In latin,'Dio' is god;as he is in my world.I remember the first time i heard 'rainbow in the dark' on my local radio station. It took me to another realm of magical proportions, which can only be measured by his mystical lyrics.Tracks like 'don't talk to strangers','holy diver','stand up & shout',& 'caught in the middle',are just a taste of what is to become one of many masterpieces in a long & illustrious career.Truly an icon, who still possesses 'the voice of metal',& remains my eternal idol.

From: Rob Date: October 10, 2001 at 10:48
Still Dio's best work.

From: Harvey Date: November 16, 2001 at 8:14
Only in the land of dead-head metal could a small man, with a woman's hair cut and sporting the most ridiculous trousers since the 3 musketeers, triumph. Vivian Campbell is a good guitarist ,though.

From: Scott Date: February 26, 2002 at 21:23
Are you kidding me?...This CD is a must for 80's metal fans...Dio was 2nd to none in concert in the 80's...What a show and the band wales... Also, Try him in Heaven & Hell from Black Sabbath, one the best metal CD's of all time!

From: JOURNEY Date: May 24, 2002 at 13:01
YEAH!! BUT ALSO ' MOB RULES' IS VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY WONDERFUL!!!!

From: Desslar Date: May 28, 2002 at 16:00
Fantastic metal album with so many strong tracks it's hard to pick a favorite. Love the way the Holy Diver intro kicks in.

From: RichieRocker Date: May 31, 2002 at 21:13
Dio's best album bar none. I love gypsy its my favorite song, and Rainbow in the Dark speaks for itself, this album is a must for any rock fan, also Straight through The Heart is an awesome song, hell every song kicks ass. Also check out Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules from His Black Sabbath days, they totally rock. Until then people keep rockin!!!

From: oldyett Date: June 18, 2002 at 23:43
the essential hard rock/heavy metal release of 1983 bar none! this was just a monster from beginning to end===vivian campbell, what a find and incredible guitarist back before the day when everyone played like this---a must have for any true hard rock fan!!!

From: RichieRocker Date: June 22, 2002 at 12:13
An old co-worker told me about this album, He couldnt stop praising it and he kept marveling out Vivian Campbells axework. I decided to pick it up and I was glad I did. I love all the songs and I was very impressed, This is my favorite Dio album, Hands Down. I would label this album a 'Must Have' for any rock fan.

From: Rockforever Date: July 22, 2002 at 10:50
Fantastic debut from Dio.Ronnie is without doubt one of hard rock's most gifted singers, with an amazing range. The rest of the band are just as impressive. Viv Campbell's abilities are shown to great effect (easy to see why he was later in demand from Whitesnake and Def Leppard). The only downsides are the sometimes excessively fantasy lyrics (dont focus on lyrics, just listen to the music),and of course the cheesy and amateurish keyboards on Rainbow in the Dark. Overall an excellent album.

Rainbow in the dark, legendario tema de puro hard and heavy. Una de las mas grandes voces...

From: 9 CHAMPIONS A 1 Date: November 13, 2002 at 4:12

From: Alejandro Date: May 8, 2003 at 18:15

From: ace Date: June 8, 2003 at 23:46
simply put,DIO ROCKS. this was his masterpiece, with last in line following close behind. the combination of haunting keyboards and crunching guitars are being coppied quite a bit these days. one word CLASSIC. by the way if you are into dio type vocals check out hammerfall a newer band that simply rocks.UP THE IRONS MATE.

From: Gar Date: June 14, 2003 at 17:31
Solid debut. Better than SABBATH's 'Mob Rules' and on par with the classic 'Heaven and Hell'. DIO could do no wrong in the 80's. All his releases from the era are worth getting.

rainbow in the dark is simply one of the best metal songs in the world.vivian campbell shreds throughout this disc.holy diver is a powerful cd and i recommend it to metalheads around the world.dont talk to strangers rocks too.

From: Fat Freddy Date: January 2, 2004 at 10:59
If you don't own this CD you have no right to call yourself a metalhead. In fact, you have no right to call yourself a rock fan. RJD rules.

From: Metal T Date: June 8, 2004 at 17:08
A Classic all the way !---RJD has a work ethic better than 900f most younger bands out there.Touring the world, delivering the goods night after night. In his fifties he still has the pipes and can put alot of singers to shame.Small, but a giant--A true living legend.--

From: Blue Tequila Date: June 9, 2004 at 3:32
I figured Dio was in somewhere in his late fifties also so it got me wondering just how old. He's pretty secretive about his age but it's known that he started his first band in 1957 (as the Vegas Kings). A couple sites say he was born July 10, 1949. This would have made him the ripe old age of 8 when he started his band. I did find another page that said he would be celebrating his 60th birthday in 2002. That would mean he was born in 1942 (seems realistic) and would now be 62 years young!

From: Metal T Date: June 9, 2004 at 20:36
Well, B'Tequila if its true that he might be in his 60's---That just makes what he does that more amazing .Listening as far back as the old ELF stuff, and hearing him now--The quality of his vocals are still there .Pretty d*mn killer ! No matter how old,ya think .

From: Blue Tequila Date: June 9, 2004 at 23:56
Couldn't agree more, Metal T!

From: Metal Pete Date: June 10, 2004 at 16:58
Couldn't agree more, Dio is one of my all-time favorites. Wish I could praise Vivian a little bit, but he denounced his Dio days publicly and now plays sissy rhythm guitar in some boy band called Ded Leprosy.

Admit it everyone, Dio is THE metal singer of the late 70's and early 80's. This continues the strong work from his previous two bands. Almost any song could go down as a metal classic. 10/10

From: Uusiolli Date: August 3, 2004 at 6:14
This album is on my top 10 albums ever. I remember when I bought it I was wondering wht it will be like. Stand Up and Shout started and a tear of happiness appeared. Dio is THE VOICE and he's work in Rainbow and Black Sabbath was awesome. He's also a true entertainer who respects his audience. LONG LIVE RJD. 10/10

From: jack Date: October 25, 2004 at 5:55
This album is perhaps the best early 80's heavy metal album along with maiden's number of the beast, priest's british steel, saxon's denim and leather and anthrax's fistful of metal. Every songs in this album kickass but my favourites are holy diver, rainbow in the dark and gypsy. The lyricson this album are mystical more like power metal(helloween or blind guardian). Sounds like a cross between rainbow and black sabbath. Ronnie james dio's voice is still fantastic after all thsi years.

From: jack Date: October 25, 2004 at 5:59
What makes this album such a master piece is that dio bought the black sabbath's mystical lyrics and rainbow's rock'n'roll with him and fuse it with a finer sense of melody to this album. Rating:10/10

From: Rick/Holland Date: November 1, 2004 at 6:03
Awesome Album!!!! Best tracks: Don't talk to strangers (KILLER SONG) Holy diver Rainbow in the dark

Only one word: CLASSIC!!! Enough said!

From: Propane Date: December 2, 2004 at 17:08
Mind blowing wizardry. This was when Viv was still great. Def Lep ruined him. If you want to catch him before bubble gum ruined him, check this one out. Extremely solid musicianship abound mightily here!

From: Metalhead Date: January 31, 2005 at 23:21
Just watched a DIO Concert VHS today and was totally blown by Viv's amazing talent. I've watched other guitar greats in concerts like Hammett, Satch, Vai, Halen, Jake E. Lee, J. Perry, etc. either live or through concert vids but Viv Campbell is the one that really amazed me. Not saying that his playing was better than Satch, or Van Halen or Vai BUT! he really made my jaw dropped.

From: Date: March 13, 2005 at 20:54
this is the best dio'aaaaaa album, FuckerS!!!!!!!!!!!

From: MIGUEL GUNS Date: April 5, 2005 at 16:25
PARA MI ES UN CLASICO.

From: Swriter Date: April 5, 2005 at 17:04
For 80's metal, hands down, call in the doctor, no doubt number 1 80's metal release, man!!!!!!! still good to this day!!!!! still gives me the chills, just wish it would be finally given a decent remaster with some bonus tracks, a metal masterpiece!!!

From: Lennie Date: April 6, 2005 at 7:04
Agree with swriter, although his 2 releases with Black Sabbath are pretty amazing too! Yeah a remaster, that would be awesome. 'Rainbow in the Dark' sounds sooo bloody tinny here - doh! Sounds more basey on 'Last in Live' but the songs arent quite as tight as on the originals. Essential purchase though for all fans of 80's metal.

From: Rockhead Date: April 6, 2005 at 11:01
The Dio back catalogue has been remastered for the Japanese market. I have a copy of this title and it sounds great!!

From: Joan Date: April 10, 2005 at 6:03
Un clásico, igual que los tres siguientes. Don't talk to strangers!

From: RattnRoll Date: May 21, 2005 at 2:41
THE BEST METAL RELEASE EVER! Seriously this is the kind of album that makes Maiden's " number of the beast" and Metallica's "Master of Puppets" look second rate. It seriously doesnt get any better than this. This also explains why every other DIO album gets compared to this and fails. How fair is it to remind an athlete of his personal record after every race...

From: swriter Date: August 23, 2005 at 13:20
wowow, just read there is a new remaster coming and deluxe booklet on Holy Diver in September!!!! can't wait to hear this one!!!!! Dio is also touring for the album and playing the enture album!!!

From: Lennie Date: August 24, 2005 at 7:50
'The best metal release ever'?? I dont think so, not even the best metal release with RJD singing..that goes to 'Heaven and Hell' in his Black Sabbath days! This does however contain 2 monster rock tracks in 'Rainbow in the Dark' and 'Dont Talk to Strangers' and it will be great to hear these re-mastered and not sounding like they are being played inside a baked bean tin...........

From: swriter Date: August 24, 2005 at 22:21
well I normally do not dispute much, but yes, in my opinion, Holy Diver is the best METAL release from the 80's, not ever!!!!, not best aor, not best hard rock, just the best metal release of the 80's!!!! (in my opinion) The lyrics, music and vibe is totally metal, although I was reading that Dio said he would love to go back and add things here and there on the remaster, but he knows he can't!!!! hehehe This was early 80's and kind of set the mood for the decade for me, this has a special place

From: AOR freaky Date: August 25, 2005 at 4:50
This is superb, but I don't rate it as metal, more as straight ahead hard rock ! Anyway, a fantastic release, but beaten by Y&T's 'Earthshaker' for miles. And even the first Coney Hatch I like a bit more, but no doubt : THIS IS PURE CLASS !!!!!

From: swriter Date: August 25, 2005 at 11:04
ok, all i do, is list my opinion and then two people tell me that it is not the best metal album. who cares, it is mine!!!!!!!!!! hahaha why do we all need to compare something, I didn't, I just said this was my fav metal release, jeez, just enjoy the music!!!!!!!!!!!

From: PAUL Date: August 25, 2005 at 12:28
YOU'RE RIGHT AOR FREAKY.THIS ALBUM IS MORE HARD ROCK THAN HEAVY METAL AND NOT DIO'S BEST WORK AS MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE,AND OF COURSE NOT BETTER THAN Y&T!GO TO THE PAST AND CHECK RAINBOW'S RISING(RAINBOW) AND HEAVEN AND HELL (BLACK SABBATH)AND YOU'LL UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN.I LOVE THIS RELEASE,BUT I PREFER MUCH MORE HIS NEXT WORKS CAUSE THERE ARE MORE KEYS THERE."ONE NIGHT IN THE CITY" AND "ROCK N ROLL CHILDREN" ARE HARD ROCK ANTHEMS!

From: Rycheage Date: August 25, 2005 at 12:46
This is some of Dio's best work lyrically and vocally. The musicianship is extremely tight and definitely Vivian Campbell's best work. The album flows from beginning to end nad there is not a weak song on the album. Excellent stuff and IMO better than Y & T's "Earthshaker". It just seems to flow better from start to finish.

From: AOR freaky Date: August 25, 2005 at 13:31
We still love you, swriter ! And Rycheage : I respect your opinion a lot, always did, but this time you're so wrong : Y&T's Eearthshaker is so much better than anything Dio did, and hell, I like Dio a lot ! Paul, you're right man. Rainbow's Rising is also a lot better, as is Montrose and Sabbath's Heaven And Hell ! And I still didn't mention my all-time faves Legs Diamond. From another planet !!! Best mate. And you, we should share a room together ! HA ! HA ! It's nice here, a pity of Jez !!

Wow, I can't believe I never commented on this slab of genius. For me, Dio on this release and the next, influenced my musical tastes and my playing style possibly more than anything else that came out in the 80's. Although it springs from hard rock roots, I'd definitely classify this as metal, at least at the time it was released. I mean come on, that's where the whole "devil's horns" thing came from, what could be more metal than that? Viv's playing is pure emotion and kicks f'n ass on this!

From: RED HAMER Date: August 26, 2005 at 4:54
BLUE CHARVEL, IT IS GOOD TO SEE SOMEONE WHO IS SO RIGHT ON THE MONEY AS YOU ALWAYS ARE. IT IS RARE TO FIND SOMEONE I AGREE WITH ALMOST AS MUCH AS PAUL SEEMS TO AGREE WITH AOR FREAKY. YOUR OPINION IS LAW, FOR SURE NO ONE CAN ARGUE WITH SUCH A LOGICAL STATEMENT.

10/10 Si, Don´t talk to strangers!!

There's really not much to add that hasn't been said here already. This is such a CLASSIC and arguebly the best stuff DIO has realeased. Equally one of the best hard rock albums of all time obviously. The vocal lines and Viv's guitar playing is extremely effective and infectious and the song material is hard to match. The only track I quite not like is "Shame On The Night"...the rest is top notch all the way. In my top ten of classic hard rock albums!

From: CS2007 Date: October 9, 2007 at 16:40
Dio begins his solo career the best way possible with this album. Top notch 80s metal from start to finish. No metal collection should be wihtout it.

This album is the story of my life. I can't even begin to explain my deep connection with it and how much I was influenced by this guy. It was, is and always will be my #1 album of all time and I first heard it nearly 20 years ago. The voice, the shreds (oh Vivian, how the mighty has fallen), this never gets old! A flat-out masterpiece. \m/RJD\m/
