Like your first high, these guys never recaptured what was the first time ever again. This one is a classic. You don't much better than this, the musicianship & songwriting is right on target. They truly made the cover of Piece of My Heart their own. Cutt your heart out is a monster track! 9.5 on the SWINE SCALE!

From: saveyourown Date: July 26, 2001 at 0:01
I can agree with the comment about the first high, however I do believe the band has what it takes to get back to what this album was all about. Not just the heart break gig, but what ever comes from the heart. Look for them in the future, they are coming back.

From: Harvey Date: October 24, 2001 at 14:14
Never buy this album!! Total cod metal (Spinal Tap eat your heart out) which is done without a hint of irony. The worst album I've ever bought.Just look at the song titles..."Black Widow", "The Kids will rock". Buy a Van Halen album instead, much more intelligent music.

From: Harvey Date: October 24, 2001 at 14:16
I'm not kidding...it's really bad. Quite funny in places though.

From: SHAG Date: October 29, 2001 at 8:14
I don't know what the previous guy has been drinking, but this album rocks!!! He thinks Rough Cutt sucks and calls it COD metal, but loves BUBBLEGUM metal like Danger Danger!! Well look at Danger Danger's song titles-Naughty Naughty??-Bang Bang??-Turn it on??-Live it up?-Come on man!! You call that intelligent music?? What's the difference? Obviously he's forgotten where he is!! This album isn't the greatest of all, but should'nt be put behind a bubblegum, candyass band like Danger Danger!!!!

From: Harvey Date: November 16, 2001 at 7:28
The (subtle) difference is Danger Danger's songwriting was executed in an ironic fashion. Rough Cutt were serious. Look...call me what you want but this album is really appalling!!!

From: Tinger Date: November 30, 2001 at 12:18
I don't know why you're going out of your way to slag Rough Cutt;if you don't like this album, or Shortino fine....no biggie to me.But many, many others (me included) consider this one of the finest debuts of the 80's Hard Rock/Metal era.

From: WidoMakr Date: January 18, 2002 at 19:25
No ladies...cant we all get along??? No? good...anyway... SIXXSWINE...u were right on with your pic for best tune...excellent tune....and while we are talking about Danger danger...yeah the songwriting is cheesy but who gives a rats ass...I have never understood people...what the hell do u listen to music for..the sound..screw what they say...like what they say u r gonna go out and live...yeah right...give me an ass kickin tune with chessy lyrics anyday...quote the WidoMakr....never more

From: gill Date: January 23, 2002 at 15:02
This has to be one of the top 20 heavy metal debut albums in the 80's. Yes I bought Van halen albums, but when I heard Rough Cutt for the first time, I believe I put away my Van Halen albums for 8 months. This album Rocks!!

From: David Date: August 10, 2002 at 23:00

OMG!!! People still talking about Rough Cutt after all these years=). I first saw RC in San Diego for the '84/'85 New Years show(never heard of them) and was blown away. Saw them open for Dio later that year. RC offered so much more musically than most of the hair bands from the 80s. They had the hooks & riffs & the vocals of Shortino that set them apart. No cheezy power ballads for RC, these guys were just a damn good rock band. The songs on this album still sound fresh today. Rough Cutt ROCKS!

Just picked up a cd called Paul Shortino Featuring Jeff Northrup Back On Track. Its really good, I had never even heard of it, till I saw it in the store. Cool players are on it too. Northrup, Shortino, Bobby Kimball, Appice, Kottak, Glenn Hicks, Jeff Pilson and Matt Bissonette + more that I have never heard of. Does anyone know if this is the only release this line up made.???

As someone above pointed out, "Dreamin' Again" is a masterpiece(and my second favorite Cutt song),and the songs "Piece of My Heart","Black Widow", and "Kids Will Rock" are all stand-outs as well. Overall, I liked their second disc "Wants You" a little better, but this is an excellent debut effort...no doubt. If you like Shortino's work with Rough Cutt(or just the Cutt nowadays),check out Quiet Riot's self-titled disc;Paul sounds BRILLIANT there as well!

From: sparkyass Date: January 25, 2004 at 2:58
this is a truly great metal album.i highly recomend it.never heard the second one but will have to track it down.

From: Dave Date: March 16, 2004 at 16:23
This is without a doubt one of the greatest and most underated rock records of all time!!

From: Mike h Date: June 3, 2004 at 21:20
Great self-titled debut cd. sounds great. good songs include TAKE HER, NEVER GONNA DIE, CUTT YOUR HEART OUT, KIDS WILL ROCK, and PIECE OF MY HEART-THE BEST SONG ON THE CD, PERIOD.

From: Twitch Date: July 19, 2004 at 3:57
Good lord, this album is totally underrated. Looking at the cover you could lump it in with other mediocre 80s acts, but it sounds so much better than their contemporaries! I was taken in right away from the chorus riff of Take Her, and that ending! Brilliant, they should've been on top.

From: Marla (MJ) Date: September 7, 2004 at 0:26
"Dreamin' Again"....one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard.... I love it. "Cutts Your Heart Out"....ROCKS!!! I really love the song "Black Widow" too!!

From: ptw Date: October 16, 2004 at 20:34
If you ever saw their video for Piece my heart...it's pretty bad. They all looked stoned, particulary the singer...his pouty looks look really silly. He looks wasted and has trouble with keeping his eyes focused. I get a feeling the video was done very quickly.

From: Harvey Date: November 14, 2004 at 5:21
Look, I hate to bang on about this album, but just how much more classy was Shortino on the Quiet Riot album that on this pile of poo!!

From: Sergio Date: November 19, 2004 at 23:50
Este está en mi lista de los mejores de los 80, con excelentes guitarras y voz, y perfectas composiciones.

From: charvel man Date: November 20, 2004 at 21:03
Have not heard this record yet and the strange thing is I don't recall this band ever coming out in the 80's. Though I know they did. I write this because I downloaded some of their stuff off of limewire.com. For any one that has not been on it yet, it is a very good site to find all your favorite 80's hard rock. XYZ, rough cutt, ect. CHECK IT OUT LIMEWIRE.COM

From: christo Date: November 27, 2004 at 8:13
This is kick ass melodic hard rock/metal, paul shortino is a great vocalist and the guitar work by amir and chris cooks, dreamin again is my personal fave but the other songs are great too, a must buy.

From: Betsy Browning Date: February 5, 2005 at 19:56
Rough Cutt were excellent! I still have some of the original flyers I got on the strip. This band should have been much bigger, indeed. HEY, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT DAVE ALFORD IS DOING??? We were the best of friends during the 1980's but I lost him after Hollywood fell apart. David if you are reading this: betsylou802@yahoo.ocm

From: onemorecast Date: March 5, 2005 at 0:48
I liked shortino on the quiet riot album. The piece of my heart cover was just terrible. Janis was rolling over in her grave when they did it.

From: roucketas Date: March 25, 2005 at 14:46
a little bit heavier, than your average mainstream (pop)metal album of the '80's.Shortino has one of the best voices in Heavy Metal, definitely!the guitar duet is one of the best ever, too!and finally, the cherry on the cake..."Dreamin' Again"!serious contender for "song of the decade"!an anthem that even Dokken would envy it!!

From: lemas156 Date: October 6, 2005 at 18:13
One of the best metal albums of all time, if not THE best metal album of all time. The production is impeccable....man, Dreamin' Again still gives me chills! It is BY FAR the best hard rock ballad ever put down on tape! Paul Shortino is the most unerrated vocalist I've ever heard. Amir and Chris are amazing gtr players, Matt is rock solid and David Alford-I can't say enough good things about his drumming! Back to this cd...They were one of the best metal bands to have ever existed...no joke!

From: lemas156 Date: October 6, 2005 at 18:17
As much as I love this band, I do have to agree with the posts about the 'Piece Of My Heart' video. It has to be one of the lamest videos I've seen. They do look stoned and the clothes and make-up are awful! The lip syncing could very well go down in history as some of the worst. Wendy Dio (manager) and the label should have been slapped for pushing to have POMH as the second single. If they had released Dreamin' Again or Take Her, the Rough Cutt story might have ended a little differently.

From: z4roxx Date: October 9, 2005 at 12:24
Rough Cutt is one of the biggest delusion in this style, not awesome or masterpiece, just very average and little boring class hard rock IMO.

From: DANTE Date: June 7, 2006 at 5:50
PARA MÍ, EL MEJOR DISCO DE HARD-AOR QUE SE HA HECHO EN LA HISTORIA. TODAS LAS CANCIONES SON DE 10. PAUL SHORTINO ESTÁ IMPRESIONANTE. DREAMING AGAIN Y YOU KEEP BREAKING MY HEART SON IRREPETIBLES, SON OBRAS DE ARTE, MASTERPIECE COMO DICEN LOS COLEGAS ENGLISH. RECUERDO HABERLO ADQUIRIDO EL VINILO POR CASUALIDAD Y YA NO PODER DEJARLO JAMÁS. ES DE LOS DISCOS QUE ESCUCHARÍA A DIARIO. GEEEEEEEEEENIAL.

Paul Shortino is a great singer, but this band was 3rd rate metal. However, "Never Gonna Die", "Kids Will Rock" and "Take Her" are fine. One of the best metal albums of all time? LOL C'mon!!

From: z4roxx Date: January 19, 2007 at 13:42
Hard rock is a vast jungle full of great band and I can put Rough Cutt among them after a more accurate listenings. As Alcatrazz, some bands need more chances and several listenings, that’s not a defect but I think it’s a good thing because maybe they have somethin’more other bands.

From: lemas156 Date: May 24, 2007 at 19:05
themartin - all a matter of taste. I personally feel that this a fantastic piece of hard rock history. Ironically, 2 of the 3 tracks you listed ("Never Gonna Die", "Kids Will Rock" ) are the weaker songs (if there were any) on this album. Again, all a matter of taste....

Pues para mí es solo un buen album de HardRock. "Dreamin' Again" es de lejos mi favorita seguida de "Never Gonna Die". Los solos no muy inspirados la verdad y la voz de Shortino nunca me gustó del todo. 8/10

From: lalorock Date: October 15, 2007 at 22:46
Este es un gran album, casi un clásico a mi parecer,HARD ROCK con mayúsculas, guitarras desgarradas llenos de riffs simples pero directos y efectivos,te harán mover la cabeza a su ritmo,la voz de Paul Shortino es única, llena de fuerza y mantiene cada tema en atención del oyente,Take Her,Piece of my heart,Never gonna die excelentes piezas de clásico hard rock,Dreaming Again power ballad con esa voz del tío que lo eleva al máximo,She´s too hot otro temazo, escúchalo más veces y verás lo que digo..

From: RockMan10 Date: May 29, 2008 at 21:25
This, to me, is THE reason I love melodic rock/metal. After the first 5 seconds of "Take Her", I said "WTF is this crap?" and then Mr. Shortino just blew me away on the entire disc. To this day, "Dreamin Again" and Ratt's "Wanted Man" are my two favorite "crankin'" tunes. (Plenty of others but you get where I'm going). This was just head and shoulders above all the trite crap in '85 and just a notch below the more radio friendly discs that everyone has and knows. FANTASTIC GEM. 95/100

From: rockhardrock Date: April 16, 2009 at 17:27
Paul sang on one album in the band quiet riot (when he replaced Kevin)in 1988 and this album was a disaster. When i listened this one, it was a million times better. This album is a classic in melodic heavy metal genre. I don't know how their follow up sounds, but i'm sure it can't be better than this one. My favs: Never Gonna Die, Cutt Your Heart Out, Black Widow, Kids Will Rock and She's Too Hott

From: HARD/AOR Date: April 18, 2009 at 12:32
Very good Hard & Heavy album, excelent debut.

From: JamesEagle Date: October 22, 2009 at 9:33
Brilliant. Shortino's voice rocks and suits these songs so well. Lots of great tunes, 'Dreamin' Again' and 'Black Widow' being the standouts for me. One of my all time heavy rock favourites, this album is consistently good and much better than the follow up.

From: edwithmj Date: August 30, 2011 at 17:42
Shortino in his element I think. His voice really shines and the music fits perfectly. The disc starts off with the great Take Her to the nice cover of Piece of My Heart to Dreamin' Again to Kids Will Rock. Classic 80s hard rock.

From: hair metal again Date: October 1, 2013 at 5:32
great debut back in 85 by ROUGH CUTT that captures exactly what was happening in the LA scene !this was the era that commercial hard rock was starting its explosion and this release is one of the first among with others !Paul Shortino is a great voice &frontman till nowadays and i ve been lucky enough catching live the guy when he fronted GREAT WHITE once!Tom Allom does an excellent job in production and the bands sound is solid!highlights are "never gonna die" and "dreaming again".essential in a hard rock collection
