It's really a shame the guys couldn't come up with just four more songs, because the six studio tracks here are easily as good as anything on Tres Hombres. "Tush" has been played to death on classic-rock radio, but is still a rollicking, sleazy good time. "Heard It On The X" has ZZ Top playing at top speed, its title referring to Mexican radio stations the guys liked to listen to (call letters beginning with the X instead of the American W or K). And "Nasty Dogs And Funky Kings" is one of their all-time unsung gems. But, unfortunately, the live side of the album is surprisingly not very good. "Jailhouse rock" is a tossed-off cover (and you get two versions on the reissue, which is really two too many), and "Backdoor Medley" was probably fun if you were at the show, but on record just seems to go on forever without going anywhere. |
