So here it is. Europe's very own 'Slang' or 'ShadowLife' or 'Ultraphobic' or 'Generation Swine' or 'Subhuman Race' etc. They'll survive this effort because it just about retains some elements of the past (the first 2 tracks are okay, and the production is HUGE), but who cares if they survive? I blame Norum. His latest solo efforts have been horrific. Whatever. This is modern and grungey, and lacks hooks and melodies, and is nothing short of a SELL-OUT. They should be ashamed of themselves. 4/10.

I agree with you TIM. Being swedish it's very hard to accept this album. I know it's not 1986 anymore, but Europe should stick to what made them successfull. This album feels like a commercial effort to make up for some of the money they lost when they went bankrupt. Im very disappointed in this.

iF THIS album realy sound like those records TIM, then EUROPE dont deserve any respect anymore betraying their fans that made them millioners back in the 80s.

In the era of what is now passing itself as new rock/ metal, then this CD actually stands out like a shining gem. True, this CD isn't what Europe used to be, nor does it sound like the band we all knew and enjoyed. But compared to the trash that *rock* stations in the US play, then this is a slice o' fried gold.

Any rumours of a 'grunge tag' that will undoubtedly follow this release around are completely false and are normally applied by people that have never listened grunge closely or have an inability to move on from the past. Heavier, deeper grooves, deeper lyrics'.great album. Blows the f**k out of most mainstream rock acts''it smokes!!!

Hey! If you were a member of a popular hair band, and you're reading this right now, listen up. YOUR FANS WILL HATE ALBUMS OF YOURS WITH A CHANGED SOUND, AND GRUNGE FANS WILL NOT BUY AN ALBUM BY A FORMER 80'S HAIR METAL BAND!!!

I could never put this album together with those listed by TIM(2), IMO they are far worst than Europe's new effort. But, of course, Start From The Dark is a very disappointing return. I liked 3 tracks (Got To Have Faith, Sucker and Hero), the other tracks are frm acceptable to horrible, but again, SFTD is better than Slang, Ultraphobic and MUCH better than Shadowlife, the worst album ever. Maybe if we could listen some keys things could be better...

you said it Carmine Rose! Some bands seem to think that if they change their sound to whatever is popular, they will increase albums ales because of all those fans of whatever is popular will buy it. But it's usually a poor effort, so neither the bands fans nor the fans of the music will buy it. But I think there's a lot of influence from record companies on that too... I'm going to see Europe in a few weeks, so i'm curious to see if the will play a a lot of the new stuff.

I agree with Carmine Rose! 80's fans will hate this release and avoid at all cost once they read the reviews and younger fans of 'new wave' rock won't cough up sixteen bucks for a band they remember their sister dancing to in Aqua Net and pink Lycra. I was a big Europe fan in the 80's and remember many complaining about the 'Prisoners In Paradise' release which I loved! That time they changed only enough to produce a slight edge for the 90's. This time...well, this time it's f*ckin' over!

I don't get it....this album surely isn't THAT bad??? I agree with krsitain: 'It's not 1986 anymore'. So they took the elements which made them big and took it to another level. In some magazines I read people call this the comeback of the year, I totally agree...

Good comback, better then nothing at all from them. It's really heavyer than the last two, but that was years ago. Norum had much to say on this one, that we can hear. They are sure better live anyway. I saw them on the Sweden Rock Festival in the summer and this sunday (24/10)in Copenhagen, Denmark and that was a really good show.

Hello, i like this new europe record, must be boring to anyone to make always the same sound and also for some listeners. I am glad to hear different styled songs of the band. I see the quality of the band to adapt to the current sounds. Maybe some solos of Norum are just exercises and needs more melody, but just that. I am musician and I also have that feeling of make always new stuff. Would suck a same sound of the 80's, it can't be, and it is not for business is a matter of evolution. Q = 8

I agree with you that change can be good, if it shows some kind of musical growth. A lot of bands seem to change for commercial reasons, just to appeal to a broader audience. You have to be faithfull to your fans (imo)

Yesterday I saw them Live here in Hamburg/Germany. I wasn't sure what to expect from them BUT they played a lot of the older songs and those songs were the ones who came best to the fans (I guess EUROPE learned that they shouldn't change their style too much as I wrote in many magazines they would). The most LOVED songs were 'Rock the night', 'Superstisious', 'Cherokee' and -of course- 'THE FINAL COUNTDOWN' (that's my faves too) -->I think that says it all! However, I DO think their new album is

miles BETTER than the rest of new releases around. By the way, they are anything but 'grunge' since I listened to a couple of their new songs at the concert, let's be fair they are not that good that I bought the album right away BUT they are not as bad as well. 6/10

Have you ever heard Grunge? It was certainly nothing like the new Europe offering. So the guitars sound heavier and dirtier, so what. If they did another 'Final Countdown' you'd be saying they are cashing in. It is not the 80's any more so why can't the band evolve a slightly different sound? I think it's great and can't wait to catch their London show. Just broaden your musical outlook/tastes and stop whinging... Next you'll be crying about Poison not wearing make up anymore!!!!!

When I said what I said above, I was kind of jumping the gun in reference to this album. I still stand by what I said about bands trying to go modern, and that going modern is counterproductive, because it is. Motley Crue tried it and the album flopped on its ass, same with Skid Row and Def Leppard. But I did hear the song Got To Have Faith, and while the music isn't bad, Joey's voice has a lost a step or ten. I mean, he's lost everything that gave him his validity as the singer of Europe...
|
From: Carmine Rose |
Date: October 30, 2004 at 18:55 |
...I heard samples of a few other songs from melodicrock.com, and they showed the same thing, good slightly heavier music (NOT grunge), but without Joey's voice behind it. Whoever's in Europe CLAIMING that he's Joey Tempest, tell me something. WHERE'S THE REAL JOEY TEMPEST AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH HIM?
|
From: Carmine Rose |
Date: October 30, 2004 at 18:59 |
Oh yeah one more thing. Disregarding the fact that Europe is on a half-ass record label now, had this album been released right after The Final Countdown, it would have flopped on its ass just like any other band (except Van Halen, with Hagar) who tried to put out a different sound and gain a new audience.

Great record, very powerful, I see the gig in Milan, Italy last week and the new tunes are sounding great even better than the old songs. Mr. Norum is a great axeman and a lots of new bands have a lot to learn from these guys. It's great to be back such a band! Anyway, I want to add 2 things: Ultraphobic & Slang are great records. Stop writing in spanish.

I saw them here in Spain, in LorcaRock and they were magic. I think this album is the best album of the year with no discuss. It has dramatism power and melody and is an 'in your face' cd.It's like the last solo album from Joey, but harder... for me is perfect! they have changed with the times and it wouldn't be right another 'Out of this world' in 2004, this album sound fresh and direct and is tracking down on my cd player everyday. I give it a 9/10. For contact: davidgilvallejo@wanadoo.es

Like some other people here, I was hoping for a new The Final countdown, so I was very dissapointed from Start from the dark. Getting over the fact that they want to sound different, I've found some songs nice and some ohters boring 6/10 is my rate. I hope that Europe will do like like TNT, after some modern stuff they will come back to the mighty 80s melodic hard rock, and make a materpiece like 'My religion'. My hope for this wonderful sound are now on the danish Fate.

Europe is one of those bands that express a certain time and a certain trend in the music they make. When the band recorded The Final Countdown that was the right album in 1986. Now, in 2004, this is the right album again! I love the songs and I love when bands manage to understand the new 'formulas' that captivate the public. Great album! 'Got to have faith', 'Hero' and 'Reason' are my favorites.

I think John Norum ruins this album and makes me wish once more it had been Kee at the guitar helm. That said, songs 2-9 are pretty much all good slabs of heavy rock. I really dig 'Hero', and 'Start from the dark' is great too. Basically, the rest of the band sound awesome, Joey's voice is excellent and his songwriting is a highlight for me. I like what Joey does here and I like what the rest do here. IMO, John is all that f*cks this album up. One toned down riff is cool, but 12? Annoying guitar

Some may call me crazy but I enjoyed most of this album. I agree that it is way different from everything they tried in the past but So What? The title track is OUTSTANDING, but also Got To Have Faith, Sucker, Wake Up Call and Spirit Of The Underdog are standouts.. Listen to it carefully and you'll see that it's not the crap you all 've been talking about.. PS Joey Is a bit older, Lads.. You can't expect him to sing like in 'Europe' or 'Final Countdown' etc etc

In my initial review I dwelled on the point that I thought Norum ruined the album and that's still my view, but I'm surprised at just how harsh some are being. I find it unfortunate when people cannot appreciate a good song outside of a specific genre. No offence to anyone, but there are some very good songs here to appreciate like 'Hero', 'Start from the dark' etc. I know it's disappointing for big keyboard fans, but a good song is a good song IMO. Give it a go- it's certainly no 'Shadowlife'.

LOL, Perry! I used to think that too, that all their talent must have been in their hair! Poison, Bon Jovi, Warrant, Motley Crue, Dokken etc. How the mighty fell, but at least there are still plenty that fly the flag high. When you look at it, it was mostly the bigger, more 'popular' bands that really went to shit (except Tesla). Still, I heard this again and tracks like 'Hero', 'Start from the dark', 'Flames', 'Reason' and 'Sucker' are all great tunes. Good - though different - album.

From: wyrm |

'easy cash(in)'???? What would be easier than recording 'the final countdown prt2'? No easy cashin' here! It takes balls to come up with an album like this: High quality melodic rock, but with a twist, not something all fans expect. I also don't think that the music you'll find on this disc is MTV material, so they are NOT going for the $$, but 'just' made an album from the heart. Well done, screw the critics!
|
From: AOR freaky |

Wyrm : stuff like 'the final countdown ' is no longer in, mate ! You have to use grunts and down tuned guitars to be hot these days ! And that's just what Europe did. Trying to be popular and in, so they can make a lot of easy money ! If they released a second 'The Final Countdown' only their loyal fans (already older and probably no longer buying CD's) should have bought it ! And if you call this quality 'melodic' rock, there's something wrong with your ears ! Where's the melody here ?????? !

Truely the guitars are weak -always the same 'down tuned' stuff- but if you are a EUROPE 'fan' not just someone who jumped on the train named THE FINAL COUNTDOWN you still like them 'cos what's with their first two releases e.g. ???? I would have loved them for a new THE FINAL COUNTDOWN for the memory of the 80s but here are still some (-few-)melodies in here.

I have to agree with Wyrm here. Like this album or not, these guys did not choose this style to 'cash in'. I honestly believe they'd have had a better shot if they released an album like 'The Final countdown', and agree that this was the route to go in order NOT to make some dollars, abandoning a lot of fans stuck to the early sound. But for many, there are still great songs here and it's just what the guys are into these days - these kind of songs, so they recorded them because they wanted to.

Going modern or shifting to different styles is ok, only when you do it gradually. When a band Like House of lords, Dokken etc. goes away for a while then comes back. They have to play to the fans that was there for them when they or change their name. Dokken made the mistake with shadow life, it flopped. Their new albums are closer to their old style taking into consideration that Pilson and Lynch are gone. If they have stayed together all along and made the change gradually, it may have a chan

well, you would think with all the AOR rebirth that Europe would do the type of tunes we all love them to do, instead, they did this album, not bad, just not Europe, I really do enjoy the first few songs, but after that, I lose interest and seem to go back to the first few songs. Well, we can hope for a return to form I guess!!!

Europe survived the 'I hate myself and I want to die' mood of the 90's and now they give us this masterpiece of 2000's hard rock! 9/10

It's a little too 'convinient' for bands of this ilk in that if you say you don't like this disc they just think 'Oh they're stuck in the 80's'. I WANT progression in my bands and while there are some great moments here ('Hero', 'Roll With You') there are also moments (Song# 12) where these guys follow every unoriginal 'modern' rock cliche in the book it's embarassing. One of those 50/50 discs. The great songs are GREAT but when they try to impress how 'deep' they are it's audio torture!

If all the songs on 'SFTD' were as good as 'Flames', 'Hero', 'Wake Up Call', 'Spirit Of The Underdog' & 'Sucker' then this would have been a superb modern melodic hard rock album - sadly though there were too many fillers - which is why I gave this 7.5... One other thing though, the first 5 EUROPE albums all had individuality - this is no different except it's lost the big choruses - which, sadly - was EUROPE!

At first I was a little disappointed in the fact that Europe have moved quite much away from their 'older sound' on Start from the dark. But after getting into the new album more, it grows like hell on you! I love the old stuff, but still I like this new one very much too. Start from the dark, Hero, Flames, Wake up call are some of the best tracks. Song no.12 does not fit Europe that well..., but the rest are good tracks and I'd give this cd at least 8/10. It got balls!!

Loved it. The poodle-haired, keyboard fluffed Europe albums of the mid-80s never did anything for me. The first two and Prisoners in Paradise were solid albums, but this one just stomps on all three of those. I love the darker tone and the focus on the guitars as opposed to the keys. Yeah, Norum is getting a little too modern for my taste, but he still writes great riffs, and this album is full of them.

Saludos

They became their antithesis. As a Melodic Rock fan myself I don't like it. I don't think it's Europe I'm listening to so as far as I'm concerned the band never returned. This is an Alternative record to my ears. The big sound is gone. Sound minimal, tone depressed. I wouldn't consider it heavy, their Le Baron Boys stuff was miles ahead and that was good. Lack of quality here. I understand their motivation for the change in sound showing the many sides of the band catering to different generations but encounter a loss in identity with this one. Their known for melody, I don't hear it anymore. It's the typical cliché most Classic Rock deals with in the 00's. Expectations I lost long ago, hope never really fades. Always a pleasure to hear from them again but this is not your product. Rename to Force or something new.

Much like a Nazi supermodel, this CD has its share of flaws, but overall it's a pretty darn good effort by an 80s rock band trying to update their sound into something modern and relevant. They started by going for a heavier, beefier guitar sound which is sonically superb thanks to a stellar production job. From there they laid down some deep riffs, really giving the album the kind of grooves that make you want to bang your head. Then they piled on just enough catchy hooks to make the songs stick like they did back in the 80s heydays. They finished by painting the whole project with a darker edge that has alienated many a fan but tickles my musical fancy just fine.

The "return" of Europe...nothing as close as their glorious past releases but at the same time trying to enter into the new decade with a modern approach in their songs(for good or for bad)..."Got To Have Faith","Start From The Dark"(indeed, for some people these are really dark songs ),"Flames","Hero"(nice) & "Sucker" are my "faves"...75/100

The year is 2004, Europe has recently reunited and decided to release their first new studio album of original material since 1991's "Prisoners in Paradise". Instead of making a vintage 80's sounding album, Europe opt to take the more modern approach. At first, this modern style seems to work and it seems to suit Europe quite well, and it comes off sounding like a more modern take on their previous album from '91 (which was DYNAMITE!), but then the album starts to drag in the second half. Highlights on this include the first 6 tracks, plus "Sucker". I give this one a 76/100.
