Probably the best BJ CD, IMO. The first 2 are great hard rockers, 'Born to Be my Baby' is commercial hard rock done as good as it gets, 'Living in Sin' is a gem too, 'Blood on Blood' still chills me today - wonderful track, 'Wild is the Wind' was always my personal fave off this disc... or at leat 1 of 3 faves. Perfect melodic rock. 'Stick to Your Guns' is a decent ballad, 'I'll Be There for You' is one of the best ballads ever written, that I do not doubt for a second. Some of those lyrics coul

...Some of those lyrics could send chills down a camel's spine! 'Ninety-Nine in the Shade' is also one of my secret BJ faves. Killer good time rock n'roll. Love it! I hate 'Love for sale' and 'Homebound train', but the rest is great. Magnificent CD.

From: The Overlord Date: March 18, 2005 at 19:17
what can I say, just WOW not one bad song on this one, well maybe Ride Cowboy Ride as an exsaption but besides from that one, wow! Lay Your Hands on me is the perfect albume opener, as well as a gig opener, the video also rules, bon goming up trough the floor, hehe, anyway this is as good as it gets, 99 is also very good, that solo reminds me of Mattias IA's playing, get the remasterd edition of this one!

A great record... Millions copy sellers One of my classics of Hard Rock from the 8o's My Hard n Heavy Radio http://radiohomepage.no.sapo.pt

From: metalmaniac777 Date: July 28, 2005 at 13:27
Geoff is right, 'I'll Be There For You' is one of the best ballads ever written. While 'Slippery' is (IMHO) a slightly better album, this one comes in a close 2nd, with the opening 2 songs being some absolutely killer rock anthems. The production still holds up well even by today's standards, which is pretty surprising considering the year this was released. No matter what state you find yourself in, 'New Jersey' will rock your world.

From: dcn Date: August 25, 2005 at 23:19
Para mi el mejor album de la historia ,ya no solo del rock, sino de lamusica en general, pura magia,fantasia,talento,imaginacion,emocion,fuerza,sensibilidad..un 10

From: Kip Date: September 13, 2005 at 13:14
Aside from Homebound Train, Ride Cowboy Ride and Love For Sale, this album is perfect! Lay Your Hands On Me is the only other track I never loved, but thats because all the other songs are freakin awesome. This is their best release ever. Talk about finding an album with one or two real gems, this has EIGHT! My favorites go in this order: Tracks 5, 4, 10, 3, 2, 9, 11, 7. Blood on Blood, Living In Sin and I'll Be There For You are 3 of my top 5 BJ tunes. I'll never get tired of this album. 9.8/10

From: mauricio Date: October 5, 2005 at 13:29
hi from COSTARICA, que decir de este NEW JERSEY. un clasico un bonito recuerdo su segundo mejor disco despues del slippery when wet un 9.5 /10 cuando bon jovi eran bon jovi.

From: zld Date: November 29, 2005 at 18:38
If 'Lay your hands on me' (great intro),'Homebound Train' (great hooks) and 'Love for sale' (funny lyrics) weren't on this cd i'll problably never ever played it again in my life. The lost their magic right after the first cd.

From: Axe-Machine Date: January 11, 2006 at 14:35
Wonderful record - perhaps Bon Jovi's finest. Bad Medicine, Lay Your Hands On Me, Blood On Blood, Living In Sin and Born To Be My Baby are some of the ultimate tunes by this band, and feature some amazingly good lyrics. Long live Bon Jovi. Love 'em! Essential.

From: 7Sinner Date: August 30, 2006 at 16:29
Probably not going to make many friends with this comment BUT IMO this release is highly overated and doesn't compare well to their first 3 cds. It's too commercial and bland...no standout songs for me. Now you can argue that the previous release (slippery when wet)was commercial and it most certainly was BUT it had some great songs, music and melodies unlike this one...needless to say this was this last Bon Jovi cd that I ever owned....

From: Metalmusicman Date: January 1, 2007 at 16:55
I have to, to a certain degree, agree with the last comment left. Is this a very good piece of AOR? The answer is without a doubt a resounding yes, but is it perfect? Close, but I'm affraid not. There are weaker elements here that are either filler or something like filler to me. Still, the good makes up for it as usual. Making it a worth wild purchase. We all know the radio gems, but don't forget 'Born To Be My Baby', 'Blood On Blood', and 'Homebound Train'. Very, very good, just not perfect.

From: metalhead4life Date: February 21, 2007 at 13:59
One of if not the best from the genre and Bon Jovi. Essential to any collection. This one may just edge out Slippery When Wet and S/T but all 3 are must haves. Bon Jovi along with Def Leppard were kings in this era and there were good reasons why. Both bands production were top notch; both were over the top; both had catchy good top notch songs and image. MONSTERS!!!!

From: SWING Date: June 7, 2007 at 16:30
Bon Jovi's best album.Born To Be My Baby,Blood On Blood,Wild Is The Wind and I'll Be There For You are my favorites.

From: z4roxx Date: June 9, 2007 at 13:03
Totally agree with SWING here,it's his masterpiece also for me...AWESOME!!!

From: headbanger4life Date: July 18, 2007 at 5:40
What another awesome release by these 80's rock idols. Fantastic live band as well. I saw them at Tokyo Dome on New Years Eve 1990 and they were killer.

From: shotgun messiah Date: July 22, 2007 at 7:36
It's the album that estblished bon jovi at rock/metal pantheon!

From: Lennie Date: August 20, 2007 at 8:07
Some filler, but contains 2 of my favourite melodic hard rock tracks.......'Wild Is The Wind' and the awesome 'Born to be my Baby'....best BJ song ever? Might be.

From: 80's Hard Rock Date: August 25, 2007 at 7:00
So much has already been said, but I just wanted to say that this album is so good that even the youth of today listens to it over here in Finland where I live Always when we're driving with my car my friends say:'Put some Bon Jovi on man!'and I surtainly put it onThis is probably THE best album of the 80's,so superb.I can only wish that there will be another 80's era so that there will be more records like this one. This kind of music is what we're living for.Born To Be My Baby on my funeral.

From: Rambo Rockerman Date: January 20, 2008 at 11:19
Kip is exactly correct,Aside from Homebound Train, Ride Cowboy Ride and Love For Sale the rest is good.

From: Scrounger Date: July 20, 2008 at 17:37
Bad Medicine is okay, but yet more pop and filler. Along with 80s Aerosmith you can barely hear any guitar in Bon Jovi's music, it all fades out until yuo get synth, sugar and Jon's overrated vocals that sound so forced andstrained on all these Desmond Child and outside written tracks....

From: CECILIA_BONJOVI Date: September 3, 2008 at 0:20
LONG LIVE TO BONJOVI!!!!

From: CECILIA_BONJOVI Date: September 3, 2008 at 14:01
98/100

....BORN TO BE MY BABY......JUST THE PERFECT SONG TO GET IN THE WEDDING RECEPTION!!!!!!!!!!!! I DEDICATE THIS SONG TO THE LOVE OF MY LIFE,MY INSPIRATION,MY EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!

From: rick kerch vzla Date: March 15, 2009 at 21:58
With the same formula as their "Slippery When Wet" mega album, this one is also packed with great songs."Lay Your Hands On Me"(what a classic starter!!!,a great song indeed),"Bad Medicine"(the first single),"Born To Be My Baby"(very cowboy-ish),"Blood On Blood"(dedicated to all his frineds, perhaps childhood memories)&"I'll Be There For You"(one of the nicest BJ ballads ever!!!).This album is along with their "Slippey" essentials in your music catalogue.95/100

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: March 16, 2009 at 13:30
This one came out right at the time I was starting to get into hard rock, and that's probably why I like it over Slippery When Wet. That, adn these songs haven't been completely beaten to death the way the Slippery ones have. Really nothing I don't like here, although "Homebound Train" and especially "Wild As The Wind" don't really stick for me. New Jersey does contain one of their best, most overlooked songs ever, in the pairing of "Ride Cowboy Ride" and "Stick To Your Guns." Anymore, when I pull out this tape, it's most likely just to hear those songs. Used to love the video for "Lay Your Hands On Me" as well.

From: rockhardrock Date: May 26, 2009 at 18:10
right next to slippery when wet. i think they became stronger here, more close to hair metal than pop metal.again this record is well produced. my favs: Lay Your Hands on Me, Bad Medicine, Born to Be my Baby, Living in Sin and I'll Be There for You

From: True Believer Date: May 31, 2009 at 8:09
I hear many Bruce Springsteen influences in the best tracks from this CD. For example, "Born To Be My Baby" borrows the melody from "The River", and "Living in The Sin" is similar to "Factory". The majority of other songs is very good, with the exception of terrible "Bad Medicine" and stupid "Love For Sale". Overall, great effort. 8,5/10

From: Put-Put Date: August 11, 2009 at 6:30
still the best bon jovi album ever

From: edwithmj Date: February 25, 2011 at 19:50
This one starts off poorly. Lay Your Hands on Me is one of the most boring songs I've heard. After that are three excellent songs and the rest is hit and miss. Blood on Blood never seems to end, ditto for Wild is the Wind. I'll Be There For You is a half decent ballad and the rest is so forgettable I can't remember how they go. This one's worth it for songs 2, 3 and 4.

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: February 25, 2011 at 22:32
I guess I should be embarrassed to have admitted that I like "Ride Cowboy Ride," as the lyrics appear a thinly-disguised reference to anal sex. But I prefer not to think about that. Thank you.

From: JOVIAOR Date: July 14, 2011 at 15:38
Born To Be My Baby, I'll Be There For You, Wild Is The Wind, Bad Medicine , Living In Sin, Blood On Blood, Stick To Your Guns and Lay Your Hands On Me is the reason why New Jersey is what it is "A MASTERPIECE"!

From: hair metal again Date: July 16, 2011 at 1:29
releases like NEW JERSEY are the reason that we are hard rockers.no need to say much ths is a masterpiece and "i ll be there for you" is one of the songs of my life!

From: 123charpenay Date: December 30, 2011 at 11:34
a little different than the 3 first records.this album have a bruce springteen s influence.but it stay excellent.bon jovi is a legend!!!!

From: HEAVY PARADISE Date: August 25, 2012 at 11:40
My personal favourite Bon Jovi cd. Everything here is perfect. The songs, the attitude, the feeling.....everything!!!!!!!!!!

From: 123charpenay Date: September 17, 2014 at 14:03
i can add to my last comment to be very honest that there is four fillers tracks 6.8.11.12.of course this great record is not at the same level than his predecessors.nevertheless all serious fans of melodic hard rock have this cd in their collection.i recommand so,the 1998 japan reissue (2 cd s) with seven bonus tracks (six live and one studio outtake song (excellent) "love is the war"

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: September 17, 2014 at 20:48
I'd heard this was actually supposed to have been a double album, but the record company didn't think fans would pay the higher price, even as popular as Bon Jovi were at the time. You can still find the original, double-disc version for download out there in the dark corners of the Internet.

From: 123charpenay Date: September 18, 2014 at 14:06
to doghouse yes it s a "de luxe edition" two cd s.in france we says "quand on aime on compte pas" "when we love we don t count".all the jap reissue of 1998 are at a very expensive price on ebay.logic these records are some rarities.

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: September 18, 2014 at 19:40
Yeah, man, the "Deluxe Edition" that was officially released this past year has a lot of those extra songs on it, but the bootleg has a bunch more than that even. I don't have mine right in front of mee, but when I do, I'll post the track list. A couplle songs from it later wound up on Richie's first solo album.

From: 123charpenay Date: September 19, 2014 at 16:43
yes doghouse.generally deluxe edition is a trap for die hard fans like us.for me the better "de luxe edition" is the de luxe edition of "pyromania" def leppard .the second cd is an extraordinary concert (15 tracks) in los angeles.you can buy it closed eyes.

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: September 19, 2014 at 17:50
Oh hell yes! That live Leppard disc from '83 is better than their "real" live album Mirror Ball, by far. I'lll take a complete, good-sounding, vintage live show as a gonus disc any day. But the New Jersey demos and outtakes are neat to hear.

From: MelodicRocker Date: February 8, 2022 at 12:31
These 11 real tracks are so good they need no explanation. One of the top ten melodic rock CDs ever, of course, just ultra-brilliant at a time when Jovi could do nothing wrong! 5 top 10 hits, utter brilliant. The sound is excellent also more than 30 years later. What a combination Bruce Fairbairn and Bob Rock was, totally love this sound! No wonder other big artists wanted to use these guys too in the following years (Crüe, Metallica). Ride Cowboy Ride is just a ploy song, it does not hurt, overall result is maximum score. If New Jersey does not get full score, no other album deserves neither, in my book. In the 80s Bon Jovi dominated so much it is hard to grasp. Yes, Slippery is full score too. Both ridiculously amazing discs. (Outtake tracks Love is war from Living in sin cd-single and Jovi's Boys are back in town, would make two excellent bonus tracks.)

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: February 8, 2022 at 20:34
If we're being honest, "vove For Sale" is pretty stupid too, Jon and Richie sounding absolutely hammered (or pretending to) while tossing out a hokey hillbilly novelty song. So that leaves ten proper songs, including two that I almost never listened to even back then. These days, Bon Jovi is a band I indulge in only rarely.

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: February 8, 2022 at 20:35
Obviously I meant "Love For Sale."

From: MelodicRocker Date: February 9, 2022 at 10:48
Ya Doghouse, you are correct in that a lot of fans probably don't listen that much to this type of "fun songs", including Love for sale. But still lots of people totally adore this album. You have to remember the band came from the huge success that was Slippery, then got almost rushed out of the studio in '88 to get back out on the road, Mercury Records wanted to milk the profits to a maximum really. Still they came up with, whatever no. of AMAZING songs (8 if ya will), and an album that gave them the record for most top 10 singles to come from a rock album; incomparably well done no matter how ya look at it. But replace Cowboy and Sale with Love is war and the cover of Boys are back, and life's good

From: Lasse Date: February 6, 2024 at 9:56
MelodicRocker, spot on!! This album was, and still is, HUGE! Didn't know about most top 10 singles, that is truly impressive given the time pressure. Always liked Love Is War too and finally it was included on the Deluxe Edition. Bob Rock did so well behind the mixing desk at the time and has since praised the band for their work ethics. 2024: Jon Bon Jovi is this year’s MusiCares Person of the Year! Jon giving help to people thru his JBJ Soul Foundation and JBJ Soul Kitchen, is something more rich rockers should do. Hat's off to him!
