This CD isn't the old Junkyard we knew. I say avoid. IMHO..

Junkyard's debut is on my short list of late-'80's hair-era overlooked classics. Just love that disc. Everything else they've done has been at least enjoyable. So here, a quarter century after their last proper full-length studio album, we have eleven new Junkyard songs (due to a screwup with the printing of the limited edition, I don't have the bonus tracks yet). Honestly, High Water sounds about like I expected it would. Songs like "Walk Away" and "Wallet" try for that punky, uptempo "Life Sentence" feel, while most other songs remind more of the more laid-back feel of Sixes, Sevens and Nines, ratheer than the nitro-fueled debut. All the songs are good, but nothing is as indelible as "Blooze," "Hot Rod," "Hollywood," etc. And that's all right--the band never promised us a carbon copy of the first album. Instead, it sounds like what you would expect Junkyard to sound like at age 50. For a style as seemingly limited as theirs, there is surprising diversity among the songs, from almost

... Stonesy rockers like "Cut From The Same Cloth" and "Styrofoam Cup," to a couple more AC/DC-ish songs like 'Faded" and "Kindness To The Dead,", to the aforementioned punked-up tracks, and a few southern-fried touches here and there (most notably "Don't Give A Damn," which hardcore fans will remember in a different form from the XXX demo compilation). "We Fuck Like We Fight" is a classic, snide Junkyard relationship song, David bitching about his girl being glued to her iPhone--and somehow not coming off like a desperate plea for relevance like some oldeer artists who throw around the latest tech terminology to try and seem hip. So--after listening all weekend to not only this, but also the new Rhino Bucket and Broken Teeth releases (all released Friday), High Water is a good, satisfying, but not quite great album.
