Heavy Harmonies Review |
From: Dan |

This one arrived unexpectedly, and I'm glad it did! This album is basically the predecessor to Purple Cross, which I reviewed about a year ago. I enjoyed that album quite a bit, but I'm enjoying this album oh so much more! This is top-notch AOR/melodic rock! Harmonies everywhere. I still find cliches everywhere in the writing, but it doesn't seem to bother me as much on this album (then again a year has passed since I reviewed Purple Cross; perhaps I owe it another serious listen). The songs seem to grab me more on this album than the followup. Production/mix is first rate, and there's plenty of material to tap your toes to. The title cut is a first-rate ballad, and (this is going to sound weird) the lead vocalist reminds me a little bit like George Michael on that track (I mean that as a compliment). Plenty of keyboards throughout, but not overdone. Most of the songs are uptempo pieces. Stylistically I'm reminded of Fair Warning, but without the bombast. I hope this album doesn't get overlooked due to distribution (I'm not sure where in the states you can pick this one up), but any self-respecting AOR fan seriously needs to get this disc. It's incredibly solid. Purple Cross has a new album coming out late this year, and I'm definitely looking forward to it! Rating: 90/100

This one was way too soft for my likings and very much in the keyboard filled AOR field. I didn't think most the songs were very good personally, but I can say with complete sincerity that the first track, 'Up to you' is nothing short of sensational. A stunning track on a pretty decent AOR release but they saved the best for first and didn't really back themselves up, IMO of course.

This is very good, and alot better than the Purple Cross disc. The songs on this are quality AOR all the way, 'Up To You' especially, but what really makes this for me is the Vocalist Mervyn Spence (who you may remember from the 2 excellent O'Ryan discs - 'Something Strong' and the mega 'Initiate') a great great voice and a highly recommended album.

Up to You(2 otra JOYA), Save the Night, It's Magic, Screamin, Love in the rain...

This is superb pure AOR.The keys are not properly in some places and the guitar is very light, but man, what precious crafted songs! And Mervyn Spence own the sweetest voice in the business,so clear and beautiful,he's a revelation to me here, one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard. This album MUST BE in your AOR collection.9/10

This is AOR. But not when it's at the top. It's very average stuff. I think Purple Cross are much better. But if you like Beau Geste then check it out.

If you like soft AOR, this one is for you. The sound is a bit too 'soft' for me, but it's still enjoyable.

Great AOR album without a single filler. Reminds me very much of Talk Of The Town's debut. "Up To You" and "Screamin" are killer songs. "Angel In My Heart" "Save The Night" and "It's Magic" aren't far behind. The rest is very good, but not as killer as those 5 tracks.

Wonderful release or at least pretty pleasant for AORsters at heart (i suppose )...in my case,i loved it almost in its all!!!..."Up To You" is a great mid tempo with a catchy chorus,"Angel In My Heart" excellent,"Can't Stop Loving You" is a beauty of a song,"Save The Night" has a catchy beat,"Love In The Rain" is another excellent track along with "It's Magic" & "Screamin'"...in general lines,a very good effort and if you have to choose between this debut and their second album Bridge To Nowhere, choose this one right away!.92/100

Esse é um album para ser indicado para aquelas pessoas que estão iniciando no AOR. Ótimo exemplo do mais puro AOR ao estilo Journey e Foreigner. Músicas preferidas: "Up To You", "Two Of Us", "It´s Magic" e "Screamin´". Altamente recomendado !!!

This awesome AOR release is from the former Swiss band, PURPLE CROSS of Swizerland. With vocalist Mervyn Spence (ex-WISHBONE ASH - PHENOMENA) singer and guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist George Miller, this CD belongs in the collection of every AOR lover. It's better than PURPLE CROSS....... top-notch AOR/melodic rock with many cliches, containing an endless array of potent hooks and memorable tunes, all of which make for a very desirable listen. The sound compares to GOLDEN FARM, NORWAY, PHIL VINCENT and when at their best, to FAIR WARNING and AVIATOR. Every track's a winner and there’s not the faintest whiff of filler.
