Classic 80's Brit aor featuring the mighty Chris Ousey on vocals and Jason Bonham on drums and a smooth production by Queens Roger Taylor. Finally issued on cd for the first time.Loved this album when it first came out and still love it to this day.10 brilliant songs and not one filler, which is a rarity in itself thesedays.Top tracks for me are 'Make It Tonight' 'Livin' On A Knife Edge' and the mega 'Goodbye Don't Mean Forever'.If you don't yet have this add it to the top of your want list now.

Modelling their style on the likes of US heroes Foreigner and Bad Company, Virginia Wolf's strengths lay in well developed songwriting capabilities. Without doubt it contains some classic moments. Tell me that 'Living On A Knife Edge' is one of the best AOR songs ever to come out of the UK during the eighties? You can tack on 'Only Love', with a superb bridge and chorus section, with some memorable lead-in lyrics. 'For All We Know' is another pitch at pure AOR.

I agree, Rycheage, both Virginia Wolf are underrated by most. I even think a lot of the guys on this side don't know them (like they don't know a lot of other goodies). A pity ! Most conversations are on wellknown acts as Tesla, Guns and Roses, Crue etc., while they are mostly (certainly not recently) are not offering the most exciting stuff !

Two parts ERIC MARTIN - SUCKER FOR A PRETTY FACE; One part KING KOBRA - THRILL OF A LIFETIME; A dash of SURVIVOR - VITAL SIGNS, and a sprinkle of STATETROOPER... Bake at 325 for 45 minutes and there you have it: VIRGINIA WOLF.

Great AOR. I actually really got into these two Virginia Wolf CDs upon thier re-releases. Very good CD!

Living On A Knife Edge, Make It Tonight and Playing With Fire are classics. Any fan of the Heartland debut album will love this, as all the elements are there and with a rawer, more guitar orientated feel. Classic.

From: rocky Date: February 6, 2005 at 10:56
this is pretty good stuff----pre HEARTLAND---absolutely worth having for all serious melodic rock fans

From: Rocker76 Date: February 21, 2005 at 10:08
I appear to be in the minority because I wasn't impressed at all with Virginia Wolf. Aside from 'Are We Playing With Fire' and 'Livin' On A Knife Edge,' the album was very forgettable and dull. But I really enjoyed those 2 songs and they were very good AOR. But as a whole, the album was just not inspiring for me.

From: MSL Date: April 9, 2005 at 15:33
How about a quick mention for Nick Bold - guitar player who wrote every song on this great release. It's the tremndous Chris Ousey that catches the ear, but what a set of songs we got !

From: Scandinavia Date: April 24, 2005 at 14:00
Rocker76: You're dead-on there!! I feel the same way 'bout this album...A bit dull overall...They certainly lack balls on most tracks except the 2 you mentioned... But as a 'standard' 80s AOR album it's good...

From: voorhees Date: August 8, 2005 at 13:24
I've heard some samples of this a while back but never a whole song. Is this pretty much on par with Bonham's stuff with Airrace?

From: PAUL Date: December 26, 2005 at 14:50
I can't agree more with the above comments. Great debut album from a great British AOR band with a great singer! Mr.Ousey has indeed a golden voice and songs like 'livin'on a knife edge' are timeless! If you like this one try some HEARTLAND gems (espec. the first!) you'll love them...Merry Christmas!

An 80's AOR gem with shining vocals. AOR/melodic fans will not be disappointed. Still sounding good today.

From: caritosmatanza Date: January 26, 2006 at 21:56
One of my time ever favs. Tremendous aor with perfect mix of guitars and keyboards and a really sensible voice. If u don´t know Virginia Wolf, you don´t know how cool could aor be.

100 no fillers ! Pure class album which contains one of the most perfect AOR song ever made : 'Livin' On A Knife Edge'. A real gem. Chris Ousey is imperial (as always). This album is a must have for all the 80's AOR lovers.

From: george_the_jack Date: May 3, 2008 at 10:31
What a H U G E vocalist !!! Chris could comfortably stay beside David Coverdale and Ian Gillan but..this is life....A monument album far away from being just a classic!

From: george_the_jack Date: May 4, 2008 at 9:16
Someone could say Chris' voice seems to be unstoppable! Listening to ''playing with fire'' you have the impression that your speakers cannot stand his powerful magical voice! He sounds like Jean Beauvoir in a 'white edition' with a mix of David Coverdale's excellent moments. So, imagine the explosive combination. All the album is a highlight! My favs are the mighty 'playing with fire' and the eternal 'livin on a knife edge' Do everything possible to own this jewel! This is the golden rule on how to play AOR without exaggeration! And smthing about the production....What can I say? Is by far the best mid 80's rock production that i've ever heard kicking ass and even todays still remain one of the best ever....98/100

*Livin' On A Knife Edge* Super Great Song!

From: The SAFIRE Drummer Date: October 27, 2010 at 7:51
I brought this album only because Jason Bonham was playing on this and was blown away by Chris Ouseys voice. There's some super AOR tracks on this CD. Great album.

From: rick kerch vzla Date: May 11, 2011 at 20:41
Good debut by Virginia Wolf even though their second album "Push" is far better than this one IMHO...Chris Ousey started his professional career as a singer in this band that was also comprised by Jonh Bonham's son Jason ...my favourite track is "Goodbye Don't Mean Forever" plus the following ones "Are We Playing With Fire","Make It Tonight","Waiting For Your Love","Livin' On A Knife Edge","For All We Know" & "Take A Chance"...as you can read most of the tracks deserve to be highlights...90/100

From: edwithmj Date: August 16, 2016 at 18:42
A different sound from the more straight AOR sound of Ousey's future band Heartland. The album was harder to get into, sure, but it's definitely grown on me a lot. The album starts off decently with Are We Playing With Fire: a hard rocker which showcases Ousey's talent; my favourite, Make it Tonight, has a slight dark feel to it I think and has a very haunting melody to it; It's in Your Eyes is my next pick and is a very well written semi-ballad; Waiting for Your Love is probably the most commercial song on here and has a great catchy chorus with a keyboard-laden rhythm; Livin' on a Knife Edge is the hardest this album rocks and is probably my second favourite too. For All We Know is another song with a haunting keyboard melody and is another winner, while Goodbye Don't Mean Forever is my final pick - wonderful guitars in this. Chris Ousey never fails to deliver excellent AOR and this is no exception.

what a masterpiece this is!VIRGINIA WOLF achieve perfection with their amazing songwriting and mostly because of Chris Ousey s outstanding vocal performance(one of the best ever heard)!"livin on a knife edge',"goodbye don t mean forever",'for all we know" and "only love' are sensational songs and overall VIRGINIA WOLF s debut a hard rock classic
