A good cd of AOR,but I don't believe that it is of the best. The disk contains good topics but others are merely passable, for my a disk too much valued. It is incredible to locate to this cd above some of Survivor that if they are the essence of the AOR.

Mi favorita: I Belong to the Night.

This is a fantastic slice of AOR by certainly the best (LIVE) British Aor band. I think Strangeways just (but only just) pip FM to being the finest Brit Aor band ever. This band were incredible live and this album is probably the best FM album. Froen heart, face to face, love lies dying, and i belong to the night are all killers. Every fan of Journey and Foreigner style Aor should have this album. Almost a perfect 10.

To Paul Schofield. Steve Overland has sung a song on the new AOR CD, One on Yeah by Radioactive, sung on the Shadowman project with Steve Morris and Harry James and Chris Childs from Thunder (recorded at Mastertone Studios not far from me in Runcorn) and is working on a new FM CD but they are now called The Ladder. He also plays in a covers band with Pete called the Offenders. Check out www.steveoverland.com for a full list of what he's been up to and the albums he's sung on. Hope this helps.

Keyboards to the fore here by Didge Digital on most songs. Merv Goldsworthy's bass is fluid, and pulsing, and enables the guitars and vocals to shine above it all. And Steve Overland's vocals deliver big time. Some of the songs here are so hook laden and memorable even to this day. 'That Girl', 'Hot Wired', 'Heart Of The Matter' and 'Face To Face' are superb examples. Their classic moment without doubt would have to be the ballad 'Frozen Heart'.

The reason I am into AOR.If there is a better debut album by a British band anywhere,I have yet to hear it.Frozen Heart sums up the 80s in just over 5 minutes, and makes me want to see this band reform and blow away any kind of competition.Do you think I like this band and album?AOR FREAKY help me out here. 10/10

From: TIM (2) |

From: Wotty |

Hey Tim[2],Out of the Silence is a class debut, including Abandon,Return The Heart and King of Spades but better than Indiscreet,I dont think so.And this is not slagging Dare off,who are a class act anyway.[I preferred BLOOD FROM STONE]
|
From: TIM (2) |
Date: August 12, 2004 at 14:04 |
Well my version of this has loads of extra tracks (live and different versions) all of which I tend to skip through, so that probably doesn't help with the overall rating. And maybe because of that, I actually rate 'Tough It Out' pretty much on a par with this. I liked Dare's 'Blood From Stone', but only because between buying it, playing it a couple of times, and then selling it on eBay, it's price had increased from £12 to £45! 'Out of the Silence' ranks in my top 10 of all-time....
|
From: AOR freaky |
Date: August 12, 2004 at 15:42 |
Hey guys, you all name great British AOR debutalbums here. And Wotty, this is a bloody great record. Other fine debut AOR albums from a Britisch act in my book are Strangeways and Walk The Wire !
|
From: Geoff |
Date: August 12, 2004 at 20:29 |
For my money, the best British debut of all time (And best British rock album of all time?) is Blue Blud 'The big noise'. As for FM, I much prefer 'Tough it out' and also I prefer Dare's 'Out of the silence' to the also very excellent debut. That's a close one, but for me FM's second is miles better than the debut. Nice enough debut, but way too many keyboards and not enough balls. Still, cool songs but Blue Blud's debut is a deadset gem!!! Definately my fave of all British.
|
From: Geoff |
Date: August 13, 2004 at 1:52 |
Sorry, just re-read my silly post - what I meant to say is that I prefer Dare's 'Blood from stone' to the debut, though both are excellent CDs.
|
From: TIM (2) |
Date: August 13, 2004 at 4:04 |
Hey Freddy, presume you mean Strangeways' first with Terry Brock: 'Native Sons', which was actually their 2nd album? I'd still personally pick 'Walk In the Fire' over it... Walk the Wire were excellent, as were Virginia Wolf and especially the Heartland S/T, but I tend to agree with Geoff about Blue Blud. Despite the horrific production there are killer tracks on it and it ranks very highly. As does the Atlantic album. For me, they're still not quite there with 'Out of the Silence' though...
|
From: Wotty |
Date: August 13, 2004 at 5:11 |
I stirred it up a bit didnt I.To Tim[2],Out of the Silence is quality, but not as accessible as Indiscreet, meaning there is nothing like Face to Face or The other side of Midnight on O.O.T.S.And GEOFF,The Big Noise,I can only remember RUNNING BACK, though it was a great track. And werent BLUE BLUD previously TRESPASS.I thank you.
|
From: TIM (2) |
Date: August 13, 2004 at 7:31 |
Fair enough Wotty. I do honestly believe that as much as we can argue about some of the British gems, I do think the Scandinavians do this stuff (AOR) just that bit better and more consistently. Sound-wise I would compare 'Indiscreet' to Skagarack's 'Hungry For a Game' as they both have that big commercial keyboard-driven sound, but the Danes just have that extra something, not sure what it is...
|
From: Wotty |
Date: August 13, 2004 at 7:43 |
Hey Tim[2],you give a good debate on AOR,however I think British AOR bands in the 80s had the edge on the Scandanavians, though it is probably not the case now.Thoughts please....

From: aorjocke |

For me this is the best AOR album ever, I can still remember when I first heard it back in 86...It has everything, superb lead and harmony vocals, perfect keys by Didge, every track is pure AOR heaven!3500 records later it's still my favourite!! If we are talking debut albums...how about the album by Outside Edge - Running Hot...it's just a great AOR album,up there with the best.
|
From: Wotty |
Date: August 13, 2004 at 12:45 |
To aorjocke,at last someone says what they mean about INDISCREET.They usually say best debut, but hang on it might be this or it might be that. But to this mans ears INDISCREET is still the best British AOR debut.I cant stress the point enough, even though it has been 18 years since release.

From: Geoff |

'I think British AOR bands in the 80s had the edge on the Scandanavians, though it is probably not the case now.' Hey Wotty, sorry buddy cannot begin to agree with you on this one. There were a few great British bands, but one word for me says where the better tunes came from and that word is the mighty Treat.
|
From: AOR freaky |
Date: August 15, 2004 at 5:59 |
I agree with Wotty ! The British AOR acts are far better than the scandinavian ones (Treat included, who are average at best). But the real masters of AOR are/were the US and Canada ! By the way : look out for the second PULSE release ! Best British record from the year it will be ! A TRUE GEM !!!

The debut and a classic AOR record! 'Frozen Heart' was their biggest hit ever and the world here got to know Steve 'One of the greatest singers ever' Overland. I first didn't know if this or 'Tough it out' was the best record but I think 'Tough it out' is slightly better.. more punch to it! BUT if you don't have this one like first class AOR, you'll miss out! A must have! 9/10

Nothing more to add - One of the best ever in the genre. AOR perfection from beginning to end. This is getting another re-issue in December from Bad Reputation to go along with the excellent 'Tough It Out' re-issue from a month or two back. It will also featuring 7 bonus cuts, so if your thinking about picking up the 2 disc BGO version of these released last month DON'T, get these two seperate re-issues instead. A whole lot better.

Just to update on the 8 bonus tracks if anyone is interested. They are: Captured, Alibi, Hold On To The Night, American Girls (Live), Face To Face (Live), Other Side Of Midnight (Live), Say It Like It Is (Live), Dangerous (Live). Both this & TIO have had a terrific job done on the remastering & sound fresh as a daisy, bonus tracks are excellent on both aswell. As I said above, if you haven't got them, avoid the BGO versions & get these FAR superior Bad Reputation releases.

The Other side of midnight, That Girl y American Girls: grandísimos temas de AOR, auténticas joyas. DISCO 10/10.

For me this is a blueprint for AOR. It´s the aor. Tracks like 'That girl' and 'Hot wired' are emotions that make me feel something special. I have the luck to have the Remastered cd from BGO records that included 4 bonus included the incredible 'Heart of the matter' and this week i bought the new remasterd version edited right this year. I have no words to describe this cd. I only like to say that this is the AOR, the best AOR cd relased ever 10/10.Contact with me at:westofsunset@hotmail.com

SC FOREVER!!! JEJE.

Absolute Classic. I grew up with Wildlife (Kings Lynn) and the Overlands were destined for something big. However i think a really bad record label, the departure of Chris and the firing of Didge Digital completely ruined what could and should have been the most successful band of it's genre. This is a masterpiece with Face to Face and Heart of the Matter at the top of a bunch of songs the likes of which will never be suppassed on one record. (The original album cover is different)

I too remember this first time round and being blown away by it. This and 'Out Of The Silence' made us think that England was the centre of the rock universe (for about three days). As I listen to the album now it sounds a little dated and possibly even a little lite (even to my ears), but the melodies are still exceptional, the plying is flawless and the production is top-draw. When you remember that it's a debut, it knocks your socks off. 98/100

You are spot on DanDare!!!...this album is a piece of AOR history and England 4 sure at that moment were in a "Tight Fight" with the U.S AOR which somehow still manages to attract some people over there even with the Nu Metal invasion and all those crappy bands (not gonna mention any). The album is just perfect and timming in all aspects with strong combination of good lyrics and musicianship,"Frozen Heart" is still one of the most beautiful AOR ballads ever and "That Girl" still sounds as fresh as when it first came out!!!.100/100

Another huge disappointment. After reading a lot of comments about this CD I had high expectations, but even after several listens I'm just not hearing what many of you hear with these songs. I prefer it to Tough It Out, but only 'I Belong To The Night' and 'That Girl' will be played again. A real shame, as 'That Girl' is a great way to kick off an album, an excellent song, but that standard is never reached again over the first two albums in my opinion.

Well,!!! i think that is a good album,,not a big thing,Not suprise,,!!!! but i really think the problem is that i listened tough it out before,? My God,,,Tough it out is so powerful,,so hard rock,,and sooooooooooo much better for me,,in the same league than 220 volt eye to eye,,treat the pleasure principle,,pretty maids jump the gun,,anyway,,i'm just sad a bit that i buy this one,but this is a great AOR classic album,,7 on 10,,,Thanks,,

I have an live bootleg that sounds so much better than this 'high-polished' production. It's a fm broadcasted in Glasgow, 1986. They also play some songs of their 2nd album.

Never understood all the hype about this album. It's a decent album with a few stand-out songs (That Girl, I Belong To the Night,Love Lies Dying) but I don't think it sounds as strong as the Treat, Strangeways, H.E.A.T albums. 78/100
