Heavy Harmonies Review
From: Dan Date: March 16, 2003 at 4:46
So... What's going on in Sweden these days on the hard rock front? Well, apparently there's a new band in town: United Fools. Most of the bands that I've heard from Sweden have opted to go the route of traditional Scandi AOR (Treat, Skagarack, Fate, etc.). Not these guys. They come at you with more of a gritty blood-and-guts hard rock approach, less polished, but heavier and more rocking overall. Comparisons with The Cult are in order. This self-titled effort is a debut release, and while not perfect, shows a lot of potential. The production and mix suffers a little bit in places, but that's to be expected.

Some of the songs have a bit of a "modern rock" flair, but never stray far from a traditional hard rock base. The instrumentation is pretty basic, and the performances seem reasonably tight. Standout tracks are Rain and the ballad Wish You All the Best. I won't lie and claim that this album gets a lot of rotation in my CD player, but by the same token, I can't come up with any glaring criticisms either. As a freshman effort, it's definitely worth a listen.

Rating: 78/100

THIS is definitively the BEST EVER band-name I heart of! Aren't we all fools sailing on the seas of tragic and absurd minds..??! And don't repeat the word "fuck" all the time!

The album is well produced and there are good performances, in particular guitarist Mattias Strelvik who doesn't get to shine as much as he could. So, if you've got a penchant for raw, down and dirty rock then United Fools will most likely give you the thrill you're looking for.

This is a pretty good hard rock release although I don't hear too much "modern" influence..thank god!!
