The debut had it's moments, but IMHO was overrated by just about everybody. This 2nd album is the most complete AOR album I've heard in about 15 years. The songwriting is better, the songs have more texture and variety, and Hitchcock is a man possessed on some of these tunes. This album is also more AOR than the MHR debut. Nobody can tell me that tunes like 'Letter to the Future' or 'The Courage..' wouldn't fit comfortably on any Survivor/Styx album from their heyday. An AOR masterclass. 10/10.

Spot on TIM, I always thought the debut was overrated big time (especially by certain parties), don't get me wrong it was a great release, but there was just something about it. Now this new one is the dogs nuts as far as i am concerned. The tracks are much more memorable than the debut and the ballads are aaaamazing, just check out 'Back To Camelot' and 'Light From A Distant Shore' for proof. Now the band HAVE released an album we can justifiably all rave about. Keep the comments flooding in.

It`s just a classic!!!! I have heard it 7 times, and definitely i think it's better than their fantastic debut album. Jim's songs are amazing and Toby sings better (he has improved a lot in only one year!!!!). The production is also fantastic! 10/10 Euskal Herria Askatu!

A great 2nd effort from Pride Of Lions, definitely better than the debut, much more consistent, better production and songwriting. Toby shines big time, the ballads are simply great, the up-tempo songs are great AOR anthems. And the last 2 songs, OMG, the 2 greatest AOR songs of the year IMO. Essential...

An emotional powerhouse, especially the grand finale, 'The Gift of Song'. After that, you just want to get on your feet and start clapping. But it's the whole album that deserves a standing ovation. 'The Courage to Love Somebody' is the best thing Jim Peterik's done since his Survivor days. 'Letters to the Future' lifts a keyboard idea from 'Rebel Son': vintage Survivor all the way. This release is an instant classic with too many highlights for a 500 character space. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

INCREIBLE!!!! por Dios. Cuanta belleza. GRACIAS.

I bought this on the strengh of the write ups saying it is better than the debut-IT ISN'T is is as boring and tepid as the first!! Peterik should just reform Survivor and forget the self imitation-Overrated and ordinary.

wow, now this is a classic!!!! It took me a while to get this one, mainly cause the Mecca did not blow me away?? This is just great Aor/pomp, great aor songs such as Courage, Parralel, Born, Letter, What Kind of Fool, and great pompy stuff as Light and Gift of Song. The only thing that gets me is the rpoduction is not top notch, but the songs are the best!!! This is an album of greatness!!!

For those who can get the jap version with a bonus, do it! Cause is as great as the album. For the rest... what can I say? I couldn't agree more with almost everybody up here. GET IT! By the way, I think there is indeed a similarity with Mecca, not the same, but certainly some lines match.

Wow - THIS is the definition of AOR. Huge hooks , killer vocals and consistently amazing songwriting. Bands like this are why HH exists. PERFECT ALBUM. It doesn't get much better. If you don't like this then why do you come to this site? 10 out of 10 - undeniable.

I still prefer their first album. 'Madness of Love' and 'Sound of Home' are better than any song on 'Destiny Stone'. Both albums are essential purchases though.

Gave this a chance although I didn't enjoy the first release ... can't say I've changed my opinion...dull dull desperately dull. What was the quote... If a thousand monkeys had a typewriters eventually one of them would write a masterpiece? This is the sonic equivalent - except someone broke the monkeys fingers. BUT it's only what I get out of it, loads of people seem to like it so buy it and make your own mind up.

Monkeys ? ! Boy, poor Nick C, do you know the difference between a good and a bad record ? ! This is bad IYO, and Riff Raff's 'Vinyl Futures' a classic ? ! Should we really take that serious ????????? Oh boy !!!!! Many see this as one of the very best AOR records of 2004 and that's completely RIGHT !!!

As Nick C has just said, loads like it (and quite a few don't aswell i can assure you),he doesn't - fair play. Doesn't need you telling him he is wrong. I like this alot aswell, but can also appreciate why someone may not like it, as it isn't exactly breaking any new ground in the originality stakes is it!!!!

Hi Freaky! Many do see it as a classic .. yes! But I'm not one, sorry! Plus yes I do think Vinyl Futures is a superb album. For me it's a great blend of melodic pop rock. Again I suppose it has dated a bit but I still love it as much now as I did when it came out. Apologies if I offend !!

my view again on this one, just great, great songs, super vocals but bthe production leaves me a lottle unwhelmed, such a shame cause the album is a killer, definately in my 10 of 04 releases, and much stronger than the debut in my eyes

From: AOR freaky |

Fair enough, Nick C ! I'm not telling you what to like, sure not, but I didn't understand your passion for an average disc like that from Riff Raff ! But everyone of us has some of those strange feelings for some records, others don't like at all ! And yes, I have to agree that the production on the new POL could have been a bit better, but that's the case for most Frontiers records these days ! They should give their releases a better production or they will lose credibility ! A pity !
|
From: Nick C |
Date: April 8, 2005 at 9:25 |
I agree with you there Freaky with regards the standard of stuff coming out on Frontiers. Early on in the labels history you could practically rely on a great release without hearing it. I think the problem now is that they are putting out practically any band they can sign up that they consider to be AOR and releasing an album by them. It does the genre no favours at all releasing sub-standard music. I think the problem is that they are not a huge label and can only work to their budgets.
|
From: Nick C |
Date: April 8, 2005 at 9:29 |
(cont..) I think the production on POL releases is better by far than say The Sign releases from the same label though. The thing about POL is that they have good songs and that outshines the production values... whereas some bands on Frontiers have neither good songs or production. Anyway all the best to POL they can only be applauded for what they do in the current musical climate ... they just don't light my fire. Your devotion to their cause is commendable! See ya!

Agreed re the production - I said the first album needed a bigger sound and preferably a better guitarist. A rhythm section worthy of the songs would push this to new levels. In the end the strong songs and Toby's voice are enough to make it less of an issue. I think the best songs on the 1st album were catchier but this may be the better overall effort. And yeah..........the last 1-2 mins of The Gift Of Song are worth the price of admission on their own. Awesome stuff from Toby . Brent

Surely a very good album... but not event close to the terrific pure AOR masterpiece "Pride of Lions". This is not classic AOR by any means it has some pomp and prog rock elements. I prefer the first one but that doesn't mean that this is a bad album or something like that. Jim Peterik can't go wrong. Too bad he is not participating on the new Survivor album. But I trust Jimi and Frankie... Up the Survivors!!!

The Courage To Love Somebody, Parallel Lines, Falling Back To Then, Man Behind The Mask Imprescindible 9.5/10.

Maybe I am imbecile but this sounds lihe the others, nothin'else.Great up-tempo melodick rock/aor but all the 3 albums sounds similar, some songs are really identical.Jim Peterik and Survivor were great but I think it's also time to do somethin'different...The ballad "Back To Camelot" is really good!

For me this album is a bit less consistent than the debut one but still offers great songs composed by the very talented Peterik and with the very vocally skilled Hitchcock ..."The Courage To Love Somebody","Parallel Lines","Born To Believe In You","What Kind Of Fool"(favourite of mine),"The Destiny Stone"(with a great acoustic guitar execution)& "The Gift Of Song"(nice lyrics) are the ones that caught my attention...91/100

Quite a few steps backwards compared to their excellent debut album. The songwriting quality is somewhat lacking, and too much space is given to the all too theatrical style of singing of Toby Hitchcock. A disappointing folluw-up, the only song that lives up to the expectations of the first album is What kind of fool.
