So here it is. Europe's very own 'Slang' or 'ShadowLife' or 'Ultraphobic' or 'Generation Swine' or 'Subhuman Race' etc. They'll survive this effort because it just about retains some elements of the past (the first 2 tracks are okay, and the production is HUGE), but who cares if they survive? I blame Norum. His latest solo efforts have been horrific. Whatever. This is modern and grungey, and lacks hooks and melodies, and is nothing short of a SELL-OUT. They should be ashamed of themselves. 4/10.

From: Kristian Date: October 21, 2004 at 8:15
I agree with you TIM. Being swedish it's very hard to accept this album. I know it's not 1986 anymore, but Europe should stick to what made them successfull. This album feels like a commercial effort to make up for some of the money they lost when they went bankrupt. Im very disappointed in this.

From: Rene Date: October 21, 2004 at 13:52
iF THIS album realy sound like those records TIM, then EUROPE dont deserve any respect anymore betraying their fans that made them millioners back in the 80s.

From: love metal Date: October 21, 2004 at 16:00
i really liked the song 'SUCKER' the rest was not that good.

From: meradona Date: October 21, 2004 at 16:07
prefiero no opinar, 2/10, triste, muy triste

From: Carl Date: October 21, 2004 at 22:20
In the era of what is now passing itself as new rock/ metal, then this CD actually stands out like a shining gem. True, this CD isn't what Europe used to be, nor does it sound like the band we all knew and enjoyed. But compared to the trash that *rock* stations in the US play, then this is a slice o' fried gold.

From: Slikk Vicc Date: October 23, 2004 at 4:56
Any rumours of a 'grunge tag' that will undoubtedly follow this release around are completely false and are normally applied by people that have never listened grunge closely or have an inability to move on from the past. Heavier, deeper grooves, deeper lyrics'.great album. Blows the f**k out of most mainstream rock acts''it smokes!!!

From: Carmine Rose Date: October 23, 2004 at 9:19
Hey! If you were a member of a popular hair band, and you're reading this right now, listen up. YOUR FANS WILL HATE ALBUMS OF YOURS WITH A CHANGED SOUND, AND GRUNGE FANS WILL NOT BUY AN ALBUM BY A FORMER 80'S HAIR METAL BAND!!!

From: MelodicMan Date: October 24, 2004 at 16:24
I could never put this album together with those listed by TIM(2), IMO they are far worst than Europe's new effort. But, of course, Start From The Dark is a very disappointing return. I liked 3 tracks (Got To Have Faith, Sucker and Hero), the other tracks are frm acceptable to horrible, but again, SFTD is better than Slang, Ultraphobic and MUCH better than Shadowlife, the worst album ever. Maybe if we could listen some keys things could be better...

From: Dusty Date: October 25, 2004 at 7:16
you said it Carmine Rose! Some bands seem to think that if they change their sound to whatever is popular, they will increase albums ales because of all those fans of whatever is popular will buy it. But it's usually a poor effort, so neither the bands fans nor the fans of the music will buy it. But I think there's a lot of influence from record companies on that too... I'm going to see Europe in a few weeks, so i'm curious to see if the will play a a lot of the new stuff.

From: Deadboy Date: October 25, 2004 at 9:58
FFS THIS IS NOT A GRUNGE ALBUM!!!!!!

From: Cleft Boot Date: October 25, 2004 at 12:01
I agree with Carmine Rose! 80's fans will hate this release and avoid at all cost once they read the reviews and younger fans of 'new wave' rock won't cough up sixteen bucks for a band they remember their sister dancing to in Aqua Net and pink Lycra. I was a big Europe fan in the 80's and remember many complaining about the 'Prisoners In Paradise' release which I loved! That time they changed only enough to produce a slight edge for the 90's. This time...well, this time it's f*ckin' over!

From: wyrm Date: October 26, 2004 at 7:24
I don't get it....this album surely isn't THAT bad??? I agree with krsitain: 'It's not 1986 anymore'. So they took the elements which made them big and took it to another level. In some magazines I read people call this the comeback of the year, I totally agree...

From: BOB Date: October 26, 2004 at 18:13
Good comback, better then nothing at all from them. It's really heavyer than the last two, but that was years ago. Norum had much to say on this one, that we can hear. They are sure better live anyway. I saw them on the Sweden Rock Festival in the summer and this sunday (24/10)in Copenhagen, Denmark and that was a really good show.

From: Chuck Date: October 26, 2004 at 23:53
Hello, i like this new europe record, must be boring to anyone to make always the same sound and also for some listeners. I am glad to hear different styled songs of the band. I see the quality of the band to adapt to the current sounds. Maybe some solos of Norum are just exercises and needs more melody, but just that. I am musician and I also have that feeling of make always new stuff. Would suck a same sound of the 80's, it can't be, and it is not for business is a matter of evolution. Q = 8

From: Dusty Date: October 27, 2004 at 2:16
I agree with you that change can be good, if it shows some kind of musical growth. A lot of bands seem to change for commercial reasons, just to appeal to a broader audience. You have to be faithfull to your fans (imo)

From: Erik Date: October 27, 2004 at 14:25
Yeah i am 16 i like the old Europe and i just download this album. It sucks and they will never make it around people my age so why try i say they go back to the way they use to be. Atleast they will sound good and have fans again.

From: Scandi Date: October 28, 2004 at 8:04
Yesterday I saw them Live here in Hamburg/Germany. I wasn't sure what to expect from them BUT they played a lot of the older songs and those songs were the ones who came best to the fans (I guess EUROPE learned that they shouldn't change their style too much as I wrote in many magazines they would). The most LOVED songs were 'Rock the night', 'Superstisious', 'Cherokee' and -of course- 'THE FINAL COUNTDOWN' (that's my faves too) -->I think that says it all! However, I DO think their new album is

From: Scandi Date: October 28, 2004 at 8:07
miles BETTER than the rest of new releases around. By the way, they are anything but 'grunge' since I listened to a couple of their new songs at the concert, let's be fair they are not that good that I bought the album right away BUT they are not as bad as well. 6/10

From: Hairspray Date: October 30, 2004 at 9:27
Have you ever heard Grunge? It was certainly nothing like the new Europe offering. So the guitars sound heavier and dirtier, so what. If they did another 'Final Countdown' you'd be saying they are cashing in. It is not the 80's any more so why can't the band evolve a slightly different sound? I think it's great and can't wait to catch their London show. Just broaden your musical outlook/tastes and stop whinging... Next you'll be crying about Poison not wearing make up anymore!!!!!

From: Great Dane Date: October 30, 2004 at 14:25
Ha ha. Youre right. This is an excellent album.........NOT GRUNGE. Hard Rock fans are just about the most conservative bastards around. Love this comment. Next you'll be crying about Poison not wearing make up anymore!!!!! Ha ha ha .

From: Carmine Rose Date: October 30, 2004 at 18:53
When I said what I said above, I was kind of jumping the gun in reference to this album. I still stand by what I said about bands trying to go modern, and that going modern is counterproductive, because it is. Motley Crue tried it and the album flopped on its ass, same with Skid Row and Def Leppard. But I did hear the song Got To Have Faith, and while the music isn't bad, Joey's voice has a lost a step or ten. I mean, he's lost everything that gave him his validity as the singer of Europe...

From: Carmine Rose Date: October 30, 2004 at 18:55
...I heard samples of a few other songs from melodicrock.com, and they showed the same thing, good slightly heavier music (NOT grunge), but without Joey's voice behind it. Whoever's in Europe CLAIMING that he's Joey Tempest, tell me something. WHERE'S THE REAL JOEY TEMPEST AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH HIM?

From: Carmine Rose Date: October 30, 2004 at 18:59
Oh yeah one more thing. Disregarding the fact that Europe is on a half-ass record label now, had this album been released right after The Final Countdown, it would have flopped on its ass just like any other band (except Van Halen, with Hagar) who tried to put out a different sound and gain a new audience.

From: Rick/Holland Date: November 1, 2004 at 6:16
C'mon everybody, This is an KILLER ALBUM, Listen to this album again and again and again and you learn to love it!! This album is much, MUCH better than Prisoners in paradise & Out of this world. Only Wings of tomorrow & The final countdown are a little better i think! Best songs: Flames (REAL KILLER SONG), Start from the dark, Wake up call, Spirit of the underdog & America GIVE THIS WONDERFUL ALBUM A FAIR CHANCE!!

From: mark free Date: November 3, 2004 at 9:23
shit.. this is not europe !!! 1/10 fucking ultraphobic..

From: Jacky Date: November 8, 2004 at 7:58
Great record, very powerful, I see the gig in Milan, Italy last week and the new tunes are sounding great even better than the old songs. Mr. Norum is a great axeman and a lots of new bands have a lot to learn from these guys. It's great to be back such a band! Anyway, I want to add 2 things: Ultraphobic & Slang are great records. Stop writing in spanish.

From: David Gil Date: November 8, 2004 at 19:46
I saw them here in Spain, in LorcaRock and they were magic. I think this album is the best album of the year with no discuss. It has dramatism power and melody and is an 'in your face' cd.It's like the last solo album from Joey, but harder... for me is perfect! they have changed with the times and it wouldn't be right another 'Out of this world' in 2004, this album sound fresh and direct and is tracking down on my cd player everyday. I give it a 9/10. For contact: davidgilvallejo@wanadoo.es

From: thegram Date: November 9, 2004 at 13:26
hello all you critics this europes best album since the final countdown and is a step in the right direction and all the songs are great

From: Muddley Date: November 9, 2004 at 23:34
Youre right.

From: Maurice Date: November 10, 2004 at 3:53

From: Federico Date: November 14, 2004 at 12:54
Like some other people here, I was hoping for a new The Final countdown, so I was very dissapointed from Start from the dark. Getting over the fact that they want to sound different, I've found some songs nice and some ohters boring 6/10 is my rate. I hope that Europe will do like like TNT, after some modern stuff they will come back to the mighty 80s melodic hard rock, and make a materpiece like 'My religion'. My hope for this wonderful sound are now on the danish Fate.

From: Dusty Date: November 22, 2004 at 3:35
heard them live last week, they were awesome! The new songs really sounded great live. I love Wake up call! It's good to see that bands like this are still able to give a great show. Europe rocks!!

From: Hairspray Date: November 22, 2004 at 4:17
I agree, the new songs do sound great live but so do the old ones too!! I saw them in London and despite them not playing 'Prisoners in Paradise' 'Halfway to Heaven' or 'More Than Meets the Eye' they were fantastic....Europe: Keep on walking that road and I'll follow

From: ERIK Date: November 27, 2004 at 21:09
I saw them live recently, and they kicked ass! Especially Joey Tempest!!! This record is NOT grunge, and it's not sell out. It's back to the roots with a modern touch. The songs are not so good, but it's worth getting just for the opening track.

From: Date: November 30, 2004 at 22:42
hello people! its martin from argentina!!! RIGHT!! todays europe its not the one we used to hear..but..as the name...of the band,,wich is importante..in this,,years,,they have to SEll..so..they have to adapt..their music..to todays shit music..but..for fans..they are still europe..the album isnt bad..but..is another story!! times has changed..bands..to...so..let them an oportunit.. BUUUT! if you want to hear bands with..BALLS!! to play 80's music.. hear PINK CREAM 69 , 21 guns

From: TIM (2) Date: December 2, 2004 at 6:19
I was in Belgium with work recently and saw a big new poster of Europe with their tour dates on, and in blank pen across the poster it said 'SOLD OUT'. Oh the irony.

From: z4roxx Date: December 14, 2004 at 18:00
SORRY EUROPE BUT LAST ALBUM....FUCKING BAD!!MODERN STYLE,NOT A EUROPE RELEASE!I'VE SEEN THEM IN MILAN,GREAT AS ALWAYS BUT THEY COME BACK WITHOUT A NEW CD....

From: howe Date: December 16, 2004 at 8:39
Europe is one of those bands that express a certain time and a certain trend in the music they make. When the band recorded The Final Countdown that was the right album in 1986. Now, in 2004, this is the right album again! I love the songs and I love when bands manage to understand the new 'formulas' that captivate the public. Great album! 'Got to have faith', 'Hero' and 'Reason' are my favorites.

From: Sergio Date: December 19, 2004 at 11:50
You can't stand listening to it more than once. It really sucks. The guys should be ashamed.

From: Tom Bombadil Date: December 19, 2004 at 21:15
Nah your wrong, you are just to narrowminded, listen to the lyrics, and play, it has some amazing songs

From: Geoff Date: December 20, 2004 at 3:38
I think John Norum ruins this album and makes me wish once more it had been Kee at the guitar helm. That said, songs 2-9 are pretty much all good slabs of heavy rock. I really dig 'Hero', and 'Start from the dark' is great too. Basically, the rest of the band sound awesome, Joey's voice is excellent and his songwriting is a highlight for me. I like what Joey does here and I like what the rest do here. IMO, John is all that f*cks this album up. One toned down riff is cool, but 12? Annoying guitar

From: JAN Date: December 22, 2004 at 12:16
KICK ASS ALBUM

From: ANDERS Date: January 4, 2005 at 12:36
FUCKING AWESOME ALBUMS KILLER GUITARS A LITTLE BIT DARK BUT IS EUROPE.YOU ROCK 7.8

From: JAY JAY ANT Date: January 7, 2005 at 12:26
NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE THIS AWESOME EFFORT.TH FOLLOWUP WILL BE SO MUCH BETTER.I LIKE IT.GREAT ALBUM BUY.

From: Stu Date: January 10, 2005 at 15:03
I can't believe the amount of bad reviews for this cd. This is one of the best cd's of 2004 (along with the new TNT CD). The songwriting & musicianship are incredible & the mixture of ballads & rockers make this a must have in your Europe collection. Don't read the bad reviews and purchase this awesome cd, it really is very good.

From: Great Dane Date: January 10, 2005 at 17:08
Stu, you have to accept the fact that the readers of Heavyharmonies are EXTREMELY 'stuck' in the 80's. This is a fantastic release, and I love it. One of the best Hard Rock releases of 2004.

From: z4roxx Date: January 10, 2005 at 18:40
People,I don t believe how this release could like,if you consider a new band of modern hard rock it's a thing, but that's AN EUROPE RELEASE!people waited more 10 years to listen this one???I can t believe that this cd could like...I like old Europe,I am the only one?????I don t think this....

From: Sergio Date: January 11, 2005 at 16:39
No z4roxx, you're not the only one who think this is crap, and yes, great dane, i'm EXTREMELY stuck in the 80's, but i really like bands like 7TH HEAVEN and VONRAY. BTW, i'm still thinking that CRYSTAL BLUE-DETOUR is 1000 times better than this.

From: z4roxx Date: January 11, 2005 at 20:38
Thanx again Sergio for your support!I've seen Europe live in Milan, really crap!Tempest is finished as singer, every old tracks was re-arranged in low tonality because his voice is dead!ahahaha!!Crystal blue another God band for me!'Detour'masterpiece but it's in the same style as'caught in the game',very little difference between old cd's and the new one.If you love Crystal blue I recommend you Return, another awesome and original band...regards!

From: Giouri_G Date: January 13, 2005 at 5:34
Some may call me crazy but I enjoyed most of this album. I agree that it is way different from everything they tried in the past but So What? The title track is OUTSTANDING, but also Got To Have Faith, Sucker, Wake Up Call and Spirit Of The Underdog are standouts.. Listen to it carefully and you'll see that it's not the crap you all 've been talking about.. PS Joey Is a bit older, Lads.. You can't expect him to sing like in 'Europe' or 'Final Countdown' etc etc

From: Geoff Date: January 13, 2005 at 6:52
In my initial review I dwelled on the point that I thought Norum ruined the album and that's still my view, but I'm surprised at just how harsh some are being. I find it unfortunate when people cannot appreciate a good song outside of a specific genre. No offence to anyone, but there are some very good songs here to appreciate like 'Hero', 'Start from the dark' etc. I know it's disappointing for big keyboard fans, but a good song is a good song IMO. Give it a go- it's certainly no 'Shadowlife'.

From: z4roxx Date: January 13, 2005 at 19:46
Geoff,I agree with you but...in my opinion that's not an Europe release!Sorry if I repeat this thing but it's so!That's a very good modern hard rock release, few keyboards, strong guitars with modern sounding ext..yes,some songs not bad but Europe had to come back with an old school aor release, not with this one. That's my thinkin'(and maybe mant people can think as me).Maybe one of the best come back could be Talk of the town of some years ago

From: z4roxx Date: January 13, 2005 at 19:53
Hey Giouri_G,ok Tempest is not a guy but...do you ever heard Biff of Saxon??maybe he has 54/56 years and..what a voice!!Tempest after Europe split-up around 1991/92 gone to do country or rock style and tymbrical voice maybe changes and you cannot come back if you don t have voice to do aor anymore.Ok that Europe need of J.Tempest but....

From: AOR freaky Date: January 16, 2005 at 14:02
Another 'big' name jumping on the modern/alternative bandwagon. A real sell out ! Very disappointing. They can do so much better !

From: Harry Date: January 25, 2005 at 13:06
'Hero' is IMO the best track off this album. But every song here is simply awesome. My favorite cd from 2004.

From: perry.k Date: January 26, 2005 at 12:46
Along with BON JOVI,DEF LEPPARD,KISS(80s),WHITESNAKE(87/89),this band has been the soundtrack of my childhood.O.k i realize now its mid00s not some 20years ago,but this cd is the ultimate 'malakia'.In english total bullshit.what's the meaning of a reunion if it's to destroy the mythical name you've created in the past,by releasing such crap?I can compromise with a modern production, but this shitty,alternative/ grunge/trendy,neo-rock sound;NO WAY!Hope they meet comercial failure with thatcrap

From: perry.k Date: January 26, 2005 at 13:02
What's wrong with legendary 80s heroes like EUROPE,BON JOVI,D.LEPPARD, KING KOBRA,SCORPIONS,DOKKEN etc,and they release non-ipressive albums (in best case) the last 12years or so?Well maybe it was the BIG HAIR thing and when the bighair went away,so the inspiration did(haha)anywa a HUGE SALUTE to all those bands 4 the great times we spent listening to their songs and 4 the memories we keep in our minds and hearts 4ever.

From: Geoff Date: January 27, 2005 at 3:08
LOL, Perry! I used to think that too, that all their talent must have been in their hair! Poison, Bon Jovi, Warrant, Motley Crue, Dokken etc. How the mighty fell, but at least there are still plenty that fly the flag high. When you look at it, it was mostly the bigger, more 'popular' bands that really went to shit (except Tesla). Still, I heard this again and tracks like 'Hero', 'Start from the dark', 'Flames', 'Reason' and 'Sucker' are all great tunes. Good - though different - album.

From: Giouri_G Date: February 5, 2005 at 10:00
I've seen Biff Byford live and i agree he's a great voice. But i still believe that Joey even in his lower tonalities is a great singer. Far more complete than Biff, and he's a great composer too!

From: CACHORLA Date: February 7, 2005 at 19:12
GREAT RETURN!! GREAT BAND , GREAT ALBUM ,GREAT SONGS CONGRATULATIONS EUROPE FOR NOMINATION FOR THE GRAMMY 2004 'THE BEST ALBUM OF HARD ROCK' 9/10

From: AOR freaky Date: February 8, 2005 at 5:08
I'm afraid I have to disagree. The guitars are way to down tuned, trying to sound modern. Another band not thinking about their fans, but thinking of making easy money !

From: Erik Date: February 8, 2005 at 5:16
I am going along with AOR freaky here. This is a band that forgets their roots and is going for the easy cash(in). Tooooo modern sounding. If you are/were in the 'old' Europe style then you better avoid this.

From: wyrm Date: February 8, 2005 at 6:09
'easy cash(in)'???? What would be easier than recording 'the final countdown prt2'? No easy cashin' here! It takes balls to come up with an album like this: High quality melodic rock, but with a twist, not something all fans expect. I also don't think that the music you'll find on this disc is MTV material, so they are NOT going for the $$, but 'just' made an album from the heart. Well done, screw the critics!

From: AOR freaky Date: February 8, 2005 at 6:53
Wyrm : stuff like 'the final countdown ' is no longer in, mate ! You have to use grunts and down tuned guitars to be hot these days ! And that's just what Europe did. Trying to be popular and in, so they can make a lot of easy money ! If they released a second 'The Final Countdown' only their loyal fans (already older and probably no longer buying CD's) should have bought it ! And if you call this quality 'melodic' rock, there's something wrong with your ears ! Where's the melody here ?????? !

From: Erk Date: February 8, 2005 at 10:57
Balls to release some sort of grunge ? If Europe really had balls they would have released an album thats really about melodic rock. Like they did in the past. And not this alternative make a quick buck crap.

From: z4roxx Date: February 8, 2005 at 12:25
Great Aor Freaky, this cd worth nothin'!!!!I would see canceled this one from the site!!!

I don't know how they can do easy money with this modern shit soundin'...I was a huge fan of Europe but for this one I didn't waste a cd-r anyway....Probably they have new fans of this genre but how many old fans did they lost with this tragic reunion cd???????

From: Nanteau Date: February 8, 2005 at 14:27
Guess they didn't lost as much fans as you think Roxxy Whatever, the truth lies in the middle like always. Truely the guitars are weak -always the same 'down tuned' stuff- but if you are a EUROPE 'fan' not just someone who jumped on the train named THE FINAL COUNTDOWN you still like them 'cos what's with their first two releases e.g. ???? I would have loved them for a new THE FINAL COUNTDOWN for the memory of the 80s but here are still some (-few-)melodies in here.

From: Geoff Date: February 9, 2005 at 1:50
I have to agree with Wyrm here. Like this album or not, these guys did not choose this style to 'cash in'. I honestly believe they'd have had a better shot if they released an album like 'The Final countdown', and agree that this was the route to go in order NOT to make some dollars, abandoning a lot of fans stuck to the early sound. But for many, there are still great songs here and it's just what the guys are into these days - these kind of songs, so they recorded them because they wanted to.

Going modern or shifting to different styles is ok, only when you do it gradually. When a band Like House of lords, Dokken etc. goes away for a while then comes back. They have to play to the fans that was there for them when they or change their name. Dokken made the mistake with shadow life, it flopped. Their new albums are closer to their old style taking into consideration that Pilson and Lynch are gone. If they have stayed together all along and made the change gradually, it may have a chan

From: Swriter Date: February 19, 2005 at 20:28
well, you would think with all the AOR rebirth that Europe would do the type of tunes we all love them to do, instead, they did this album, not bad, just not Europe, I really do enjoy the first few songs, but after that, I lose interest and seem to go back to the first few songs. Well, we can hope for a return to form I guess!!!

When I want 80's hard rock I just buy a cd from the 80's. We can only thank a musician who is able to give us music that reflects his time time and that builds bridges to the future. Europe survived the 'I hate myself and I want to die' mood of the 90's and now they give us this masterpiece of 2000's hard rock! 9/10

Saludos

It's a little too 'convinient' for bands of this ilk in that if you say you don't like this disc they just think 'Oh they're stuck in the 80's'. I WANT progression in my bands and while there are some great moments here ('Hero', 'Roll With You') there are also moments (Song# 12) where these guys follow every unoriginal 'modern' rock cliche in the book it's embarassing. One of those 50/50 discs. The great songs are GREAT but when they try to impress how 'deep' they are it's audio torture!

From: Date: March 26, 2005 at 16:19
We pretend the '80 Europe. We mean,We love the melodic tracks in some pretty beautiful albums. The songs we like are, for example, the final countdown, rock the night, heart of stone, on the loose.... These were EUROPE, not the guys in the last album PLEASE HELP US TO MAKE THE REAL EUROPE COME BACK

If all the songs on 'SFTD' were as good as 'Flames', 'Hero', 'Wake Up Call', 'Spirit Of The Underdog' & 'Sucker' then this would have been a superb modern melodic hard rock album - sadly though there were too many fillers - which is why I gave this 7.5... One other thing though, the first 5 EUROPE albums all had individuality - this is no different except it's lost the big choruses - which, sadly - was EUROPE!

From: GLAM FAN Date: April 18, 2005 at 6:32
This album is even worse than the final countdown which at least good good weaks and good combination of melody and arena rock. But this album has got weak hooks and the songs sound uninspired. A big disappointment.

At first I was a little disappointed in the fact that Europe have moved quite much away from their 'older sound' on Start from the dark. But after getting into the new album more, it grows like hell on you! I love the old stuff, but still I like this new one very much too. Start from the dark, Hero, Flames, Wake up call are some of the best tracks. Song no.12 does not fit Europe that well..., but the rest are good tracks and I'd give this cd at least 8/10. It got balls!!

Man are people dogging this one. Besides the sound of the guitar, this record reminds me of the first two albums before they became just another poodle rock band. It flat out rocks.

From: jmikep Date: June 30, 2006 at 9:49
Loved it. The poodle-haired, keyboard fluffed Europe albums of the mid-80s never did anything for me. The first two and Prisoners in Paradise were solid albums, but this one just stomps on all three of those. I love the darker tone and the focus on the guitars as opposed to the keys. Yeah, Norum is getting a little too modern for my taste, but he still writes great riffs, and this album is full of them.

From: le_baron_boy Date: September 30, 2006 at 13:59
ESA ES LA DIFERENCIA CON RESPECTO A OTRAS BANDAS, Y CEO QUE TIENE QUE SER VALORADA ESA ACTITUD YA QUE ELLOS VAN POR MAS, NO ES UNA ACTITUD MERAMENTE CONFORMISTA LO CUAL ES MUY RESPETABLE TAMBIEN EN ESTE DISCO HAY TEMAS DE LA CALIDAD DE GOT TO HAVE FAITH, FLAMES , HERO, WAKE UO CALL, START FORM THE DARK O REASON SI COINCIDO CON MUCHOS Y SEGURO COINCIDIRAS CONMIGO QUE EL TEMA SONG 12 ES EL PERO TEMA DE EUROPE DE TODA SU CARRERA Y QUE ESE TEMA EN PARTICULAR NADA TIENE QUE VER CON EUROPE, PEROO

From: le_baron_boy Date: September 30, 2006 at 14:00

From: RAMYRO-LARSON Date: September 30, 2006 at 14:49

From: RAMYRO-LARSON Date: September 30, 2006 at 14:55

From: Rafo Phoenix Date: September 30, 2006 at 15:04

From: le_baron_boy Date: October 1, 2006 at 21:38

From: Cachorla Date: October 2, 2006 at 15:26

From: Cachorla Date: October 11, 2006 at 14:10

From: mauricio Date: October 15, 2006 at 15:27

From: mauricio Date: October 15, 2006 at 15:36

From: West Of Sunset Date: October 24, 2006 at 18:52

Ahahaha I only meant than this one it's a s**t for me,I love the old Europe and I say they have been one of the greatest of all times in the genre but now...they worth nothing more IMO.Circus Maximus cd worth 10,000 times this cd(isn't comparable).

From: mauricio Date: March 23, 2007 at 19:47

From: mauricio Date: March 23, 2007 at 20:00

From: Rafo Phoenix Date: March 27, 2007 at 9:22

From: Jose Date: March 29, 2007 at 20:59
Eres un buen guia, sigue as. Saludos

a fantastic comeback record that will blow your mind away! Europe's Start From The Dark album got me hypnotized by the magic of rock! Europe stick to their guns and delievers a great hard rock disc at a time when the market was screaming for some high voltage rock!

From: MikeTuinstra Date: March 1, 2009 at 19:25
They became their antithesis. As a Melodic Rock fan myself I don't like it. I don't think it's Europe I'm listening to so as far as I'm concerned the band never returned. This is an Alternative record to my ears. The big sound is gone. Sound minimal, tone depressed. I wouldn't consider it heavy, their Le Baron Boys stuff was miles ahead and that was good. Lack of quality here. I understand their motivation for the change in sound showing the many sides of the band catering to different generations but encounter a loss in identity with this one. Their known for melody, I don't hear it anymore. It's the typical clich most Classic Rock deals with in the 00's. Expectations I lost long ago, hope never really fades. Always a pleasure to hear from them again but this is not your product. Rename to Force or something new.

From: metalmaniac777 Date: January 16, 2010 at 13:29
Much like a Nazi supermodel, this CD has its share of flaws, but overall it's a pretty darn good effort by an 80s rock band trying to update their sound into something modern and relevant. They started by going for a heavier, beefier guitar sound which is sonically superb thanks to a stellar production job. From there they laid down some deep riffs, really giving the album the kind of grooves that make you want to bang your head. Then they piled on just enough catchy hooks to make the songs stick like they did back in the 80s heydays. They finished by painting the whole project with a darker edge that has alienated many a fan but tickles my musical fancy just fine.

excellent release by EUROPE and surely one of their best.i would call it updated, without being a sellout.the sound is huge with kevin elson in production and the songwriting is in the highest level.highlights are the magnifiscent "hero","sucker","start from the dark" and "spirit of the underdog".highly recommended for hard rockers only

From: rick kerch vzla Date: August 4, 2011 at 23:00
The "return" of Europe...nothing as close as their glorious past releases but at the same time trying to enter into the new decade with a modern approach in their songs(for good or for bad)..."Got To Have Faith","Start From The Dark"(indeed, for some people these are really dark songs ),"Flames","Hero"(nice) & "Sucker" are my "faves"...75/100

BUEN REGRESO DE LOS SUECOS,ESTE DISCO ESTA MUY BIEN,PESE UN POCO A SU CAMBIO DE ESTILO Y HACER UN HEAVY MAS OSCURO,SIGUEN TENIENDO MELODIA. 7'5/10

From: Metal Fox Date: September 22, 2016 at 4:22
The year is 2004, Europe has recently reunited and decided to release their first new studio album of original material since 1991's "Prisoners in Paradise". Instead of making a vintage 80's sounding album, Europe opt to take the more modern approach. At first, this modern style seems to work and it seems to suit Europe quite well, and it comes off sounding like a more modern take on their previous album from '91 (which was DYNAMITE!), but then the album starts to drag in the second half. Highlights on this include the first 6 tracks, plus "Sucker". I give this one a 76/100.
