'Long Cold Winter' in my opinion, is Cinderella's BEST album of their four studios. It is the most well-balanced musically. The rockers, two very good ballads, mid-tempos--everything. There are maybe one or two tracks on the entire cd that aren't quite up to snuff but the rest are top-notch. 'LCW' is loaded full of catchy & original riffs & interesting beats as proven by tunes like 'Gypsy Road', 'Second Wind' and 'The Last Mile' and the ballads (particularly 'Coming Home') are fantastic. Buy it.

Although I haven't heard their first yet, I'll go with this as their best effort. Rockers, ballads, blues - it's got it all. Too bad things went downhill after this.

No, not completely. 'Heartbreak Station' was a total let-down, yes, but 'Still Climbing' contains some excellent material. Good ballads, fun rockers; I couldn't find a whole lot wrong with 'Still C..'. If you haven't already, you should listen to it. The only thing that I am curious about at this point with Cinderella is when the hell they will release another full length studio album with all-new originals. It has only been, LIKE, eight years--and counting.

Cinderella's new album is due out SOMETIME this year, one would guess by the time they head out on the summer tour with Poison. Then again they've been trying to finish that album for the last 3 years.

I guess we can agree on something, yet it is quite apparent. If Cinderella released a new studio record this year like you said they will, that would be great. If they don't, well........I'm not counting on it that much, either. Buy 'Still Climbing' if you haven't already.

'The Last Mile' is by far my favorite, but the whole album is excellent. I can't say enough about Night Songs and Long Cold Winter. To me, very few bands come close to these guys.

Jens. true, that this cd was made many years ago. But to me its still NOW. This cd stands up to all releases made today. Tonight we`re having a `guys`night at a friends place. Eventhough we`re kinda 'ld`now I know, this cd will be played again and again, and as the evening goes by, we will be drinking beer, and playing ``air guitar`` all night. Its a classic and classics never run out of time.

Much more varied than the first album, and not so varied that it takes away from the overall package like the next one will. I like this one, in its own way, as much as Night Songs, thus I gave 'em both 8.5's. The Fizz Picks here are 'Bad Seamstress BLues/Fallin' Apart At the Seams,' 'Don't Know What You Got ...' 'The Last Mile,' 'Comin' Home' and 'Take Me Back.' Now who REALLY played drums on this one?

What a nice album. My most favourite Cinderella CD. I cannot pick up a special favourite here cuz every song is great, still relevant sound and melodies for today. Makes me feel so happy, esp. after listening to the boring Heartbreak Station. Even if they pose just as a glam band, the music is sth. different, a mixture of rock, blues, country (esp. for Heartbreak Station) soul or southern. Anyway their best album and Night Songs was the second best.

Track for track the best Cinderella album. Even the songs that weren't released as singles were great. Cozy Powel(R.I.P.) played a lot of the drum tracks on this album due to Fred Coury having some kind of injury. The only studio album that Fred played on all the way through was HEARTBREAK STATION.

They've done it again! As I said in my previous review. Cinderella has got to be the best hair metal band ever, and after the monstrous release that was Night Songs, they come back again two years later and release yet another monstrous heavy and bluesy album that just drips with attitude. While Long Cold Winter may be a little blusier than its predicesor, it doesn't change the fact that Long Cold Winter is without a doubt one DAMN GOOD follow up from the best hair metal band of the 80's!!!!!

I was at the Judas Priest concert in Toronto in '88 when these guys opened for them, and I couldn't believe how utterly dull an opening act could be. It seemed like Keifer used a different guitar for each song, but it didn't help any -- and judging by the overwhelming number of butts glued to the seats and catcalls of, 'Get off the stage!', it was obvious I wasn't the only one whose snores were in danger of drowning out the band. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Axe..I saw them about 90-92...playing with Extreme and David Lee Roth (DLR was TERRIBLE!) but regarding Cinderella, NEVER have I heard a band that was so tight and sounded so close to the sound on their albums (okay maybe the Queensryche Op Mindcrime concert)...the vocals, guitars and timing atleast the night I saw them were near perfect...Maybe Im a little biased seeing how I like just about anything/everything they ever produced but they were awesome that night..Quote the WidoMakr...Never More

I saw Cinderalla a few years ago with Poison, Slaughter and Dokken. Cinderella stole the show! Poison and Slaughter put on a good show as well. It was Dokken who sucked. I swear that Don Dokken's feet must have been stapled to the stage because he didn't move for the entire show. He was also singing out of key, cracking, and generally just having a bad night. (I like Dokken and have seen them several other times where they were good.) In anycase, Cinderella rocked! This CD is a favorite of mine.

Oh to be a fly on the wall when the record label heard this one. Debut album was all AC/DC mega riffage and they follow it with what can only be described as a blues album!...mind you it sold by the truckload. Great stuff. I was 17 when this came out and Tom Keifer was the coolest man alive in our eyes and ears. We all ripped our jeans in replication of his pose on the back cover. Fantastic days!

This album took a LOT of people by surprise because it was so much more mature than NIGHT SONGS. Where a lot of NIGHT SONGS sounded like it was written in five minutes on the back of a cocktail napkin, LONG COLD WINTER was the sound of a band coming into their own sound. I saw them touring this album in 1988 opening for Judas Priest, and even though it was kind of a weird combo, I enjoyed 'em both. Too bad the drunks yelling 'DIE YOU AIDS VICTIMS!' didn't, 'cos they missed some good music!
|
From: Dean |
Date: January 7, 2004 at 15:48 |
Very mature sounding release compared to the first album. The first was just balls out hard rock. On this we find Cinderella feeling very reflective on the past. The rockers even seem a little depressive and even their look got a little more darker. This is one from the 80's that seems to actually get better with age. Killer disc.

This album is simply de best after night songs. Don't know what you got(till it's gone) is the best rock/metal ballad in my opinion, after nobody's fool. This ballad is better than any of bon jovi ballad except secret dream(=). A bit bluesier than night songs! Fire and ice is one rocking songs! Tom keifer got the best voice in the business and jeff was probably the best guitarist in that days. [Cinderella is simply the best there is,the best there was and the best there will ever be!]full stop!

i got no problem with bon jovi except that i think their music is original but boring:they should experiment more like cinderella. All bonjovi do is produce ballads which is what they do best and what got them famous. Their music like warrant and white lion, are too pussy and popsy. They are also way overated. But i have to thank em anyway for making cinderella not a fairytale if ya know what i mean!

This album sees Cinderella shift into more of their blues and roots rock influence. Though many bands have failed doing this before, Cinderella pull it off with hard rocking songs 'Gypsy Road' and 'Fire & Ice' and also the mellower tracks such as 'The Last Mile'. 8/10

Cinderella took the power of 'Night Songs' and infused some blues-inspired hard rock and presto:'Long Cold Winter'. They work together just fine on 'The Last Mile', 'Bad Seamstress Blues/Fallin' Apart At The Seams' and 'Gypsy Road'. 'Coming Home' is a good up-tempo ballad but they are peerless on 'Don't Know What You Got (Til It's Gone)'. Greta stuff. 9.5/10.

Lovely album, a great work of hard-rock-meets-blues. The first side is a true classic, with some awesome highlights like 'Fallin' Apart At The Seams' (possibly my favourite Cinderella song ever) and the well known 'Gipsy Road'. Side B is weaker but gets some serious points with the bluesy title track and mostly with the very nice semi-ballad 'Comin' Home'. In a few words, however, this is a must have!

It would be easier for me to say that the song 'Second Wind' is the only track on this CD that I don't find to be FABULOUS! Every other song on this release is incredible. Keifer and the guys veered away from the glammed-up rock of their first release, and went in a bluesy direction on this one, and in the process, produced a piece of hard rock history.'Gypsy Road' & 'Don't Know What You Got' are definitely my faves, but tracks 2,5,8, & 10 RAWK as well. Essential CD here...

I have seen these guys twice in the last 5 years. First with Dokken and Great white. Dokken rocked, Great White blew. Jack Russell is an asshole. All he did the whole set was complain. The second time was with Poison, Dokken, and Slaughter. Poison, Dooken and Slaughter all rocked. By far both times Cinderella blew then all away. Great vocals, guitar and showmanship. The double guitar-twists were the shit. I love that stuff man. I wish they would hit Oklahoma city soon. Dallas is too far to go.

And if i want 80's music,i would try thrash metal like megadeth, celtic frost and overkill or true metal like saxon, manowar, blind guardian and iron maiden than people who only sings about girls, sex, love and cars...pathetic! Hardcore,i agree with you about thrash metal. I love anthrax, merciful fate, venom, morbid angel, motorhead and megadeth a lot but i wouldn't say hair metal bands or hard rock band is a joke. Nu-metal bands are the joke. Thrash metal got the intensity and power but it lacks the fun and catchy elements in it. That is something that glam and pop metal have. But both thrash and hair metal have something in common talents which is something nu-metal don't.

Kinda agree with you Jack, except regarding nu metal. This genre is full of boring and untalented followers but I think there are some bands that deserve credit. In fact as for many genres, even grunge on which nearly everybody is now spitting on, especially on this site. And it is never a genre that kills another, it is the music industry and medias.

I don't like these kinds of vocals, but I think this is a very good hard rock CD. I love the ballad, 'Don't know what you got', overall the guitar is awesome, and to be honest there isn't really a single track here I dislike. Good solid 80's hard rock... I'm just so curious as to know why Orietto thinks that to not like this you have to be young. I'm 25 (Which I hope is relatively young) and I love this disc. What does age have to do with it?? Good music is good music, appreciation is individual

sorry Geoff but i do not change my mind as i'm sure that to really feel and appreciate releases edit between 1982-1988 you must have 'lived' it to really understand what's that great period it was! anyway i appreciate younger people as you but sorry on 1986 i supposed you were too young to see live-shows mtv videos and all the atmosphere that surrounded our LOVED TUNEZ !

It's definitely my fave Cinderella cd,much more mature and solid than their debut. The ballad'Don't know what you got'is amazing,'The last mile'has a good melodick arrangements and totally I like the disc.Agree with Geoff:guitarist is excellent and shows really a good taste here.Singer is not my fave kind of voice but it's ok for their music,IMO.My second fave Cinderella cd is'Still climbing..',what a great production has that album, mate!

Great album from these underated blues hard rockers! This album was a more mature release than the debut, and thus is better! Half the album are absolute gold nuggets! Don't Know What You Got being the jewel in the crown! But classic rockers like Last Mile, Gypsy Road and Fallin Apart At The Seams are awesome as well. And Coming Home just tops it off towards the end of the album! The other tracks certainlt aint bad, just don't match the brilliance of the other songs! Their best album! 9/10....

Without a doubt Cinderella is not a hair band like others. Today their music is a reference, without any label and no album they're headliners on the road. Both Long Cold Winter and Heartbreak Station are masterpieces in melodic rock history. Personally this last is the top for the band.

well, I started seeing the band when MKSmith from BFox and a great drummer Tony Destra were in the band for a while, hanging at the same club and watching Cinderella play, even being in a few bands that opened for them, saw them every Sat till they were signed for a few years was very cool, I love all the stuff, especially LCW. This one took the band to new heights, from metal to hard rock and is absolutely stunning, all songs r strong, what a great album!!!!

This is a great follow up to Night Songs. A little more blues is infused in their music here. I have to agree that it is an underated album by some. My favorite tracks are 'Gypsy Road' and 'Coming Home'.

Overall, this album is a highlight to their career. Rockers & ballads abound, which will exceed most hard rock fans expectations. At least 4 tracks were heavily rotated on MTV & the band never climbed any higher in the US.

If your hair-metal collection is 'Fallin' Apart at the Seams,' then make sure this classic is in it, and never part with it, 'cause ya 'Don't Know What You Got Till it's Gone.' This one cranks full-throttle right from the start through 'The Last Mile' and doesn't even need to pause to catch its 'Second Wind.' Not owning this album would as bad as spending a 'Long Cold Winter' in Antarctica without any clothes on. Quite frankly, I like this CD a lot, and 'If You Don't Like It,' I don't care...

I know I am way late with this, but here it is anyhow. Hardcore, While I love all the heaviest of the heavy (Thats why I go by Metalmusicman), I also love good melodic metal as well. If loving melodic metal as well as heavy metal makes me a pussy...then yes I am. In fact I am the biggest, fattest, juciest one in the bunch. So you should definitely EAT ME!!! You little but nugget!!! Sorry for posting that here!

Now for the cd, Excellent blues/rock with a nice sleaze edge and heavy on the guitars. Still a little hit and miss for my tastes, but very damn good none the less. The blues guitar intro of 'Bad Seamstress Blues' flowing right into the drum pounding, bass thumping 'Falling Apart At The Seams' is perfection and a great way to kick things into motion. We all know that 'Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)' is one of the best ballads ever. Very good, but not great all the way through.

My favorite Cinderella album by far. Oh my God What a year!! I enjoyed this album very much. Great Songs like 'Coming Home'(played in a local radio station many times and one of my best personal ballads of all times), 'Don't Know What You Got' 'Gypsy Road' 'Fire And Ice' 'If You Don't Like It'... A classic on my shelf. 9/10

This is definitely Cinderella's best album. All songs are good. Some of them are GREAT! It was 1988 and this kind of music was everywhere. Unlike many other 'hair bands' from this period, Cinderella had something different. They wrote very good songs, and they were a solid band. I only think that they took too long to record again after 'Long Cold Winter'. Nevertheless, this is a top rock album. 'Gipsy Road', 'Coming Home', 'Don't Know What You've Got...' This are the best songs in a very consis

this is by far the best album musically that the cinderfella's have ever done from start 2 finish it's brilliant i like all their albums but this has everything great rockers great blues and beautiful ballads and tommy kieffer man what a voice it's funny i have all their albums but when i introduce people 2 this band i always hand them this cd and have never got a bad review yet by the way did u all know that fred coury did not play the drums on this album even though he is credited it was actually the late cozy powell

It's pretty much an open secret that Fred Coury only played on Heartbreak Station, but Cozy Powell? I thought it was Kevin Valentine, a session player or drum tech or something. Anyway, as for the album, I agree that it's musically their best, and pretty much sums up everything Cinderella did. It does have some pretty forgettable songs in the second half, though, like "Fire And Ice." A great, talented and diverse band all the same, brought down by their ridiculous image on the first two releases.

was their image really ridiculous doghouse bear in mind it was '86 when night songs came out everybody looked like that i didn't know coury only played heartbreak but yeah this was cozy on the drums they had a special on cozy when he died in the classic rock mag i was stunned 2 find out he played this album can't say i've heard of kevin valentine and i think ur being a bit harsh doghouse the second side was fine lookat coming home

Yeah, even by '86/'88 standards, I think their look was among the more outlandish, and even then made people think they were just another fruity, no-substance band. The name probably didn't help either, hindsight being what it is. As for the second side, "Coming Home" is one of my favorite songs of theirs, except that it drags on seemingly forever, but ... yeah, "Fire and Ice" and "If You Don't Like It" don't really do it for me.

the first record had some blues influence, but that one has it for sure. here's a lot of great songs but the best ones are Bad Seamstress Blues (Fallin' Apart At The Seams)-great intro, Gypsy Road Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)-very touchin' ballad and Coming Home-another ballad that will leave you breathless.

The high-pitched vocals may be an acquired taste, but there's no denying the quality of these songs. As it happens, I love the vocals and this is one of the best albums I've ever heard. For me, 'Fallin' Apart At The Seams', 'Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)' and 'Long Cold Winter' are probably the best tracks, but it's not really fair to pick standouts as the whole album is so unbelievably good. There are a few other Cinderella songs I like, but I don't think any of their other albums even gets close to this one. Classic.

Great album for me, close to the Blues sound but with a classic touch,I´m not a fan of Cinderella but the songs here:Gypsy Road,Don´t Know...(awesome ballad),If you don´t like it(great solo!),Coming Home,Fire and Ice are masterpieces of melodic rock, like they say If you don´t like it...

If you wanted to criticise this album, then you could say that the lyrics to 'Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)' are a little basic, but that's all. I was then going to pick out my favourite tracks, but then I realised there isn't one I don't like. The whole album is superb and remains in my personal top ten to this day. Sweet.

Great follower of Night Songs but not as consistent as the mentioned one...in fact this is the 2nd album of a must have trilogy of the band (Night Songs",Long Cold Winter" & "Heartbreak Station")...fave tracks are 4 in a row "Bad Seamstress Blues","Fallin' Apart At The Seams","Gypsy Road" & the beautiful "Don't Know What You Got(Till It's Gone)"..."The Last Mile" & "Long Cold Winter" are also goodie ones...get it!.92/100

Just awesome, no other words need to be said! Top notch 80's hard rock with a dash of blues. I love Night Songs(90%), but this one, holy shit this is good stuff!!!(98%). To me there really is no such thing as 100%. Even if I do like 10 for 10 on a cd(in which I do on a lot)I don't LOVE all of them, this is just my on opinion. This is very close! I like ever song here, but there is one here I could do without(just like ever cd that I own). I highly recommend!

Despite that Tom's singing is not precisely my preference, he is still skilled, and I respect his songwriting abilities. The four singles on LCW are all winners. Again 3 million copies sold, stunning. Why Andy Johns chose to replace Fred on the recording (the drum duties were shared by Cozy Powell and Denny Carmassi I read), I don't get. Fred seemed to play good live and his drumming on Heartbreak Station is just as fine. Similarly to the debut, here I dislike the mix, the rhythm section does not have a clear/crisp sound, that I think the later albums HS and SC have. It's a matter of taste, but I accordingly think the album could have been even better. Still good compositions!

I've been listening to this one quite a bit the last week or so. My feeling is still that the singles still overshadow the other songs to a high degree. Taken separately, "Second Wind," "Fire And Ice" and "Take Me Back" reveal their pleasures, and are fine songs, but they tend to be dwarfed by the likes of "Gypsy Road" and "The Last Mile." And the title track—give them credit, because few bands of the type would have attempted an organ-drenched, pure-blues song in 1988. Night Songs is a more immediate listen, but Long Cold Winter has more depth to it than just a pure party record. I love 'em both, but for different reasons.

This album came out of nowhere. Night Songs is a great hard rock album but didn't prepare me for the blooze drenched attitude that came pouring out of my speakers when I cranked this sucker up. Absolute classic!
