Best Rock album ever! Thank you GN'R for the great inspiration, you'll always be #1

From: Klaus Date: March 28, 2001 at 18:43
This is junk. It really took metal and jammed a knife into it's heart. Perversion of genre. Very irritating. No polish or presence. Classless and sloppy. I will give them and Nirvana (Nerve-racking) one thing. ..It hasn't been the same since. Forget this one, and get Dream theater's Images and words. You will see what I mean.

From: anirudh Date: April 5, 2001 at 1:53
the greatest album ever.keep up the good work.know something ******* crazy

From: Jennifer Date: April 25, 2001 at 14:51
goddamn classic.

From: TIM Date: May 12, 2001 at 22:09
By far the best cd ever.

From: RockDude Date: May 18, 2001 at 13:20
Not the best CD ever,,,but one of the best. This one is still a kicker after all these years. A MUST FOR ANY REAL HARD ROCK FAN..

From: Stu Date: June 13, 2001 at 22:59
No matter what you think about Axl, this album is one of the top 10 best Hard Rock records of all-time. It injected somethin' that was missing during the early 80's and gave it life. I will never forget, since I was in my 3rd year of college when this hit the stores. The two big records were The Cult and Guns & Roses... History has already placed the original Guns band in the book. Its written, and still today, it sounds fresh. Guns never were able to get it together like this...

From: Mike G Date: June 26, 2001 at 13:51
Undeniably one of the best all time hard rock albums, EVER!! They were great until they decided to have 9 members in their band and the fact that AXL has a bad attitude made me stop listening to their music!! If the original members were still together, i'd love it!!!!!!

From: Sal Date: July 8, 2001 at 15:27
I remember yesterday every time I hear this work of art, it takes me back to the fun times!

The #1 lp ever

From: Rob Date: October 10, 2001 at 10:56
One of the all best hard rock albums!

From: T-BONE Date: October 11, 2001 at 23:08
Awesome cd, but they fell off the boat after this one. Petty differences within the band and axl's shitty attitude on everything led to crappy songwriting and eventually a break up. Now a chubby Axl is trying to revive GNR? Let it rest!! You are a Has Been now. You killed your career on your own. Without the Original line up you'll be nothing.

From: jose Date: October 28, 2001 at 14:27
es sin discursion el mejor disco de la historia del rock nada mejor que este disco resume la siguiente palabra ROCK N ROLL es sencillamente abrumador escuchar a Axl cantar ,clasico entre los clasicos un 11 OBRA MAESTRA

From: metal_man73 Date: October 31, 2001 at 13:28
I agree with everyone except Klaus and Jose(i don't speak Spanish). If "Rocket Queen" was the only song on the cd, I would still pay for!!! The whole cd kicks ass though!

From: Harvey Date: November 17, 2001 at 5:51
Very good but, let's be honest, it's overplayed and overrated. Hasn't dated too well either. The high register vocals tend to grate a bit.

From: Dragonfly Date: December 13, 2001 at 8:59
This is their best release. After this one they lost their APPETITE for song writing. Welcome to the jungle of trying to figure out what happen to them after this release.

From: joe Date: December 13, 2001 at 9:15
Got to be the bench mark for hard rock. all time classic. If you haven't got this by now you must be from another planet.

From: koogles Date: January 3, 2002 at 7:44
This CD tilted the axis of late 80s hard rock and changed music irreversibly. This is one of the best rock n' roll albums ever recorded. The attitude never got in the way of the songwriting chops/musicianship and vice versa. This is a "how-to" lesson in creating the perfect album. TIMELESS and ESSENTIAL!

From: Kim Date: January 18, 2002 at 15:26
This was a great album. These guys had it all, but really screwed up afterwards. Axl Butthead, and `Im having a bad hairday, everyday`Slash, Made some magic on this one. After this one its just down, down down for them.

From: matt stevens Date: January 31, 2002 at 13:08
Extremely overrated. Slash was the ONLY high point of this poor excuse of a band. Buy this garbage only if you need a laugh.

From: Knuckles Date: February 2, 2002 at 3:45
These guys are the luckiest band I have heard. It is a good cd but to say things liked changed the music for ever?best cd ever? Yeah right. If you call this a classic, you must call all the 80's hair bands classics and best evers as well.Good video of welcome to the jungle. No video,no GNR bottomline.

From: mindy Date: February 3, 2002 at 8:56
I think this album is awesome. It has all the rock n roll elements that are missing in todays music. 9 out of 10.

From: George Date: February 10, 2002 at 16:46
If you say this album isn't a classic then you don't appreciate music at all. Whether you like or dislike Axl or G N'R's later recordings, this album is pure rock from start to finish. Listen to this one in your headphones and hear every chop, every bass line, every drum beat, and find yourself standing in awe.

From: HG Date: February 16, 2002 at 20:56
Possibly my all-time favorite CD. The thing that makes it so good is the fact that the band wrote songs about something they knew well: the seemy underbelly of the LA rock scene. There were a few of these types of songs on the later CDs, but the band "progressed" by writing about things they knew nothing about, like war. Then they self-destructed. Oh well, I guess Neil Young had it right when he said it was better to burn out than to fade away.

From: chaman Date: February 17, 2002 at 6:21
Well ok maybe not the best cd of all time but without doubt their best one. One thing for sure, their sound change the bon jovi formulated crap of those days! The album made history the same as Nirvana (wich by the way destroyed the world as we knew it) Hope MTV will someday explode!!

From: marley's my son Date: February 27, 2002 at 3:31
The only review that I agree with is by Knuckles. STUPID thing to say that this changed music, forever! But it has some good songs, though.

From: Metalhead Date: March 30, 2002 at 10:33
OK, everybody now, repeat after me, AXL ROSE IS STUPID!!!!!!!

From: Date: April 4, 2002 at 18:35
o.k, axl is stupid, but this cd, rocks!!!! from begin to end.

From: Desslar Date: April 5, 2002 at 12:26
Obviously a total classic. Fantastic songs with attitude to spare. If only they'd kept going.

From: Motley Date: May 16, 2002 at 13:40
Axl is an overrated vocalist and totally a fucked up cheese cake. Wish he would follow Kurt Cobains footsteps coz he really got dynamite in his head. yes this cd is the best one they ever did-pure great street hardrock and the punch to follow. A pity they didnt follow it up and had to make horrible cd's as Use I and II. never liked them. I dont blame them for loosing it all-drugs really got to them, or was it AXL?

From: SHAG Date: May 16, 2002 at 15:31
a very overated album. 5 out of 10.

From: Swoop360 Date: May 16, 2002 at 17:07
Slash is amazing! Those solos are out of this world! And Axel's voice could curdle milk it's so sour, but dammit, does it ever make the song! One of my favorite albums of all time....right behind Dookie by Green Day.

From: Rockforever Date: June 12, 2002 at 14:19
Some of the criticisms of this album are absolutely unbelievable, and in my opinion if you dislike this record you cannot claim to be a serious hard rock fan. Although the Use Your Illusion sets saw greater variety and probably better musicianship, this album was the most cohesive the band made. From the opening notes of Welcome To the Jungle to the closing seconds of Rocket Queen, this album is one of the best hard rock albums ever, and undoubtedly the best hard rock records ever.

From: knuckles Date: June 13, 2002 at 4:55
Dont dislike it,just isnt even close or doesnt deserve the BEST EVER status it seems to get.Its good, not great but to each his own

From: jason (FA - Q) Date: June 13, 2002 at 16:56
I don't know?........ It's hard not to say that this is one of the top hard rock albums of all time. Maybe not rock albums, but hard rock - YES! It goes right up there with Back In Black, Zep. IV and Blizzard Of Ozz. BUT, I don't think it is better than any of those (eccept maybe Blizzard).

From: Reno Date: June 13, 2002 at 22:07
I agree with jason on this cd. It may not be the number one release in my book, but it is definately in the top 5. Even being considered for one of te top 10 should be honor enough. This did however set alot of standards for hard rock when it came out and there were alot of bands scrambling to keep up to their fast climb to the top. It's a very aggressive and in your face cd, and I still listen to it on a regular basis. Many cd's have burned out on me, but this one still sounds good in 2002.

From: Rockforever Date: June 25, 2002 at 12:39
I think Knuckles is mistaken by saying that anyone who thinks this is one of the greatest albums ever lacks broad musical knowledge. I have a vast number of Cds which range from the birth of rock and roll's inception in the late 1950s right up to the present day, and I do believe that this record is one of the top 5 hard rock records of all time. He should take account of the fact that musical taste is an individual thing. Others may think his top 5 is a pile of shit!!

From: Kim Date: June 25, 2002 at 18:37
Right, taste is individual. Personally I really like this one. Apart from that I think that GNR sucks. Axl is an awful singer. And a fucked up personality. Someone will certantly disagree with that. But then again, taste is individual, and many think that Nirvana - Nevermind is an alltime top 10 release. Fair enough. BUT I cant stand it. To me its a load of selfdistructive crap. GNR burned out too quick I think.

From: jason (FA - Q) Date: July 6, 2002 at 12:31
I don't know what it is with these foreigners that come to H. Harmonies and their hang-up with homosexualety? I find alot of them talking about it or accusing others here on this site of being one. It must be some sort of "closet" issue with them? ANYWAY....... GnR made a fantastick album. It's one of those albums that can stand the test of time. To me, it still sounds so fresh. Some albums/bands sound so dated. This one is good! Real good!

From: jens Date: July 20, 2002 at 1:41
street rock i remember calling it when it came out. it is a classic, no doubt, and most of the songs are truly great. GnR could have gone a long way, but if Marilyn Manson is quoted saying about Axl "Man, he's WEIRD", that should say it about all.

From: jason (FA - Q) Date: July 20, 2002 at 1:45
Jens, What the hell are you talking about? You lost me there...... All though you are on to something...... This is a great album!!

From: jason (FA - Q) Date: July 20, 2002 at 1:51
HEY T-BONE! You understand what I am talking about, don't you? Thanks for helping me teach those less fortunate solo's! After your last comment on this page, they all seem to have gone away. NICE JOB!!

From: Rocket King Date: July 22, 2002 at 5:33
Sorry to ruin the GNR bashers' day, but if I could only keep one CD in my collection of 400+, this would be it. Stop worrying about whether or not you like the individuals(like they care) and listen to the music. This did change the face of rock and I can hear Welcome over and over and never get sick of it. Incidently though, how bad a drug problem must Steven Adler have had to have these guys throw him out!!!!!

From: RichieRocker Date: August 18, 2002 at 11:46
The rating is pretty low for this album, I was surpised at that. This is a must have album for any rock fan!!

From: TIM Date: August 18, 2002 at 12:18
It used to be 9.3. Some morons came along that hate them and put a 1 rating until they got it to where they thought it ought to be. If someone hates the entire genre then they have no right to criticize. If you like the genre but not this album then you have a right to say something. One idiot on here likes Hip Hop and criticizes all the bands. He has no business here. Also, some people judge it because of Axl's lifestyle instead of focusing on the quality of the album.

From: TIM Date: August 18, 2002 at 12:24
I've heard people say Don Dokken was a prick. George was a whiner. I don't care what they are like, I just like the albums (at least the early stuff). There's also alternative addicts here that have no right to speak out. I don't go to the alternative or hip hop site's and give every band a low rating. Some of these guys claim to be knowledgable about music but really they just have little taste or they don't own enough music. The may claim the own thousands, but a large amount is probably

From: TIM (CONT'D.) Date: August 18, 2002 at 12:29
albums not wanted on this site. If you have 2,000 cds and 95% is 60s tunes, who cares how many you have.

From: jarett r. Date: September 3, 2002 at 22:56
i've heard that axl rose was in l.a. guns before he was in guns'n'roses. axl rose was also in the bands axl and rose. (i swear i'm not making this up!) i've heard that tracii guns played on live like a suicide (the first half of lies) and appetite for destruction UNCREDITED.

From: jamie Date: September 6, 2002 at 9:05
best cd i have ever heard if u like hard rock you must get this cd!!!!!!!

From: HairMetalManiac Date: September 7, 2002 at 9:38
Talk about a band that peaked and blew their wad on the debut album. I very much (and still do today) enjoy this album. No matter how much of a GNR basher you might be, this is a fantastic album. Too bad the rest of what the did was garbage. They may have been more popular than LA Guns, but LA Guns kicks GNR's ass...

From: purrfect-kat Date: September 7, 2002 at 21:14
ok this time I will agree with you HairMetalManiac that this cd Rocks!! . . . but I won't go as far as saying LA Guns is better cuz I think Axel has a style that no one can duplicate and I just love that about him . . . He has such passion when he sings and I wish they could have made more cds like this one or better yet another tune like November Rain would have been nice too. . .(God I love that tune and Slash is amazing on guitar) . . . I want the wedding dress she had in the video. . . lol

From: Dennis Clark Date: September 10, 2002 at 4:53
A real stunning one. this album undeniably re-invented the L.A. rock scene. Where is Axl now? where is the real Guns N' Roses? We need them to kick the asses of all the faggot-boyband crap, and all those immature, trying-hard, rap-metal bratts. Only a much awaited Guns N' Roses reunion could straighten things up in today's rock music scene. We need these real men. Only real men know how to rock.

From: Baris Date: September 12, 2002 at 5:41
This is the album that made HISTORY. There have and will never be a stuff like this anymore. In my opinion, other albums of GNR unfortunately fall far behind this. For me if they had not released anything more, it would have made no difference. This one would be well enough for them to be remembered as a legend as in the case of SEX PISTOLS. Recently, I watched in the news that they've come together years later and played somewhere in Latin America. They've looked like out-dated poor old players

From: jarett r. Date: December 10, 2002 at 23:19
before guns'n'rose axl rose was in l.a. guns, hollywood rose, axl, and rose. anyone notice the similarity between the names l.a. guns and hollywood rose? i've heard that izzy stradlin was also in the bands axl, rose, and hollywood rose.

From: MALLORCA´S ROCK Date: December 30, 2002 at 13:29

From: rocker65 Date: December 31, 2002 at 1:40
When I was about 12 I heard this band Guns N' Roses. Since then I Am the most happiest man. SInce then I walk on right path of Rock N' Roll. I'll never forget you GUNS N' ROSES. Especially SLASH who is a living LEGEND... And the CD - the best CD of GN'R for sure. Every Hard Rock fan must have this. Who didn't hear for Guns N' Roses and songs like Sweet Child O'mine, Paradise City, Patience... has no right called himself a rock fan... This month I have a dream It Says: TO ROCK OR NOT TO BE

From: Sinner Date: December 31, 2002 at 2:00
Its a cool CD, I like GnR. Their cool. I heard their back again, but instead of Slash being the lead guitar, it's some retarded chicken guy that feels for chickens and is going to try and save all the chickens in the world. And during concert, I guess he wears a stupid buckit on his head. He's weirder then Axl! (weird guy)

From: Brian Date: December 31, 2002 at 2:58
A must have CD for any hard rock fan!!! A perfect blend of sleaze and glam molded together with sick guitar playing by Slash.Every song on this is a classic!!!

From: jason (FA - Q) Date: January 29, 2003 at 2:20
Who would have thought??? The original boys of GnR along with Mike Matijevic (Steelheart) have been working together on a new Gun's project. Mike has written lyrics and sang 4 songs with Slash, Izzy, Duff, and Matt. Info. at www.steelheart.com

From: Great Dane Date: January 29, 2003 at 17:57
Cool. Atleast they will have a singer this time. I never liked Axl. I met him once and he was just a big an idiot as I had expected. Never liked his singing, and live it sucked. But two weeks ago I got two Bootlegs by GNR. Theyre both Soundboard and ex quality. He`s really good on some of it, but damn he suxx too.

From: Trick Taylor Date: January 30, 2003 at 5:43
Mad Mikey singing with the G-n-R boys? Makes my Trick tingle just thinking about it! Other good fits would be Joel Ellis and Brad Sinsel! I heard Orchestral Manuevers In The Dark are reforming and Steve Perry will be singing! I think Sebastian Bach, Dave Mustaine, Peter Criss, Duff McKagan should form a band called "You're Fired!" At least they didn't pick somebody lame to sing with them, like the dude from Heaven's Edge. We call him "Mr. No Range". Skin on Skin! (flat)

From: robert Date: January 30, 2003 at 14:57

On the band's name: It was first called Axl, then Rose, then Hollywood Rose, then Axl quit & joined Tracii Guns' band, L.A.Guns. Then Axl left to rejoin Izzy in Hollywood Rose (bringing Tracii with him). The band was renamed to Guns n Roses. Before the first tour Tracii & the drummer backed out so they called 2 guys (Slash and Steve Adler) from another band that Duff was playing in called Road Crew. Slash and Steve joined the band 2days before their first tour (1986) & the rest is history.

Pretty decent at the time of release, but now it has aged, and not a little bit. It hasn't stood the test of time in my opinion. Some songs are still good, others are so aged I can't listen to them any more. And the voice of Axl is sometimes very boring to listen to. No, this is their best, no mistake about that, but a classic band they never were in my opinion although I have to agree they made a major influence on the music scene, but that was the same with Nirvana and Nirvana is CRAP, GnR not

This took sleazy glam to a whole other level and kicked it squarely in the testes. The greatest debut album ever. A friend of mine once drank 5 beers in the 6:13 that it takes to get through 'Rocket Queen'. That's what a great band does. It affects your personality to the point that you'll do stupid shit that will make you vomit. GnR does that to you.

I think this is their best album ever. Axl´s voice fits so good in these tracks and Izzy and Slash are so good. Hard to pick one track that is better than others. Axl was huge fan and inspired by Hanoi Rocks(Mike Monroe), but what this guy did last year: Axl didn´t want to perform on the same stage, where Hanoi Rocks did their comeback since 1985. Hanoi Rocks did their gig in a smaller stage. Compare: Hanoi Rocks: "Twelve Shots On The Rocks" or any Axel´s latest recordings? Cadillac vs. Lada

From: RR-Finland Date: September 2, 2003 at 7:20
...What my point is, Axl W. Rose is a star and one those great idols for many todays singers, but man like Michael Monroe who´s still those guys who dare dress himself like most of hair bands in mid 80´s and man who is still in his glam/hard rock roots, needs a little bit more respect. By the way, you can also hear Mike on the backrounds and find he´s foto from inner sleeve in Use Your Illusion.

From: Knuckles Date: December 1, 2003 at 8:34
I dug out this release and listened to it and I have a few more comments. The mvp of this release hands down is Slash. He is a pretty decent musician.Axl on the other hand man oh man talk about vocals that mirror the ole fingernails down the chalk board sound. So,I guess my newest review is a for sure buy but I would prey for the karoke release and get that instead.

From: Edu Martins Date: December 14, 2003 at 14:15
This album made me listen hard rock and heavy metal and forget those dumb pop songs. I was 12 or 13 when i listened this album, and since there im a true fan of them. Unfortunatly, Axl Rose is an asshole, and dismembered all the band, or all the band leaved him alone. I hope Axl quit music now and stop using Guns and Roses name to make money and do your own solo projects under that name...

From: byrdman69 Date: December 15, 2003 at 12:00
Anyone who thinks this release isn't one of the all time best must still be stoned from huffing gasoline. It doesnt matter that Axl Rose is a nut case, and a jack -ass, everything was right on this one. The timing was right, and rock music needed the kick in the ass that Appetite provided. Axl, in my opinion isn't a really great singer, but somehow makes this one work. Slash is a good guitar player and is truely underrated. Every song on here rocks, and it is one of the most kick-ass cd's ever!

From: Knuckles Date: December 15, 2003 at 20:29
I appreciate your opinion dude,so please appreciate mine. There were better releases in the same year, let alone of all time. Whitesnakes-S/T and Dokkens-Back for the attack just a name a couple of quick ones. A decent releases from a very over rated band,as it showed in all of the other releases they had which were pure shiiiiiiiiite Oh,and it wasnt gas.

From: Date: January 2, 2004 at 13:13
Hmmm, Dokken and Whitesnake, both excellent bands who did release albums of the same integrity, but better than Appetite? Don Dokken is a bigger prick than Axl.

This one was a milestone! It belongs in everybody's collection, whether you like heavy metal, hair metal, AOR or just plain rock & roll. They would never release another album as mandatory as this. I'm not saying subsequent releases were bad, but they couldn't touch this one!

From: Metal Pete Date: January 2, 2004 at 15:13
This album is one of the greatest rock albums ever released. Anyone who does not recognize that FACT either a)just hates Axl b)only likes 'intellectual' metal like aforementioned Dream Theatre. or c)never knew what hard rock was to begin with. I don't wish to take away anything from D.T., but they pale in comparison to this extremely important rock n roll cd. Probably the best 'party cd' ever recorded.

This was the first, and the best album I've heard in my entire life..I've heard more than 200 hard rock bands. There's no album that can challenge apettite. IT SOLD 4o million copies!!!! What made it great was that it was creative.it mixed a lot of different styles.great lyrics.great rythms(Steve).a real guitar duo (slah/stradlin).great solos.a top 5 rock bassist (Duff you're the best man!).Axl's great vocals.songwriting..the guys didn't care about what was going on the music scene.

Pocos albumes me impactaron tanto..podría mencionar Too Fast, Look what the cat, DRFSR, Out of the cellar, Blizzard of ozz, L.A.Guns

A classic. One of the all-time great hard rock albums, and probably one of the 10 best ever. I hear it still nets 5,000 copies sold some weeks on Soundscan. The ironic part is that the two Use Your Illusions were basically songs rejected for "Appetite", and those were great too. GNR was an incredible band, but boy they fell fast. Still wish these guys would get back together and reclaim their greatness...sigh.

From: jack Date: June 24, 2004 at 4:48
But you have to agree that Axl has a personality and character that no other vocalist of the genre have. Thats one of the reason why gun'n'roses was so popular back then. Do you see Don Dokken or Tom Keifer or jon bon jovi had such outrageous attitude. I mean, the guy(axl)is a media magnet who probably attract more attention than kurt cobain's death.

From: Rockhead Date: June 24, 2004 at 5:17
Jack what is your problem with Kurt Cobain's death?? you seem to mention this event on a very regular basis. Guns N Roses did well because the album was choc full of great songs and with Aerosmith not producing GNR took their opportunity. Axl single handedly wrecked GNR and turned them into the laughing stock they know are. The Chinese Conspiracy will never see the light of day. He simply cannot cut it without the others. He is a destructive ego who rarely give interviews-hardly attention grabin

I mean, for real, the guy sounds like a pissed off cat. IMO Slash is what made Guns and Roses a good band. Axel just totally screwed it up. A desparate band is good band! GNR were on the streets when they made this album and the raw anger and bitterness shows. In a sea of full of glam and hair metal, that was the 80s LA scene, GNR managed to stand out. The punk attitude of this album was another plus. Several songs a featured on a early demo that has unreleased takes of Don't Cry, Jumpin' Jack Flash, and Back Off Bitch. That demo should remixed and released like the recent Hollywood Rose demo CD!

What can i say about this band?I have never heard for themThis by all means is the best sleaze glam rock metal album.Axl has superb voice,Slash is great guitarist,Izzy is great rhythm guitarist and damn good song writter."Paradise city" is my personal fav.Another superb rockers are "Nightrain"(too bad there is no video for that one or for "Mr.Brownstone"),"Out to get me","Mr.Brownstone",My Michelle" and "Rocket Queen"."Sweet child o mine" is great too,but it became too much commercial.

Any die-hard Guns mania, please help. I've found Korean pressing of "Appettite For Destruction" CD and this is with only 9 tracks. Was it the reason why lyrics of those songs censored and deleted? All Korean copies are with only 9 tracks?

i was talking to one of my friends on the phone about guns n roses and he was saying that gnr lies came out first and that appetite for destruction was their second cd that came out i told him that appetite came out first and that lies came out second he kept on arguing with me about it i know that appetite came out first he doesn't seem to know his dates or whatever pretty good i just thought i'd share that with heavy harmonies

A sleaze/hair metal classic which every household should own, chock a block with hits which considering the content and bands intent to self destruct is a minor miracle. Unfortunately it was all down hill after this with the band becoming a bloated dinosaur in need of culling but lets remember the good times and those songs....Genius 100/100

(Right Ok i'll get kicked for this) GNR are WAAAAAAAYYY over rated, Axel is a good singer but his voice gyrates on my... Slash is nowhere near the guitarist people make him out hes good! yes...but thats it. He came up with some of the best rock riffs of the age but to say he's a great guitarist NO-WAY! Van Halen, Malmsteen, Pete Lesperance, Leo Leoni they are great Slash nah. They have some excellent songs and they are catchy and commercial to me there old and boring heard them to death, for new listeners I can understand why they rave about them. Excellent disc great anthem song's so buy it...KEEP ROCKIN ALL!!!

I'm not the kind of guy that gives a lot of 100% ratings, but I had to go all the way on this one. This is the album that got me into hard rock in the frist place, as a kid who was probably way too young for it. Hell, I couldn't understand much of what Axl was howling about anyway. This one definitely stands the test of time, brimming with attitude, great songs, and "ideas" without being overblown and pompous like later GnR would be. At this point, they just tore it up, and yet the music was deceptively simple. I mean, I listen to this record now, and I still pick up little nuances that I'd either forgotten about or never noticed before, and some of those riffs aren't as easy to play as they seem either. I learned a hell of a lot about music from this album, as a kid. Favorites are "Welcome To The Jungle," "It's So Easy," "Sweet CHild O' Mine" and "Rocket Queen."

From: WookieEnthal Date: July 10, 2009 at 4:06
This is the best album they ever recorded. Don't even bother with the rest...it's mostly covers and crappy ballads, meh.

The most overrated glam band in history. I listened to this for a while when it came out, and quickly got bored with it. Why all the fuss over this band I will never know.

From: JamesEagle Date: December 20, 2009 at 16:57
I hate hype and I hate to agree with the masses, but have to make an exception as this is just great. I'm not a huge fan of the vocals, but they don't detract from a collection of fantastic songs. All the songs rock, but for me 'Rocket Queen' and 'Welcome To The Jungle' might just about be the best. I can't think of many albums with 12 songs where I like all of them, but this is one. It hasn't aged a jot, simply a classic hard rock album.

From: metalmaniac777 Date: February 20, 2010 at 9:53
At a time when slick, glossy, pretty-boy hair-metal ruled the radio, these guys exploded onto the scene all guns blazing with their raw, sleazy, swaggering, gutter-dwelling, debauchery-drenched street-rock. And in the process, they created a rarely-paralleled masterpiece. Regardless of what the future holds, long after all the members of GNR are dead and gone and roses placed on their graves, this album will be remembered in the hallowed halls of rock-n-roll history as a bona fide classic. Maybe it was the band's unrepetant hunger, maybe it was Axl's distinctively sneering snarl, maybe it was Slash's seductive riffs...whatever the reason, something in this band's sound & attitude struck a chord, and the fact that they self-destructed with startling speed after this does not detract from the stunning hard rock power of this near-flawless debut.

From: lancer2430 Date: April 27, 2010 at 1:34
All is said and I can not agree more with Metalmaniac777 and the rest of you who adore this band. Human history will put this album among one of the greatest Hard Rock Album ever produce with a story of self destruction, tough life, and a bunch of ego maniac artist when combine together at the right time and place can create such a magical sound. I just hope that they still be blessed with health and longer life and with the help of Money and a crazy producer they can get back together and make another GnR album.

A quick review of the comments indicates those giving this less than 100 like a more metal sound, so let's all just agree to disagree. I mean, I don't think I have ever even listened to a Dokken or Whitesnake record. I give this a 100. I saw Welcome to the Jungle on MTV I'm guessing the summer of 1987 at my boss's building before I headed off to go to college full time at night after working all day (could not afford cable, and radio sucked in Houston) and had turned on the TV to listen while I finished work after 5 and had to stop with an OMG what the hell is this? That was it for about a year and a half, I listened to that album on the way to work, work to school, school to home. The teased hair look at the head of the comments cracks me up. Was surprised on Guitar mags top 100 guitar players that Slash is kind of far down -- I think he is the best player I have ever heard, I like his work better than Jeff Beck (gasp).

On october 30th 2010 Guns & Roses secretly performed private gig and showed their shitty asses in Moscow at private party and finally got one million dollars cash for their shit. The money owner and this private gig promoter is well known here in Russia as thief, tax infringers and corruptionist.

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: December 31, 2011 at 13:45
Well, I guess I lied three years ago when I first commented. I have the rating pegged at 98, instead 100. I guess if you made me pick one song that wasn't quite up to par, it'd be "Anything Goes," a leftover from the Hollywood Rose days that seems to fall just a little short of the quality of the other eleven tunes. Regardless, this album got me bit by the hard rock bug in elementary school, and permanently fried my wiring. I still did listen to some top-40 pop music for another couple years, mainly because it was hard to escape it, but with one exception--Was (Not Was)'s album with "Walk The Dinosaur" on it--I never bought another non-hard rock or metal album again, at least until I lost my way for a couple years in the mid-'90's when I tried (and failed) to make myself like the alt-rock that was popular at the time.

lets be honest guys this band was highly overated and they pretty much looked like street bums although gunners do still have a bit of a cult following here in australia. To say this is one of the greatest albums of all time is ludricous but if you must own one of thier albums this is it i hated them when i was young but have apreciated this cd only as i got older jungle, nighttrain, paradise city,mr brownstone and sweet child are good you're crazy is highly stupid but.I'm not saying it's not a good cd just not as great as people make it out to be and yes there were plenty of better albums out at this time and more bands with more talent

From: edwithmj Date: May 19, 2012 at 13:18
Why oh why didn't G'NR stick with this forumla and make a load of albums like this? This is some of the finest sleaze metal ever created. From the opener with Axl's screeching vocals everything was meant to be. Other highlights here are It's So Easy, Nightrain (simply fabulous), Out Ta Get Me, the perfect Mr. Brownstone, Paradise City with it's instantly recognisable lyrics, Think About You, Sweet Child O' Mine is way overplayed but on its own merit is another winner, You're Crazy, the hilarious Anything Goes and the melodic Rocket Queen are all winners. The only filler is My Michelle which is still better than a lot of other band's hits. Perfect apart from that and pretty much all the G'NR you'll ever need.

One of my favourite albums of all time. There are so many awesome songs on. I love them all with the exception of Anything goes, where they either should've used a different Hollywood Rose Song (like Rocker) or You Could be Mine and then it would've been perfect. So, it's only "near perfect". Nightrains my favourite song from it.

From: Kiss_Rules Date: February 11, 2015 at 17:17
Let's just be honest...if you don't love this album, then you simply don't like hard rock music. This band might not have changed music, but they put their stamp on the hard rock genre right out of the box with one of the best debut albums of all-time.

Hi Doug, I just can't get into the songs of this album. Only tracks 1,6,9 are worth listening, the rest is forgettable. This is a boring album imho.

From: CC Date: June 26, 2017 at 15:11
Hard to believe this album is now 30 years old, damn. This album was one of two albums that turned me to the heavier side of rock (prior to this it was light weight stuff like Huey Lewis and Springsteen etc). I did a brief scroll through some of the comments above, and while I accept everyone is entitled to their opinion, and tastes differ, I think that anyone who says this was not genre defining and is an grade A classic, is just being a troll. Hell, I can't stand Nirvana beyond a couple of songs, but their is no denying that that album is a classic and genre defining too. At a time when hair metal was getting over the top with make up, sexual innuendos and cliches galore, this one came out like a breath of stale air, ready to dirty things up. The songs were fantastic, and the attitude was there. While they were certainly not the heaviest band, they were heavy enough that they should not have had the popularity with the non rock crowd, but they did.

From: CC Date: June 26, 2017 at 15:15
Oh, and to anyone in the comments who say it has not held up with time is certainly a troll. The fact that this album continues to sell and is continuously finding new fans in a younger audience, that says straight away that this thing is timeless. As much as I love the 80s hair metal scene, there are very few albums from that era that still hold up today, and are still relevant. This is one of them. The sales it still generates, the tours they still sell out (even before the reunion) and the wide age range of fans cannot be wrong.

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: June 26, 2017 at 21:40
I agree completely with CC.Just look at the stuff that was coming out of L.A. pre-Appetite. Okay, you had Motley Crue, Ratt and Dokken at the top, but even most of their stuff is inextricably to the mid-'80's. Then below them, you had a lot of faceless, interchangeable bands like Black 'n Blue, Keel, King Kobra. This site is full of people saying how great those three were and how they should've been so much bigger. Bullshit. They were mean, median, and mediocre, and behind the facade was some very, very safe music.

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: June 26, 2017 at 21:45
And I dmit I'm working backwards here. Maybe Ready To Strike did sound like the unholy heavy-metal hordes to somebody, somewhere in 1985. Okay, let's try this: pull out the other big releases from '87. Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Dokken if you want, and maybe Great White. Now, quick: which one sounds LEAST like the others, the least like 1987? That's right--Appetite For Destruction. Only other contender is maybe The Cult's Electric. The rest, much as I love a lot of it, sounds like dated '80's metal.

From: titothetitan Date: November 9, 2017 at 6:06
Hello Doghouse, I recommend these Hard Rock albums wich imho are way better than AFD: Baton Rouge - Shake Your Soul (1989), Bonfire - Fire Works (1986), Fair Warning - S/T (1992), Shadow King - S/T (1991), Unruly Child - S/T (1992).

From: 123charpenay Date: November 9, 2017 at 13:23
hello titothetitan ,you have good taste.in fact there is one million hard rock bands better than gun and roses.

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: November 9, 2017 at 16:32
Tito: with the possible exception of Bonfire, the bands you named sound so safe and mild-mannered and so carefully calculated, compared to Appetite. None of them are bad bands, but they were totally faceless, interchangeable, by-the-book, plain-vanilla '80's rock. (And Bonfire are only a slight deviation.) And I mean by-the-book literally: their songs sound like they were written in a corporate boardroom instead of a garage. There's no accounting for taste, but come on, man!
