Put it this way this is better than any CD he made with Warrant. There is not one poor song. It is excellent. Get it!

Jani is one of my favourite vocalists & song writers despite his attitude. Forget all the talk about his weight, his hair & his poor behaviour & buy this CD as its great stuff. Try to get the European version listed here as it has three more trax than the US version!

He's BACK!! did he ever leave?? How can you not love anything this man does?? I'm a drummer (profesional) with no other musical talent. Not the case with Jani... Hey buddy...I grew up with you and now my kids listen to you..Like it or not they listen. This album makes them want to listen!! GO BACK TO WARRANT. BEG IF YOU HAVE TOO!

From: Rycheage Date: April 4, 2004 at 21:40
'Nothing' and the raucous title track are similarly melodic slices of modern, nu-breed rock. The dark sounding 'How A Girl' and the groovy 'Hooked' vary the pace and feel of the album impressively, and 'Twilight' is an excellent ballad with a contemporary twist. There's no doubt 'Back Down To One' is a real triumph for Jani Lane.

From: vandervelde Date: April 13, 2004 at 8:05
Wow...normally i hate this modern, nu-breed albums, but this is really excellent.Jani Lane is here in great shape. His voice sounds exactly the same like in early Warrant years. For fans of Warrant this a must!!!

Jani's voices fairs up pretty well in 2003, alot better than most another washed up 80's rockers. The production is good aswell. But this release realy isn't for me at all, very modern sounding. Very similar in sound to The Marvellous 3.

From: kevin Date: July 19, 2004 at 7:14
this release is just jani lane trying to be modern,PERIOD.like it or not,Lane has always been a good singer and songwriter. Its the artists perogative if he wants to try and stay within the current trends. The songs are good,i just happen to prefer him with Warrant. He still couldve stayed true to his rock roots and made a great album.I give it a B-

I bought this before reading any of the comments/review on it. Big mistake. I agree, if he wants to go off and do his own thing it's fine. Doesn't mean I have to like it, and indeed I don't. I still think he writes good songs, even on the abysmal "Ultraphobic" he did that, but I need a hook or a melody to cling on to in order that a song sticks in my head. Granted this is better than Warrant have been for some time, but that aint saying much. 4/10.

From: Warhead Date: August 23, 2004 at 10:39
It's power pop rock. Don't expect an all out full frontal Cherry Pie style, because it's not. However, the disc carries catchy melodies, poppy guitar riffs, some witty lyrics (along with some of his most childish lyrics, shame on Lane), and an all around good vibe to it. His unreleased (bootleg) of other solo tunes under the title Jabberwocky is incredible...in the vein of Elton John, Melloncamp, 54Fighting, etc. If you can find that, pick it up. Jani deserves praises for it.

This CD is everything I hoped for, and more. I have loved everything Jani has written, and could only hope his solo album would compare with the talent he had shown with Warrant. He never disappoints. My sister has been stuck on "Uncle Tom's Cabin", and "Cherry Pie", and not much else. She can't help but sing along to this new CD!! From a die hard fan, to somewhat of a fan, we both love every song!!! Way to go, Jani. Thanks for keeping us going with more and more. XOXOXO imapatriette@yahoo.com

Although we all know Jani Lane can write much better songs than this, I do like his go at simple modern rock. Very catchy, snappy and well done. A great collection of songs and another thumbs up for Jani Lane.

Just got back from opening for Jani and his band in Fenton,MO. This band is tight and full of rockin fun! They blasted out some Warrent songs,a highlight being,a very ballsy version of Uncle Tom's Cabin. They also shined greatly on the new songs. They came packed with all the FUN that rock is supposed to be about. Something that a lot of people seem to forget. This was most evident during the shows final song,on a killer rendition of the Blackfoot rocker,Train,Train. Great time was had by all.

From: Chad Date: December 22, 2004 at 20:51
Funny is a good tune. I like Jani as a frontman as he knows what it is like to have fun. Met him in Fargo ND and he was more than cordial. Very cool guy. I wish him the best. I hope he sticks to the Warrant vein along the lines of Uncle Tom's Cabin and the Dog Eat Dog album. Not sure if this is worth picking up or not but Jani can certainly sing although if you are expecting Warrant caliber rock, this is not. At least not the entire album....

From: CurtisLoew Date: January 21, 2005 at 10:54
Who would've guessed that Bret Michaels would have released a better solo record than Jani Lane? I sorta like "Better Than You" and parts of some other tunes; but where's the "great songwriting" everybody's talking about? At some points, it sounds like he's trying to sound like Joe Jackson... and at all points, I'm disappointed. I can't believe I paid full price for this.

From: zinatra99gt Date: February 18, 2005 at 18:25
I am sorry. I tried to like this cd, but every track I played just kept getting further and further off the road. I like and respect Jani a lot, but this album really isnt' cutting it. If this album had the same sound as maybe Bon Jovi's bounce or Def Leppards X, then I think it would be cool. He still has the voice though that everyone knew and loved when he was in Warrant. Which speaking of Warrant....I never cared about the Heaven song. I preferred Sad Teresa, myself....but thats me.

From: z4roxx Date: December 11, 2006 at 12:59
Very good modern hard rock release.not a big quantity of ideas but all the songs are interesting and catchy.Imagine a production ala Warrant with a modern approach, good the Jane’s vox!

From: Rob Rocker Date: January 30, 2007 at 10:54
Jani Lane being not only one of the best song writers from the 80's but of all time, I was really disapointed with this C.D. The songs are weak and contrived. This is not Jani Lane trying his hand at modern pop rock, it's Jani trying to be Butch Walker. He didn't need to change his song writing style to achieve a "modern" rock sound, that could have been accomplished through production. He still could be a relevant artist today if he could come to terms with himself and be comfortable in his own

From: dafoe21 Date: May 11, 2007 at 21:28
The best songs on the disc are Better Than You and 6 Feet Under.

From: erik Date: April 30, 2009 at 15:52
pfhhhh nope not for me. Very modern rock. Like a zillion others out there. This is not what can make him stand ou in the crowd. On the contrary. Blends in with the other modern cr..

From: metalmaniac777 Date: January 15, 2011 at 11:36
Jani puts his great voice to use singing a bunch of modern nu-breed rock tunes and while it's a long way from Warrant levels, it's pretty darn good stuff for the power-pop genre. This time around, Jani is cruising down the same snappy lane that Marvelous 3 and 40 Ft. Ringo tend to inhabit, meaning hooks that might be on the simple side yet are undeniably infectious. That said, there's nothing on here that's so good you're going to forget his glory days in Warrant. It's like getting a hummer from one girl followed by a kiss from another...both good, but you'll want to take the first girl out on a date more often than the second. Now, naughty metaphors aside, if you're a fan of nu-breed rock, then "Back Down to One" is one CD worth picking up.

whoever loves his voice and songwriting will pick this one!i d say it s very simple, straight, rock music with the unique way Jani has to write good and catchy tunes ,BUT i d prefer a more hard rockin sound like he did back in the day !overall is pleasant but it has some fillers .only for fans

From: Doug Date: December 4, 2015 at 12:20
Just picked this up. Not great, but certainly not bad. I give it a "70." RIP, J.L.
