|Excellent disc from the ex-guitarist from Whitesnake. John Sykes has excellent vocals as well as great song writing. "Billy", "Black-Hearted Woman" and the touching ballad "Out of Love" highlight this disc. A must for any 80's metal fan or Whitesnake fan.

|"Club-footed so-called "supergroup" comes off as a real bore. Whitesnake on a bad day?" And you know folks it's not to far from the truth! The production is what sounds weakest! I mean it's like Bob Rock slept during the sessions! Sykes is a "good" musician, what on earth was he doing hangin' with Franklin & Appice?! I mean, he would have fair just as well picking up some "street musicians" in Vancouver, where this was recorded... Listen at your own risk... 3.0

|Jelly Roll and Out of Love are highlights of this album. Sykes is impressive vocally. Previous comments are interesting. Can agree in one aspect that the Bass sounds very thin for a Metal band. Other than that, a recommended buy. Cheers!!

|How much crack have koogles and sixxswine been smokin when they listened to this CD This album is an absolute masterpiece. Sykes is one of the most incredible guitarists around. If you liked the whitesnake 1987 album, this is a must have..

|Fantastic release, just goes to show who was behind Whitesnakes massive 1987 album. This release is by far and away the best Blue Murder album, and in the top 10 of all time Hard Rock albums. A must for any serious Hard Rock fan. A+++++

|There are a few cool bluesy numbers, especially tracks 4, 6, and 9. Mostly it's rather slow and a bit dull. Not quite Whitesnake.

|I can remember way back when I saw the video for "Jelly Roll." I thought to myself "Hmmm.... Nice try, but it's lacking." After that I had this feeling that the whole album was more than likely the same way. I don't know? HELL, these queers put out three albums so maybe it wasn't so bad?

|great album, i had to see their two videos for valley of the kings and jelly roll and a tune on the radio (the title track) before i bought it.i have it on vinyl..there's a fun story attached to this album..there was a band in holland called blue murder with a dito song..john sykes bought the rights on the name and the song and released it himself..true story.. firstname.lastname@example.org

|very good album,highly recommended to any 80s hairbands fans. just judging from all the negitive responses i noticed they are comparing them to whitesnake? i don't think sykes wanted anybody to compare his group to one he was noted for playing with before. try forgetting whitesnake and it might sound a whole lot different.

|This CD ROCKS--Sykes is one of the best axmen ever--Varry underated--You can tell SYKES by his styl of play--A must have CD--He sings great too. P.S.-Coverdale Fired Sykes after makind WHITESNAKE self titled release,he said sykes wasn't flashy enough in play and proform.-Listen to the harmonic on this CD-Thats flashy!!!!!!!!

|Brilliant hard rock. After Whitesnake, Sykes passes the test. His vocal is also high. The guitar screams in the same tune as it was in Whitesnake 87 record. However this album is somewhat different and can be called as a "dirty Whitesnake".

|Whitesnake 1987 was a true classic that set the bench mark for others to follow in that era.Blue Murder came out and took the direction of this album one step further.Sykes,Appice and Franklin out did themselves with this fine opus.It wasn't as commercially accepted as the whitesnake disc but this was killer never the less.Excellent musicianship,epic songs fuelled by high octane vocals.An unbeatable combination of fine players and songwriters.

|y'all who put this band down are trippin'. your sense of music is somehow askew. carmine and tony are awesome studio/tour musicians. they've been backing up the biggest names in rock forever. john sykes is an awesome guitarist. this album on it's own rates higher than any white snake i've heard, as good as whitesnake was. listen to this album again if you don't think it's very good. it's original, great production, the guitar work is great, awesome chord voicings... listen again...
||Date: October 25, 2002 at 9:19|

|I love this album! Next best thing to Whitesnake but in some ways...better! John Sykes is the man! And as for Carmine Appice on drums: Ozzy tapped him to fill in for Tommy Aldridge on "Bark" Tour back in 83/84. (Check out the video for Bark at the Moon! There's Carmine!!!)

|This is indeed Whitesnake '87 part II. Which by no means negative! In terms of metal bombast, this band can equal Black Sabbath. John Sykes guitar playing is very good too. It is not the Yngwie-shred type of speed playing but just simple rock licks played incredibly fast. Six good songs out of nine ain't that bad.

|The best Whitesnake album since 87.
||Date: May 25, 2003 at 17:53|
|True Mr. Sykes did co-write the songs on the classic Whitesnake Whitesnake album. But I don't think this album sounds anything like Whitesnake. With that said I think it's just as good. I had the opportunity to see these guys live twice and both times they were great! It is with great regret that I must report that I didn't like anything they did after this album.This album is 10 on a 10 scale everything else is a 3 or 4. I am a HUGE fan of Mr Sike and wish he was in Whitesnake again.
||Date: June 9, 2003 at 5:25|
|Well here I go being redundant but like most of the above reviews state this is basically another "Whitesnake 87" and that's not a bad thing. Kind of has a classic 70's Zepplin-ish quality to it which was a bit of a contradiction to EVERYTHING hard rock that was released in 89'. Probably threw a lot of hard rock fans off. Sykes is great here and this still stands the test of time!! Check it out.

|A very solid piece of music. Good studio production. Heard this album 1990 while in Spain. Out of love again, valley of the kings, classic. Wished more tracks were on the album though. yet, still of the night, looking for love might just tip blue murder's album.

|For all of you who have put this release down for sounding like Whitesnake, you are idiots, how can you expect it to sound like anything different, John Sykes is an incredible musician and writer...HE IS still producing today, where is Whitesnake? Gone, because John Sykes was the sound of Whitesnake, Coverdale didn't want to keep Sykes in the band because he was jealous of his abilities and talents as a front man. This CD is definitely a 10.

|I was expecting Whitesnake due to the above comments but it sounds a lot more like late 80's-early 90's Black Sabbath (which are my favorite Sabbath albums) IMO. Sykes sounds similiar to Tony Martin and a lot of the songs not only have that Sabbath feel but the lyrics are pretty dark as well. Great album and Sykes guitar playing is awesome.

|John Sykes continues the great showing he had a Thin Lizzy's last album and Whitesnake 1987 with Blue Murder. Hard rocking epic tracks (Valley Of The Kings), good Zeppelin like ballads (Jelly Roll), and heavy rocker (Riot) are what hard blues rock should be. The only negative is the bad cock rocker Sex Child. 9/10

||Date: August 13, 2004 at 21:11|
|This is possibly one of the best 80's rock albums hands down... Sykes can just flat out shred... Franklin and Appice are great with him... solid without overplaying... Whitesnake's 87 album was dripping with Sykes (Is that why Cov sacked him?) Sykes will join the ranks of axe slingers who have bounced from band to band and made each one better with his prescence... Tygers of Pan Tang, Thin Lizzy and of course Whitesnake! Sykes is a maestro!

|I loved this cd in 1989. It came across strong and made its point. I recall Blue Murder & King's X opening up for Billy Squire & they blew his pop ass completely off the stage. Today I've decided I don't like it anymore. It does suck production wise. Hairband production was horrid for good bass players & fretless guru Franklin fell victim here. Sykes & the Boys are no slouches but everything here is circumstancial & set to the era. "Ptolemy" & "Vally of the Kings" are the only redemption.
||Date: October 9, 2004 at 18:12|
|Read most of the other reviews and, I really liked drinking to this back when it was new. Thought they were one of the better of the endless line of 80's (or was it 90's, can't remeber just now) "hair bands". I like this album alot. True, if you liked Whitesnake u should like this. Not stellar, but much above average for the times. A couple of really good songs here, if you liked the era, you snould like Blue Murder.

|This is not a Cd I enjoy listening to sometimes. No, this is a Cd I often WANT to listen to, even 15 years later. I must have listened to this one 10000 times and still enjoy it. The rythm section is huge, simply huge. Saw Appice and Franklin in Paris very lately with Pat Travers. With all respect due to Mr Travers, it made me wish for a Blue Murder reunion... Only Carmine hits the drums a bit too hard, this man is a pure brutalizer !!! Tony Franklin is really a great greta bass player.

|Man is this a good disc! I had it on tape years ago but kind of lost touch until I bought it on CD a couple of weeks ago. Musically stunning. The ballad, 'Out of love' is sensational and 'Ptolemy' reminds me a lot of 'Live fast die young' by Roxx Gang - very similar riff! Who'd have thought! Either way, this is a killer CD and all the songs are of very high quality. Great stuff.

||Date: June 4, 2005 at 5:28|
|I bought this CD because of Valley of the Kings, one of my all-time favorite songs, but it wasn't enough to save the disc, so I got rid of it. I don't really remember much about it, so it must have been unremarkable to me. Like Blue Charvel, I like the sound of the guitars, and Sykes has a great voice, I think it was just poor songwriting. However, even this disc put Slip of the Tongue to shame. I bet Coverdale wishes he still had Sykes around...
||Date: June 14, 2006 at 6:32|
|average album! there is only three excellent songs: ´riot´, ´billy´ and ´black-hearted woman´. Main riff of ´black-hearted woman´ is very similar to whitesnake´s ´bad boys´, but this song is fantastic!!! but what is ´jelly roll´? absolute poor song! but live (screaming blue murder) this song rocks!! songs 1,7 and 9: 10 points, all other songs: 4 points. overall 6 points.

|John Sykes from Whitesnake stikes out on his own and his new project, not surprisingly sounds a lot like Whitesnake with a heavy 70's guitar vibe. I really enjoyed this one, but I found it a little up and down in song quality. The songs "Jelly Roll", "Out Of Love", and the epic "Valley Of The Kings" are just magnificent. It's what lies in between that is kind of a let down. Still very good, just not essential to me.

|Fantastic album. Sykes claimed at the time that if you wanted to hear what happened to the sound of the Whitesnake 1987 album, you should get this one. I think the sound is very different from '1987', but in terms of quality he was spot on. Great tunes, great guitar, great songwriting. All of the songs are brilliant, I would perhaps suggest that 'Billy' and 'Ptolemy' are standouts as they are even better than the rest.
