This is the album that made EUROPE known to everyone in the planet. The reason is obvious. The first song 'The Final Countdown' consists the absolute pop-metal anthem of the 80s and still(2001!) circulates in the radio worldwide! But it's not just this;you're struggling actually to find a 'bad' song in the album.Powerful rockers like 'Danger On The Track' and 'On The Loose' are superb. The emotional side like in 'Heart Of Stone' and 'Love Chaser' gives the album balance.Norum's guitar is fantastic.

I liked The Final Countdown and Rock the Night. I am not that crazy about Carrie although many people are. I sure didn't like John Norum when I saw him with Dokken, so I'm hesitant to buy his solo albums.

Why is this rating so low? This album kicks the crap out of 500f the others on this site. Yes, it's a bit lightweight, and the keyboards are a little too prominent, but the songwriting and vocals are still great. After this album they would completely lose it.

This cd is perfect. Powerful vocals, great guitar solos. I love the keyboards that sound so epic. The Final countdown is absolutely one of my favorite songs. Also Ninja, Cherokee and Danger on the track are so full of energy and passion. For me this is for suret heir best album. Prisoners in Paradise was too much influenced by the american taste. This is the second hard rock cd I ever heard (the first was the self titled from Heart).10 is my rate.

I see their are some negative comments above about Europe. Most people don't realize how good of a band they really were. This is not american hard rock. This band is from europe and has that flavor and influence. I remember going to a record store that posted international charts. Europe had a top ten single in almost 6 countries in one single week. Now thats good by any measure. They are more highly regarded in the world than most american hardrock/metal bands of that era.A breakthrough album!

Those cheesey keyboards on The Final Countdown make it seem more apropos to a Rocky Soundtrack than on a supposed rock album. Sorry, Europe fans, but this stuff is terribly wimpy. I had to laugh when an interviewer asked Rick Savage what he though of Joey Tempest, and Savage laughed and referred to him as 'Joey Compost'. I'm in complete agreeance that John Norum was head and shoulders above his bandmates and leaving was the smartest move he ever made.
|
From: TIM |
Date: October 25, 2002 at 15:28 |
IMHO the keys, French Horns, and Tympany Drums added a majestic feel to the Final Countdown that distinguishes it from other songs of that time. I liked about 2 other tracks and the rest I can live without. No offence,I personally don't believe Norum was the only highpoint of the band. I think their main problem was writing consistantly as is the case for many. They definately needed more fire and zest in places.
|
From: TIM |
Date: October 25, 2002 at 15:35 |
I saw Norum live and was not impressed. He sounds good on album though. Of course, that's the case for many artists. Unless it's Boston,Cinderella, Journey, or AC/DC you seldom find an enjoyable live performance that equals or exceeds the album.

Despite being pop-based, this lovely album brings many memories to me. I remember when I first saw them with the song 'Final Countdown' in a music programme on the TV in the December night when entering into the year 1987, around times of first teenager-years. Absolutely impressed by that provoking keyboard intro, the song had became one of the most favourites in my tape-player. As for the album Rock The Night, Carrie, Ninja all blew away that poor player.
|
From: Baris |
Date: November 20, 2002 at 5:39 |
I think the problem confronting them was that they were taking place in pop-mags together with bands like A-HA or Duran Duran rather than rock pages and therefore never taken serious by the rock audience. Later only John Norum somewhat succeeded to get rid of that image in his work with Don Dokken. Nonetheless anything related with these guys still brings a somewhat sneering smile on my face today. I felt awful when I heard the dance-mix of Final Countdown three years ago, should be a nightmare!

'The Final Countdown' is the MASTERPIECE of EUROPE. The Joey's compositions are fantastics and the keys too. It's a shame that John Norum's guitars are not very hard. 'Love Chaser' wasn't a single but is a great song!

@Dean: Children Of Bodom never did a cover of 'The Final Countdown', that's another band, but I don't remember the name. They're from Sweden and they really suck (the band that did the cover). Children Of Bodom are great! They covered 'Hellion' (WASP) and 'Shot In The Dark' (Ozzy) along some other tunes from Slayer, Sepultura or The Ramones. Their own material is also great. Anyway: EUROPE ARE BACK TOGETHER!!! HELL YES!! They're doing a new record right now! European Tour is sheduled for summer!

charvel man,I agree with you..every song is not just good, its great. Like Dokken, they sure know how to blend metal with melody perfectly. I think europe should just stick to what they do best that is playing melodic metal. lots of people think they are glam(poison, cinderella) or sleaze(g'n'r,faster pussycat) but i think they are a hard rock band playing melodic and pop metal music! Anyway, carrie is a wonderful ballad that is both empowering and softening like nobody's fool(CINDERELLA).

I think this is highly over-rated. 'Carrie' and 'Cherokee' are killer, but I can do without the rest of it. The following 2 albums were to be much stronger in terms of songwriting and performances, but as with all successful acts it only took one overly commercial pop tune to make their name and sell the album. The following albums were more consistent, but didnt have a big pop number and didnt sell.

Knuckles - I read what Europe singer Joey Tempest suggested one should do if somebody said their music was for ''make-belive rockers'': ''Play Scream of anger really loud and hand them a beer, that should help.'' You see, they have made heavier albums than The final countdown! Personally I like it but the mixing ain't as good as it could be. I see why Norum left the band, what happened to his amazing guitars? Remeber I'm being nice to U, I use to be really ugly to people insulting Europe...

I prefer the sound they have on this album and the one they have on Wings of Tomorrow. The earlier Europe just sounds too aggressive and muddy for my taste. I like crystal clear production... Anyhow Im not much of a Europe fan, I have a hard time swallowing the scandinaivian sound tho Im Swedish myself. However I love the band 'Treat' tho their singer Robert Ernlund sucks badly. Too bad Joey Tempest isn't singing on their records.

As I said in my words on 'Out of this world', I never really got into Europe until the mighty 'Prisoners in paradise' and this album is no exception. Good AOR, but a lot of keyboards and to be honest I thought there were Scandi acts at the time doing the job better. Still, I love 'Carrie' as a ballad. Beautiful song and a good solid melodic record. Just not my fave.

I was in Switzerland to watch them live on Sunday 22 August and I went on my own cause no-one would get so far to see a band like Europe....so much the worse for them....it was an incredible show,Joey was jumping everywhere on the stage(even too much enthusiast,he stumbled and almost fell!!!)and I was standing on TOP OF THE WORLD....my teenage dream came true,I shook Joey's hand and he signed my OUT OF THIS WORLD CD!!!!!....I spent lots of Swiss francs but 'AN EMOTION HAS NO PRICE' I use to say!

they played the title track from the new album START FROM THE DARK....I love that song and I already know the lyrics by heart...after the first 3 or 4 listenings, it became a classic for me!!!!!....ehhehe.....bass player John Leven while singing backing vocals was surprised to notice that the song was already known by the audience!!!!!....it sounds modern hard rock I think and you can feel Norum's taste in it....only a personal opinion, but if you want you can listen......

The keyboards are what make this album stand out. I never cared much for the guitar playing or the lyrics, but the overall melodies are solid, if not a little same-ish. Some songs find a hook and take off, while others fall a little flat and land on the boring side. My favorite tracks here are Ninja, The Final Countdown, Cherokee, Love Chaser and to a lesser extent, the popular Carrie. Overall, it's consistant in the style, but not the delivery, and could have been better. 7/10

Excellent keyboard driven rock. This is what a hair band is all about. Great musicians, cheesy lyrics and tons of hairspray. 'The Final Countdown' was not a critic's darling. It was panned. But the fans ate it up. The title track, 'Cherokee', 'Rock The Night' and 'Danger On The Track' rock with the best the 80's had to offer. 'Carrie' is a power ballad done with class. This is a must-own staple of 80's hair bands. Great, fun stuff.

This was the first Europe release I bought but mine has a different cover . I love 'The Final Countdown' with it's huge keyboards, it is an anthem. It is just a shame that most of the world only know Europe for that song. No disrespect to Mic Michaeli but I feel they could have turned the keyboards down a bit on the other tracks. I was on holiday in Bulgaria this year and a band did a version of 'Carrie'. It was a beautiful moment!! Just thought I'd share that with you!

One of the worst hard rock album ever,or should i say pop rock. This album is downrightly embarrasing-it's full of cheesy keybord sounding. The guitar solo and riffs are quite heavy and impressive but that all. The final countdown,as good as they are on the billboard or whatever chart,is dreadfully awful. It sounded like an experiment gone totally wrong. How the hell the final countdwon(song) got on the chart is beyond me(maybe it appeals to the mainstream pop/dance fan). They should swap this

Rock the night and danger on the track are allright but love chaser, carrie and heart of stone are downright weak and cheesy. Man,compared them to earlier europe songs like 7 doors hotel and the excellent thrash-like scream of anger, those songs are like arena rock/baby rock. Avoid this album at all cost. If you want their better release, try their debut album,

I wou;dn't say those bands are downrightly embarrasing but the the countdown is a song that is a disgrace to hard rock or metal music. It gave metal a bad name. One of my friend who hate hard rock and metal told me that those genre sucks. He gave me a reason why:the final countdown. He laughed about it for hours and said that hard rock/metal's most famous song sounded like that. But anyway,i won't change my opinion about disliking this record-it sucks! The Final Countdown is probably the greatest anthem in the history of hard rock. It's commercial hard rock so people have to say it sucks. It's a lively song, and who can stand a happy song like that nowadays? Well, everybody!!! But no one can admit it! We're living in the age of 'being cool', and after Cobain's 'I hate myself and I want to die' and Beck's 'I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me' every song must follow that mood. Mtv, major labels and the industry of advertisement are...

If we spend the rest of our lives thinking that what we were (dressed, thought, listened to...) 10 years ago was simply ridiculous, then we'll never rise above the insignificance of our lives among the masses. We have to have our own principles and values and let us not be too much affected by fashion and the tendencies of a majority. THE FIANL COUNTDOWN was a great song and it STILL IS

Hey Glam fan, I guess you know that it's NO heavy metal album but a MELODIC ROCK album (mostly not even hard rock rather AOR). And if your friend has no idea of the different genres in rockmusic, then it's surely not the fault of 'The final countdown'. However, what counts is TASTE (do you ever heard of it??)and the tastes are different of course. The commercial industry CAN'T do anything against that so in the end (after the years) you are free from trends to decide what's yours. ,)

Don't mind comments such as 'poser metal' etc, this is and always will be considered a masterpiece in melodic rock!! Sure it was softer than the two first albums, but so what?! John Norum is still playing his ass off on this cd with lots of fantastic riffs and solos, and the production is tight and well-balanced. Two other highlights of this cd is Joey's fantastic voice and range here, simply world class!! And the songs, wow!!, not a single filler here, all winners. 100/100 on my scale.

It took a little bit to catch on in the states and I admit MTV played Final COuntdown to death. People laugh at the song and make fun of it. Is it really that bad? Nothing left to say about this album I guess.. It's an absolute classic and I don't find it's that whimpy and cliché loaden as many (outside of AOR fans) think of it. Songs 1,2,3,6 & 7 are all highest class in this genre. "Out of this world" comes near. In this album Europe makes a change in direction, shifting from metal to more commercial hard rock/AOR. Although die-hard metallers will dislike it, here Europe managed to make an absolutely spectacular album, with solid and hooky tracks like "Countdown" (incredible guitar solo), "Rock The Night", "Cherokee" and "Danger On The Track". Being a music lover and a fan of this kind of music ask yourself the following question: "Is it great music that's remembered 20+ years down the road, and will it be remembered for the next 30 years to come? The answer is an obvious yes to me. There aren't many albums that reach this status, there aren't a lot of songs that have the anthem status TFC has. The past decade will definitely not have that same impact. In fact, most will be forgotten instantly because they're throwaway products to cash in cheap money for crap. And that's exactly where this record differs. It's the musical art created by musicians that differs from the scam products that get their way on air by payola. Let me put it like this: it doesn't sound like Justin Bieber. It's far superior to that. The songs on here come in different tempos and fall in different categories. TFC is this epic Rock anthem, RTN is great Hard Rock, and Carrie is a ballad, while On The Loose offers some Metal speed. Timeless classic.

Unless you’re living under a(hard) rock, chances are you have seen that GEICO commercial that shows "Europe" in a lunch room singing the “The Final Countdown”. I noticed the band was playing locally at a club a few months back as I guess with that commercial's notoriety the band has had somewhat of a resurgence in popularity. That re-recorded version of ‘The Final Countdown’ hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts last October 2015, as that single was #1 back in the day in 1987 in half the world, but not in the U.S. I would be curious how much in copyright $ the band has been paid for that song being played in endless NBA, NHL arenas, as well as ringtones, video games, ect. I had this album as a kid and liked several songs but was never a big fan. Their last decade of releases with a harder edge sound isn't that catchy IMO, but any band that can survive 3 decades + deserves props. For good luck in the future the band should all get GECKO tattoos (henna just in case they lose the Geico gig)

Much better than the first two albums. Not because I love AOR but the musicianship, songwritting, production are way better. 'The Final Countdown' is a monster of a song, but I think it sounds a bit displaced if compared to the rest of the songs. 'Rock the Night', 'Danger on the Track', 'Cherokee' and 'Time has Come' are some of my favourites. My Cd also contains 3 live songs.

1986 is really hard to pick a single best album from the glory years 1982-1992. I could have picked Bon Jovi, Stryper, Cinderella, Tesla or Van Halen. Instead I have gone with Europe. The Final Countdown is unfairly overshadowed by the monster of a title track. But, track after track are high quality. Rock the Night is anthemic, Carrie a brilliant ballad, Cherokee is melodic perfection. There is zero filler. A brilliant release from an exceptional band. A+.

10 very very solid songs, the outtake On Broken Wings, is also killer! THIS is how you do it, definition of "all killer, no filler", since all songs are certainly very good indeed. You got great vocals, guitars and hooks everywhere here. Ultra-consistent album that sold more than 6 million copies worldwide (3 x Platinum in US). Drums have a little 80s feeling perhaps, but mostly, production+mix is superb. Mic Michaeli is a very good keyboard player, not to be forgotten, he is all over this record and in a very good way. John Norum plays and Joey sings world class, so well that even the 'haters' had a hard time to not love this. For a little while, band could compete with Bon Jovi, but only for a short while. But Sweden was proud nevertheless. The 1987 (and 1991) "Europe In America" Laserdisc is amazing when you want to hear and see how it all went down.
