Excellent album. I was really impressed with this when it came out. Tracks 1,5 and 7 are my faves, but this whole album rocks. I would venture to say it was sort of new wave of heavy metalish. Not enough good things to say about this one.

Great pomp rock album with hard/heavy guitars. The keyboards of Mark Stanway really give the songs a new dimension and Catley's voice is superb.

From: Fredrik Nilsson Date: May 11, 2002 at 5:57
Third time's a charm! This was their best studio album up to that point, and my second favorite Magnum album of all time. Highlights include Soldier Of The Line, The Spirit, Sacred Hour & The Teacher. 10/10

Outstanding!I love this album. The SPIRIT lives on!!

If you haven't experienced Magnum playing 'Sacred Hour' live....well, you have my sympathy. 'Soldier of the Line' and 'The Spirit' are also part of rock music's essential moments. It is perhaps on this album that Bob Catley really began to show his true class, and to this very day he remains one of the best rock vocalists ever. Just incase you haven't heard the good news.... MAGNUM'S NEXT ALBUM 'BRAND NEW MORNING' IS DUE OUT SOON!

From: Lennie Date: March 24, 2005 at 17:04
Each of the early Magnum albums had 3 or 4 stand out tracks. On this it was 'Soldier of the line', 'The spirit' (a huge guitar solo ending) and my favourite Magnum song of all time 'Sacred Hour'. To be honest yr better off picking up their recently released 'An intro to Magnum' for about a tenner which has got all the classics on one disc...that is an essential purchase. Or even better the live 'rock/pop legends' album.

From: illimey Date: March 25, 2005 at 18:05
The previous message about this album from Lennie is obviously the work of a madman! [No offense intended, Lennie, but the men in white coats are on their way as I type... ] Your comment "To be honest yr better off picking up their recently released 'An intro to Magnum' .... Or even better the live 'rock/pop legends' album" is unadulterated baloney. Y'all need to get ALL Magnum's STUDIO albums! If you MUST get a compilation get the 'Long Days, Black Nights' 2CD set. Live? Get 'Stronghold'

From: Lennie Date: April 3, 2005 at 13:11
I still think that 'An Intro' will provide a good and inexpensive basis for people NEW TO MAGNUM to assess if they like their early stuff. Simple as that! This is not the comment of a 'madman' as suggested by 'illimey' but of someone offering a good alternative which in all fairness does include most of their stand out tracks from the era. And it only costs a tenner.

Fantastic album! One of the best bands ever, in my book. The four first songs on this disc are incredible....sheer CLASS! Their best album, along with the following "Eleventh Hour".

From: Remastered Reason Date: November 22, 2006 at 22:33
Nice blend of pomp keys with heavy guitars, killer lead vocals & perfect backing harmony vocals. Own it now.

Some Magnum fans consider this one as the 'Holy Grail' of their discography, and whilst I wouldn't totally agree with that, what'Chase The Dragon'is, is a brilliant entry into the Magnum discography and an absolute must have album. Pretty much agree with the above, in that the first 4 tracks are all excellent, 'Soldier Of The Line' and 'Sacred Hour' especially being two mighty fine slices of English Pomp and to this day, 2 of the best tracks the band has ever written. So 3 studio discs into their career and 3 essentials - pretty damned impressive if you ask me!!

Best album of the time before OASTN, the rest is history.

From: rbrigade Date: August 15, 2013 at 5:00
If there's one must have album from Magnum this is it! Soldier of the line, The spirit, Sacred hour, pure pomp rock paradise. How on earth could this material stay unreleased for 2 years and not sell millions in the US, that's beyond me...

From: hair metal again Date: February 18, 2015 at 8:31
excellent release for MAGNUM in the early 80s and a classic for them with a massive heavy pomp sound ,strong production and many good songs!the musicianship is fantastic and the band seems to have many ways to deliver!all the songs are remarkable and i believe that this is an album that defined MAGNUM and pushed things further for them!
