With two immensly huge records in 1972, Heep were finally on top, headlining shows & of course in the public eye. This recording captures the band at the height of their powers in their native England where they finally earned some overdue respect. It all gelled into a perfect storm as Byron, Box, Hensley, Thain & Kerslake performed songs from their first disc through The Magician's Birthday album. Upon hearing these now classics again & again, it's apparent the band ripped the place to shreds like a hurricane. The setlist contained their most heavy numbers. Also, all of the members got a chance to shine in the Birmingham spotlight. Lead singer & charismatic front man David Byron relished the time, exhoting the crowd on several occasions, while Hensley & Box were able to display their dual axemanship, particularly on the heavily guitar oriented "Tears in my Eyes". Elsewhere, Thain & Kerslake grinded a severe pulsating backeat to "Gypsy" as Hensley & Box traded leads intermitten the house shaking rhythm. "July Morning", in it's full blown entirety, begins with a majestic hammond into by Hensley, then Box, soloing overtop. Thain fingered out the beautiful bass lines with Kerslake joining in on skins filling out the rhythm section. At last, Byron sends the song into full flight with his airy notes. A final highlight concluded the seemingly endless show when Heep debuted a medley of rock staples they had never laid down to any previous studio vinyl. With the edition of the medley, from Elvis to Chuck Berry, it seemed they were having too much fun to notice when to stop anyway.
