First of two swings and misses in a row for the Florida bunch. Yes, "Gutter Ballet" is cool, but the rest is misguided rock opera that often lacks a metal punch. I love Savatage's later efforts, but they needed to lay a few turds before finding their pompus selves. I suspect this one is collecting dust in more than a few metal-child's tape collections, right along side WASP and anything the Scorpions did after Love at First Sting.

I like it. Not as hard of a metal as some of their other stuff, agreed. But, nonetheless, good songs if this type of rock is what you're in the mood for. Still, it has a hard edge to it. Yes, kind of a rock opera/concept type album. But still pretty decent.

This album pretty much began the "split" in the Savatage fan base... on one side you had the old fans who wanted them to stick with the straight-ahead metal material, then on the other side were the people who appreciated their newer, more progressive feel. I personally love all of their albums, and when I saw the band on this tour in 1990 I can honestly say it was THE best concert I ever saw in my life. This one still gets many spins around Camp Fat Freddy.

Right on Freddy - I saw them on the same tour(w/NUCLEAR ASSAULT & TESTAMENT)and totally agree - this was the best live set I have ever witnessed as well. Recording & touring as a 5 piece for the 1st time, the twin guitar punch of Oliva & Caffery, the amazing rhythm section of Middleton & Dr. Killdrums, and Jon playing the white baby grand that rose straight out of the stage were jaw dropping to say the least. Any SAVATAGE release with Jon on vox is top shelf in my book...

It's worth it simply for 'Gutter ballet'. I rate this 10/10, for that song alone.

The BEST album, Gutter Ballet is a masterpiece, the solo is one of the best i've heard from Criss Oliva, really loved that Jon Started using more piano and keyboard on the tage records. When the crowds are gone, summers rain, she's in love, killer tracks, Hounds freaks me out, great tapping by Criss. I would love to sing of rage and war to George Bush jr

From: Adam (Poland) Date: April 9, 2005 at 16:56
For me it's the best Savatage's album... It's great mix of Savatge's power metal and Savatage's rock opera, with little part of pop rock. When The Crowds Are gone is enormous and magnificent. I am in Seventh Heaven when i listen it. I only put Stairway To Heavenn above this song...... John Oliva shows that only he is optimal singer for this band. His voice is very dry but very beauty... For Me 10 /10

This is where the experimentation came in. The orchestra, the concepts/stories,the piano/keys. All the things we'd see in abundance on later albums like "Streets","Dead Winter Dead","Poets & Madmen". But they only really dipped their toe in the water & it's still an easy transition from "Hall.." to tracks like "Of Rage & War". But the title track is an epic & is the real centrepiece here. Slightly less consistent than "Hall.." ("She's In Love" is terrible),but the start of a new era. 8.5/10.

Why a band like Dream Evil is not on the site?If there are Savatage I think you can put also them.I think thr best class power metal band in the last 6 years with the best singer ever heard in metal scene:Niklas Isfeldt breaks with his voice my mind,fantastic!!!3 cds’,3 masterpieces, please put them on the site!

"Gutter Ballet" is a masterpiece: the turning-point of Savatage career, before the Broadway metal sound of the unbelieavable "Streets". The title-track is bombastic, "When The Crowds Are Gone" is one of the best 80's ballad. Compare Dream Evil with Savatage? Please, let's be serious.

Savatage is a killer band no matter what undoubtebly they played in a more mellow and "dramatic" way but still consistent..."Gutter Ballet","When The Crowds Are Gone","She's In Love","The Unholy" & "Mentally Yours" are my favourites...85/100

Gutter Ballet is the bridge between the pure power-metal of the early albums, and the theatrical, ivory-tickling behemoth they became in the '90's. So you have some straight-up rippers like "Of Rage And War" and "She's In Love," and then grandiose ballads like "When The Crowds Are Gone" and "Summer's Rain." Jo Oliva tones down that viper screech in places, but it's always there, lurking just beneath the surface, waiting to be called up at a moment's notice. once songs like "Mentally Yours" take off. Chris and Criss are their usual sharp-riffing, razor-toned selves, and together with the always-tight rhythm section, it makes what might be Savatage's best album of the Jon-sung years, all their many tricks on display.

I'm still trying my best to like this album after all these years but I just can't. Songs are way too operatic and not in a good way - they lack memorable hooks and melodies don't stick throught the album.

From: Doug Date: October 8, 2019 at 23:15
This is currently listed as #77 on the Top 100 Rated CDs on HH. No way I have this on any Top 100. Some good riffs here and there, but the songs are all over the place.

sensational release for the mighty SAVATAGE creating a unique sound that nobody ever came close to it i think!the best thing is that they managed to be pomp, epic and hard edged at the same time without getting lost in long songs and lines !Jon s vocals are thrilling and Criss s guitar work truly outstanding!blessed i bought it when it was out and spinned it in amassive way
