I wore my cassette out. I loved this cd when i was younger now wish i had it on cd. She has some really great vocals on this album. I can't believe it got shelved for years before being released.

Great singer, great album. 'Black Velvet' everyone knows, but there is much more to this than that one song, 'Kickstart My Heart' being one example of the rockier material, while 'Lover Of Mine' demonstrates the softer side with a sublime ballad. Personally, I would rate this debut up there with the likes of Chrissy Steele, Darby Mills & Lee Aaron's s/t as my fave female Canuck releases and that is saying something.

From: Dave Stamos Date: May 2, 2005 at 5:57

This disc rocks surprisingly hard in places, like "Still Got This Thing," "Rock This Joint" "Kick Start My Heart" (I believe this album came out several months before Dr. Feelgood, incidentally). The high-dollar '80's production smooths off the rough edges though, and you get a sound that reminds me of something like Robert Palmer's "Addicted To Love," if you know what I mean. Big and boomy and loud on the surface, but still lite enough for non-bangers. There are a few Diane Warren-sounding ballads for Mom and her friends; "Lover Of Mine" was the third single and oddly went nowhere. Alannah had a cool, bluesy voice with a bit of a rasp, and hey! She sang naked in the studio—my kinda girl! "Black Velvet" was the big hit of course, and it lives on via adult-contemporary radio in the States. My sister worked in a hair-salon in the early 2000's that kept the local soft-rock station on all day, and they still played that song all the time, which only made her hate it more. Anyway, the album

... is better than Cher's from the same year, and easily as good as Heart's Brigade record. Which doesn't make it at all essential in my book, but for what it is, it's more than decent.

"Doghouse" from your comment, it got me to listening to this album the last few days, really good, IMO way better than Cher. Agree, it has a more Heart feel to it. I also hear a bit of Chrissy Steele, too. Good album!
