Tejas is kind of a forgotten ZZ Top album. You never hear any of these songs on the radio, and I don't think they figure prominently in the band's live sets. Yet at the time, they mounted a massive tour, complete with live farm animals, and semi-trucks with custom paint jobs that were supposed to depict some vast western landscape, and all had to go down the highway in a certain order to preserve the artwork. And yet the album itself is surprisingly understated. It sounds like Billy Gibbons is barely playing with any distortion at all, except on his solos. The funny thing is, just think how fucking HEAVY some of these riffs could have been if played with more gain. Songs like "Enjoy And Get It On" and "Pan Am Highway Blues" have monster riffs. Plus, "It's Only Love," "El Diablo" and 'Ten Dollar Man" all give Frank Beard a chance to really show off on the drums. "Arrested For Driving While Blind" seems the closest thing to a hit here, a typical fun-loving shuffle. Good, overlooked disc.
