why the solos on this record sound strange, where every note sounds picked? IT'S BECAUSE THE SOLOS WERE RECORDED AT HALF SPEED! Vinnie is a hack, always was. I do like this CD though. I have a Japanese version released by BURRN! Legendary Masters series. This worth anything? Sounds like Slaughter to me....
|
From: Dean |
Date: January 18, 2004 at 16:37 |
Is that really true about Vinnie's solos-I've heard other guitarists get that same sound using effects so that doesn't really clinch it for me. Is there any proof to it besides being 'commonly known'? It was also 'commonly known' that Gene Simmons had a cow tongue sewn to his.

I would like to get my hands on that japanese verion of the cd-though. Any other tracks or dif. sound quality?
|
From: Bizkit82 |
Date: January 18, 2004 at 17:37 |
I don't think there's any difference on the Jap version. The cover is all in Japanese as well as the info inside. That's it. As far as the slowing down of the tapes and recording the solos, well, I wasn't there(I was only 6 in '86, but my uncle is a sound engineer and a sometime producer who worked with some big artists in the past. He said that back in the day it was a big controversy in all the guitar mags and everyone in the business knew what Vinnie had done. The proof was in the live show.

Anyone got any live shows?
|
From: Dean |
Date: January 18, 2004 at 18:13 |
And now looking back- i have tons of guitar mags from that time period- from 85 to 95- I've never read much mention of it- not even in some of the articles from Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum where all they do is rip on Vinnie. Some of Joe Strum's solos sound a lot like that and i have seen him play everything pretty much note for note so I know it can be done. It'd just be kind of cool to know if it was or not. But even guitarists like Yngwie completely improvise solos live sometimes.

From: Bizkit82 |

The Vinnie Vincent controversy was in Hit Parader, Circus, and Guitar. People were talking. The mid 80's was the 'see who can play faster than Malmsteen' years. Vinnie wanted to be the fastest gun in the West. By slowing down the tracks during solos he succeeded. I have a live bootleg off Limewire from VVI in '87. The solos are not the same. The same melodies yes, but not the speed. You can totally tell. Read Gene Simmons 'Kiss & Makeup' for the dirt on Vinnie. I like this CD, but it's not real.

Complete Bullsh.t !---Vinnie recorded all his stuff legit.Countless f..king musicians back in the day would rip Vinnie for whatever reason--jealousy,envy maybe. The truth is this guy was the sh.t and could outplay most guitarists in genre and beyond.Contrary to what Paul,Gene,Mark Slaughter(overrated singer),Dana Strum(dork) and many others have said in the past !
|
From: Bizkit82 |
Date: January 19, 2004 at 16:05 |
You're way off. Half speed. Listen to the tone. Every note picked on huge scale runs at a million miles an hour? Don't think so. Go back into your archives and read what was going on in the mid 80's. 'Half tracking' was done all the time. Btw, Vinnie was never 'the sh*t,' maybe just 'sh*t,' but never 'THE sh*t.' Like I said, I have a live bootleg of Vinnie Vincent. It's not there buddy. The guy was all smoke and mirrors. All show and no go.
|
From: Scandinavia |
Date: January 19, 2004 at 18:29 |
I'll back that up times 10...Vinnie is a lousy player. Sloppy all the way! No feel, no melody, no nothing....Oh, and as a shredder he actually sucks even more. A wannabe is all he ever was and all he ever will be. 'Metal T' - you obviously don't know what you're talkin' about!
|
From: Metal T |
Date: January 19, 2004 at 21:55 |
You're both full of it ! Funny thing ive got a live boot' as well and Vinnie' is tearing it up big time (like on the record) playing as fast as hell and sounding like the virtuoso shredder that he is. Sure 'Half Tracking' was done back in the day, doesn't mean Vinnie was doing it.'Scandinavia','Bizkit82' why such hostility against an incredible talent like Vinnie ?
|
From: Bizkit82 |
Date: January 19, 2004 at 22:35 |
Cause he isn't much of an artist and never was. His reputation in the industry was less than stellar, and is now nothing but negative myth. These days, I believe he is sitting around in a cheap condo somewhere in Boca Raton wondering if today is the day he'll have a good solid bowel movement, remembering the days when he slowed down the tapes and really knocked 'em dead.
|
From: Reno |
Date: January 20, 2004 at 2:05 |
I hate to break it, but Bizkit is right. I remember reading that many times over. I saw VVI live in the late 80's and Vinnie couldn't do anything remotely like he did on the cd. As far as Vinnie 'sounding' like he was 'tearing it up big time', add a little delay with the right timing and an echo and he could hit one note and make it sound like 2-4 anyway. It would also cover up alot of mistakes. Vinnie was OK when he would play at the speed he was capable of, but him trying to shred was a joke.
|
From: Dean |
Date: January 20, 2004 at 12:59 |
Ok besides the shit i helped stir up-(sorry) one question about the boots. Can Mark Slaughter actually sing 'Boyz are gonna Rock' halfway decent or is it as bad as I've heard people say. I'm not a Slaughter(the band) fan at all but i like his stuff on the second Invasion album. It's funny because livewise his singing is where I've heard the most negative comments about, not Vinnie's playing.
|
From: Don M. |
Date: February 17, 2004 at 4:02 |
Re: Vinnie and the half tracking, sure Vinnie used a lot of delay etc, but live he had no problem recreating the solos as recorded. I saw him numerous times and up close. Vinnie also released a REH instructional video where on camera he play almost all the solos flawlessly before showing how he pulled it off. More than anything this was a guy who used a lot of tap technique as well as his form of Travis picking (using his other right hand fingers as well as his pick at the same time) to pull of

Jimbo, is Lick It Up the only track you heard off that CD? Must be, because your comment is ridiculous! If anything, Lick It Up is the worst song on the CD. Exciter, Not For The Innocent, Young And Wasted and All Hell's Breakin' Loose are all awesome Kiss compositions. Lick It Up sold well because the band took off the makeup AND because they put out a kick butt rock n roll record thank in part to Vinnie Vincent.

Also, who cares how Vinnie recorded the solos for this CD. The fact is, it's a good CD. Anyone who thinks Vinnie is the only one to use studio tricks to record an album is more than ignorant. You do what you have to do in the studio to make your record sound good. The proof is in your live performance, which I will testify that Vinnie was no slacker! This CD rules and so does Vinnie.

It never crossed my mind that the guitar solos where 'speeded' up.....but it is possible. However Vinnies self-titled debt is still one of my all time favioutes, I don't really like his guitar style but what makes this album special are the songs, as song writer Vinnie was almost peerless at writing up-tempo raunchy heavy metal athems, I don't think it matters weather the guitar solos are speeded up, you either like this album or not (and I LIKE it).

Gosh, where do i start ? Robert was not sucessful after exiting this band simply because good songs make OK singers sound stellar. Still i wish he had caught on somewhere else with another great songwriter/ Mark on the other hand IMO had the chops in 88' and then had a great set of songs to sing along to on the first slaughter album. But again, i can now see how Mark also is the benefactor of great songs. Vinnie simply can't top this album, although i want vinnie to know that i dare him to try.

Someone above said 'not an ounce of commercialism.' WHAT? You need a dictionary, because this album drips with commercialism! How is 'do you wanna make love' or 'shoot u full of love' NOT commercial??? Not that its a bad thing. Don't know about the slowed-recording bit, but the shredding was decent, though not top-of-the-line. Lyrics and vocals were cookie-cutter at best. Still listenable and somewhat noteworthy. Why ain't Vinnie still around? Might have something to do with him being a prick...

I have a bootleg album, that's made of Kiss' leftovers from the Lick It Up-period. Half of this record's songs are on that bootleg. Or at least parts of them. Terrible production. Guitars mixed far too high. During the solo, it would be nice to hear at least drums. And I don't like singer's voice either. But catchy songs that's why 7/10

This is an unbelievable album - every song is flawless as Vinnie combines the fastest guitar playing, killer riffs, solos and a fantastic singer. Robert Fleischman is a vastly superior singer, leaving Mark Slaughter easily in the dust. Vinnie's style of writing the songs around the solos works best for him and it shows when you compare this to the weaker All Systems Go album. I can't praise this one enough - heavy, fast, shredding at it's best by the best! 11/10.

Vinnie is a good guitar player that needs to show some Control. Yeah he's got the speed down, but he needs to be a little more Melodic. For all those people saying VVI suck - what the heck are you thinking? Vinnie absolutely shreds on the axe and Robert Fleischman on vox puts in an effort which basically shames a lot of vocalists from more mainstream metal bands of the time. Boyz R Gonna Rock is a classic in the genre, Vinnie's solos in 'Animal' are jaw droppingly wicked, and I can never resist listening to the glam goodness of tracks like 'Shoot U full of Love', and 'Do You Wanna Make Love'. Bluntly put, this album kicks ass!

Awesome cd, well vinyl. Back On The Streets is one of the best on the albu, aloing with Animal and the opener and the title track. Fuckin great guitar playing, up there with Yngwie, Van Halen, George Lynch, Impelliteri, Crosby & De Martini and Paul Gilbert.

An average hard rock album IMO, the main reason being Robert as he is without a single hesitation, the absolute wirst singer in hard rock history, i'll take Jim Gilette over him anyday, unfortunately bad vocals make a CD difficult for me to listen to, some songs like Animal sound awesome at first but I cringe wheneever the awful vocals kick in.I vastly prefer Mark Slaughter

Great album. Robert Fleischman is an excellent vocalist and it's a pity he didn't stick around for the next album. Every song here is well written with some crazy solos thrown in for good measure. Wanna Be Your Victim and No Substitute are the best songs here.

JIMBO "Just because Mr. Cusano plays really fast doesn't make him a great guitarist. The songs on this thing are like a series of chords waiting for a solo to come around" I could not agree more.

I can't believe anyone hasn't mentioned the AOR perfection that is "No Substitute". What a song!

MUCH better than the 2nd CD. Although it is debatable as to who is the better singer - Mark or Fleischman. What isn't is the absolute shredding on this disc. Not the best guitarist by any means, but that doesn't take away from the fact that these are some really infectious tunes...10/10

Great debut undoubtebly!!!..solid songs sang with a wild Robert Fleischman!!!(formerly of Journey,he was the lead vocalist before Steve Perry got the job)..i think Vinnie was not really appreciated as a musician when in Kiss(caught him live with them on the "Lick It Up" world Tour in Lisbon,Portugal..support act was Helix) and i noticed that his stage presence was kinda limited..anyway songs such as "Boyz Are Gonna Rock"(a blast!),"Shoot U Full Of Love","No Substitute"(with a touch of AOR feel),"Twisted"(another blast!),"Back On The Streets"(brilliant),"Baby-O"(catchy)& "Invasion"(great!) are really worth or at least is my impression...a matter of tastes but i've found this quite a complete record.94/100

Would have been MUCH better without the incessant guitar wankery.

Vinnie is excellent songwriter and very good guitar player, but he must control his guitar playing! He kills his good songs with too much shredding! Totally unnecessary! I would especially single out the songs from Side B "Do You Wanna Make Love", "I Wanna Be Your Victim", "Baby-O", "Invasion" and the brilliant "Back On The Streets" is a true treasure. The album would be much better without guitar shredding.

The second most out-fucking-rageous glam-metal album of the '80's (I just gave you the hands-down winner if you're paying attention). Everything about this disc is just so overblown, from the impossibly booming drums (even by '80's standards--they had to work extremely hard to get that sound, too), to the maniacal shrieking of an ex-Journey singer (who knew he had it in him?) to the former Kiss Pharaoh's utterly insane guitar-playing. The songs themselves epitomize excess in every way too, largely dispensing with innuendo and glorying in their complete brainlessness. It's the kind of music that can only be equated with angry neighbors screaming through the walls and the police banging on the door--not that you can hear them over this racket. Sure, Vinnie's a shredder, but at the end of "Animal," he makes shredding sound as stupid as humanly possible.

Nearly everything DR said; I feel too. However, I loved this freaking disc in '85 and my buddies and I would leave the school parking lot ripping "Boyz Are Gonna Rock" and "Shoot You Full of Love" nearly everyday. I know it's a 30 year debate but Mark Slaughter did a recent interview and confirmed that Vinnie did NOT slow anything down in the recording process. He was a dick and they chopped takes but nothing was ever slowed. I still listen to this once every couple of years.

excellent debut for VINNIE VINCENT s INVASION back in 86 ,just as the hard rock genre was ready to explode and rule the planet!i agree that this one has extreme excess ,but i think that this is exactly its strong point ,along with great riffs, solos, songs and looks!"no substitute","back on the streets","boyz are gonna rock",'animal" and "i wanna be you victim" are fantastic songs and overall a classic of the mid 80 s hard rock scene

Underappreciated gem from the bloke who helped ressurrect Kiss from their doldrums. This release should be enjoyed by anyone who loves the GLAM in their hard rock. Boyz Are Gonna Rock is the perfect opener, full of memorable hooks and guitar pyrotechnics. But the best song is the mini-epic Invasion to close out the disc. Simply needs to be heard to be believed. 90/100.
