I still like this disc the most out of the entire collection. This was Dokken at their best. I still like the rest of their output up to Back for the Attack, but this album has always shown the most promise ot me. The sound on this one was great and they still sounded sincere. This one finds its way to my cd player the most. The songs are awesome with lots of ambience and emotion. George is restrained, but bang on the mark for every song and Don's vocals are great. Firing on all cylinders

One of my best albums , this one , pure Dokken music talkin' about love (or maybe hate!). Very emotional in any way , worth to buy it. JADED HEART is one of the best songs ever written in rock/metal.

One of the most polished Dokken albums that still has enough of a 'heavy' factor in most of the songs to warrant repeated listening. Some of the songs have the best melodies I've heard in any melodic metal release ('In My Dreams,' 'Slippin' Away'), but there's still a lot of crunch in Lynch's playing ('It's Not Love'). Unfortunately, there's still a few cheese songs mixed in ('Lightning Strikes Again') that brings the rating down slightly. (9 out of 10)

Rick, I went out and bought Dokken's new cd the day it was released (4/23) and I was only disappointed by the fact that there is only 37 minutes of listening time!! Still, some good stuff. 'Sunless Days' is a killer Dokken tune but a lot of the other stuff most long-time fans will probably be let down hearing it (no resemblance to 'UL&K' or 'BFTA'). Personally, I like many of the tracks (a good cover song, 'Everybody Needs (To Be With Someone)', 'Goodbye My Friend'); check it out for yourself.

I want to know the TRUTH! Was this album released in 1985 or in 1986? I read somewhere that this was from '86. Anyway, this is a good album. But not their greatest effort. Yet I'm a Lynch fan!

Who gives a fat rats ass what year it came out! That was over 15 years ago and no one gives a shit anymore. How is that for 'TRUTH' Metalhead?
|
From: TIM |

It was released in 1985 Metalhead. I just looked at the insert. The magazine could have been had a misprint. Unless there's a special pressing of it, that's the year it was released.
|
From: jason |
Date: May 18, 2002 at 13:28 |
Hey Tim, how do you now that your insert is right? Maybe the magazine was right! I know on the 3 doors down CD the copyright says 2000, but it didn't come out until Feb. 2001. So like I said before....does it really matter?

From: TIM |

It's not of national importance, I was just trying to help the guy out. Most of the time, when there's a mistake there's a recall. If you are a big music fan, somethimes the little details do matter. People tell me all the time that I know quite a bit about many things- it's because I asked instead of just blowing it off. Some of these questions may not be anything that interests you, but they might someone else. Personally I like to learn new things.

From: TIM |

Under Lock & Key is 'probably' (hey, everything is debatable) the gold standard of Dokken albums...they have a strong discography, some recent disappointments (as voiced by others) aside. For a newcomer to the hard rock/metal/pop metal/melodic metal genre(s), this effort is a fine jumping off point for an exploration of Dokken's music.

Nothin' to say, this is an absolute masterpiece. It sure gets ten. In my dreams,Lightin'strikes and don't lie to me are my favs. The new one is good too, my favs are Magic road,Under the gun and Sunless day. It gets 7,5 on my scale. John Norum has been replaced by an Italian guitar hero, Alex De Rosso, that's incredible.

'In my Dreams' is one of my favorite Dokken songs ever. Great vocals and the guitar work is priceless it doesnt need an explanation. 'Its not Love' is also a favorite of mine. I would say this was a high point in the bands career.

From: dokken6008 |

Federico mentioned two songs off the new Dokken album that had a lot of potential but they just don't quite make it. They could have used some extra work, is all. As for 'Sunless Days', that is one of the best songs I have heard all year. LOVE the riff, the solo, the chorus, the echo-effect on Don's voice during the chorus----a masterpiece of a song. Oh and j., it's okay!! But God, do I hate 'bands' like the one you just mentioned.......

They should have called this turd 'Dropping the Ball'. Perched on the edge of metal superstardom all Donald had to do was release an album with one killer track. Instead he comes up with 'The Hunter'? WTF! Granted there are a few rockers on this disc, but I can't get past the shiney suits and mundane songcraft. The band sucked live when I saw them open for Aerosmith on this tour.

For being released in 85' this is just a great combination of pop sensibilities with metal . My favorite Dokken cd and if some young kid today wanted to know what were some of the best 80's 'hair' metal cd's I'd feel comfortable handing him this one. Seems to be the most 'honest' sounding Dokken album and doesn't sound dated to me now in 03' and I think the reason is that the songs are so good and performed so well it really has no expiration date on it. Can't say the same about the cover!!

Definitely some classic tunes here, with tracks 1,2,3,4, & 6 being the stand-outs! 'It's Not Love' and 'In My Dreams' were Dokken's big video hits along with 'Alone Again' & 'Dream Warriors'.While this is definitely a classic hard rock disc,as a Dokken fan who owns all their domestic releases, I'd have to rank this one behind 'Back For the Attack','Tooth & Nail' ,AND 'Erase the Slate';still, this a MUST have for the true hard rock fan. 9.5/10

Someone said in a previous post that the first few Dokken albums did not age very well and though it pains me to say it, i'd have to agree. These guys were one of my favorite bands in the 80's but most of the songs sound better in my memories than they do when i play them now. These still is alot of good stuff on this album and I will defend Dokkken any time someone puts them down but compared to bands like Tesla they still kind of measure up short. I still give it 8/10 because most of the tunes

Don's vocals are exceptional---Lynch's guitar-work smokes !(He had some d*mn good tone on Key').Sorry,-Sambora,Mars,Deville,LaBar etc not even in the same league as George .Keifer',Bon Jovi',Micheals', Neil',Elliot',Rose'etc not even in the same league as Don Dokken. -Dokken'(original line-up) have always stood head and shoulders above their so called peers, just thought id point that out !!-------------

This is a very good album, great tunes and great guitar work from George, but I don't think Don's vocals are exceptional. His singing is ok, but his voice just misses something. I think singers as Tom Keifer, Jon Bon Jovi and the list you named all have something special (Vince Neil maybe doesn't sing as good, sometimes even off key, he has a voice of his own) and Dokken certainly does not stand head and shoulders over them, not all of them.

I agree with Dusty! How can Don's voice be better than tom keifer's. DON'S voice is like a cross between klaus meine(scorpion) and joey tempest(europe)but more similar to klaus except he can't scream as well as klaus. His vocal prowess however is better the klaus and in the same league as joey but not in the same class as BOTH sebastian bach(skid row) and TOM KEIFER.BACH CAN DEFINITELY SCREAM AND SING BETTER THAN DON.AND KEIFER?HIS VOICE IS JUST EXCEPTIONAL:RASPY(LIKE NAZARETH)AND FULL OF EMOTION.

Any way ,i think this album is not on the boundary of rock and metal but more of rock and pop, with mostly on the rock side of course, as expected of a hard rock band. This album is weaker and 'softer' than all of 80's dokken album.
|
From: Rockhead |
Date: April 30, 2004 at 6:18 |
jack-Why keep dissing Dokken's Cd's and making inane comparisons to other groups? 1. How is it weaker? 2. What are the POP songs? The majority of your comments have nothing to do with the cd's you are writing about, but rather a my dad is bigger than your dad scenario. Why don't you go to the notice boards and discuss the merits of one vocalist over another in the proper place.
|
From: jack |

sorry ,Rockhead! I like dokken and all but it is comparison to great band like cinderella, MOTLEY CRUE and bon jovi that makes me think highly of them. which also imply that they are maybe on the same mould as them. I PLACE THEM EVEN HIGHER THAN WARRANT,POISON AND EVEN RATT. i don't want to compare them to nirvana, korn or incubus(would you?)cause dokken is far better than all three o them put together!
|
From: jack |
Date: April 30, 2004 at 6:40 |
and Rockhead, i think it is weaker than the other dokken 80's album means that this album have more ballad(slippin away&will the sun rise), softer guitar riff(in my estimation) and more importantly, the most melodic album out of the bunch. Just Look at the music category at the title page!

Another stunning release. 'Unchain the Night' begs the question- does it get any better (in '85)? 'In My Dreams' is awesome and by now you're already marvelling at George's stunning contribution, 'Slippin' Away' is a beautiful ballad, 'Lightnin' Strikes Again' is killer hard rock, 'It's Not Love' is a highlight and nothing short of sensational, 'Jaded Heart', 'Don't Lie to Me' are both great and 'Will the Sun Rise' is another highlight, and 'Til the Livin' End' a great closer. Nearly perfect.

This is Dokkens finest hour. The playing is superb and the songs are among the best they ever wrote.'THE HUNTER','IN MY DREAMS' and 'IT'S NOT LOVE' stand out over the others but that doesn't mean the rest are rubbish. If only this line up could stop fighting and write more songs like these. Sadly it was all downhill from here. 9/10

Overshadowed by BACK FOR THE ATTACK...great album though. Also think TOOTH AND NAIL is better, as this is poppier. But thats just personal, as the production is an improvement and the melodies more refined...JADED HEART and the title track are the highlights, no doubt.

SIN LUGAR A DUDAS EL MEJOR DISCO DE DOKKEN. RECUERDO HABERLO PILLADO EN VINILO ALLÁ POR EL 87, CUANDO SE ESCUCHABA BUENA MÚSICA. ES MARAVILLOSO. NO HAY UNA CANCIÓN MALA. DESDE LA ENTRADA SOBERBIA DE UNCHAIN THE NIGHT, PASANDO POR THE HUNTER (QUÉ CANCIÓN, DIOS), IN MY DREAMS, Y LA SAGA DE SEMIBALADAS QUE ROMPEN: WILL THE SUN RISE, JADED HEART Y ESA CANCIÓN DE CARAMELO LLAMADA DON´T LIE TO ME. GENIALES MÚSICOS. GENIAL DISCO.

Wow this is the second from the Trilogy!!(tooth, lock, attack) I love the video from "Its not love"! every song is a winner here!, Neil Kernon did a great job producing this album! The sound still so fresh, even now that 21 years have passed since it was released. "Slipping away" should have be as huge as "Alone again" was. It also feautures two of the best Heavy metal tracks by Dokken: Lightin strikes again & Til the livin end! A must have! A+++

This is the ultimate CD. It has pacing, hard rockers, ballads, harmonies and memorable tunes for decades! Hard Rock does not get better than this. ULAK is ONE of the standards that all others try to measure up to. I do when I write songs.

Wow this is a classic hard rock album of the 80s! Great riffs, guitar works and hooky tunes like "Unchain The Night","In My Dreams", "The Hunter", "Will The Sun Rise" , "It´s Not Love" makes this record a must have in any hard rock/AOR collection. Highly recommended!

For some reason, I don't like this one as much as Tooth And Nail. It's like a toned-down version of T&N. Just doesn't seem to have the same fire, for the most part. Some great songs, like, "Unchain The Night," "It's Not Love," and "Lightning Strikes Again" is a real ripper ... but man, one thing Dokken DIDN'T have, for better or worse, was that carefree sense of fun that kinda defined the era. And the last two songs on this disc do nothing for me. "'Til The Livin' End" is just a watered-down rewrite of "Tooth And Nail."

this is the time that dokken started flirtinng with perfection.unbelievable production for that time,so polished and so not heavy metal, big backing vocals, excellent songs, this a truly big band.dokken , ratt and bon jovi through difficult heavy metal times kept the spirit alive and helped the most in what was going to be...anyway this is a killer melodic release by the mighty dokken

Brilliant album. Every song is great, by far the best Dokken album for me. My favourites are 'Will the Sun Rise' and 'Unchain The Night', absolute classics. Fantastic.

We're rokken with Dokken! Well, uh, actually, I'm not, 'cause I've just never understood the overwhelming zeal people have for this album. Nothing particularly wrong with it--God knows they did a perfectly acceptable (but nothing more, in my opinion) job of locking down that mid 80s hard rock style--but I just don't hear anything that makes me label this a classic masterpiece.

Dokken's vocals on this album are, in my opinion, at their pinnacle. Just listen to him hit the soaring notes in "Slippin' Away," an awesome ballad, or sample his vocal power in "Lightning Strikes Again." "Unchain the Night" is another example of how Dokken outshines most other 80's metal wailers [vocally]. This album is proof positive that Don Dokken is one of the 80's best vocalists. He injects passion and vitality into Dokken's songs....but Don would be "just another band" without their signature sound-- that of axeman George Lynch. His guitar talent and skill rivals that of other of the 80's best axemen-- no joke. Any of his solos on this album will prove that. The crisp, clean distortion sound that jumps off of his guitar in this album was/is one of the definitive sounds in 80's metal. ANYONE WHO IS NEW TO THE BAND SHOULD START HERE, THOUGH YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH ANY OF THE FIRST FOUR ALBUMS.

My favourite Dokken release. Unchain the Night is a great opener but lasts a little too long for me but The Hunter (very melodic), In My Dreams (catchy chorus and good rhythm) and Slipping Away (their best ballad I think) are all essential tracks. My favourite track though is Don't Lie To Me as it has a great riff and captivating vocals. Although fitting, Til The Livin' End isn't so good. Everyone on here should listen to this disc at least once.

In 1985 there were quality releases from Kix, Loudness, Stryper, Icon and Kiss. But my pick of the year 1985 (glory years 1982-1992) is Dokken's "Under Lock and Key". Always a fractious band with Don (band leader) and George (guitar hero) basically hating each other and at each other's throats, they somehow managed to release a string of good albums. This commercial sounding release had genre classics like The Hunter, In My Dreams and It's Not Love. Grade A.

To me, this will always be the definitive Dokken album. This was the first Dokken cassette I owned, and is still my favorite. Not a bad song on here. To me, the drums and guitar sound was perfect. I felt that BFTA, their next album, didn't have as good production, at least for drums and guitar as Under lock and key. Tooth and Nail was a pretty good album, but this one is to me light years ahead in song writing and production especially. This is one of those albums that come along once in a lifetime where everything lines up just right and a masterpiece is created.
