Compared to the other Van Halen albums, this is a darker sounding album!! This album rocks much harder than Women & Children First!! The songs are well written too, but still, not quite as good as the first two albums!!!!!!!

From: Desslar Date: April 5, 2002 at 12:03
Not nearly as energetic or fun as the other Roth albums. Unchained is great, but other songs are a bit dull.

From: jabe Date: October 10, 2002 at 19:19
Jeez... Anyone who would find this cd 'dull' should lay off the valliums. Not only does this cd kick the crap out of 750f the drivvel reviewed on this site, This is probably one the best 6 or 8 metal albums ever.

From: Van Alan Date: November 10, 2002 at 23:39
Still a top notch CD from Van Halen. Unchained and Mean Street are two of the best VH songs ever in my opinion. It's a shame only one song from this CD made it to the Best Of Volume 1 set

From: Todd Date: March 25, 2003 at 21:04
Mean Street is my alltime favorite VH song.

From: Hot-Rod Date: April 12, 2003 at 19:35
The BEST hard rock guitar album...........PERIOD!!!!!

From: RichieRocker Date: April 12, 2003 at 21:35
Hot Rod this is my favorite all time album, and the guitar work by Eddie is awesome as usual, my favorite solos are on 'Hear About It Later' and 'One Foot Out The Door'. One the biggest animalistic rock bands ever to grace our presence on the planet.Rock on Friends!!!!

Excellent hard rock album here. 'Unchained' still plays frequently on my stereo!

From: sparkyass Date: January 25, 2004 at 1:54
kickass, kickass, kickass, kickass, you get the picture. probably their best album ever with the possible exception of the first album. the greatest rock guitar solo ever is the middle of meanstreets, its got tone, phrasing and gobs of really doesn,t get much better.

From: red Date: February 7, 2004 at 16:37
My favorite Van Halen album. Everything is on about this one. We have songs that sound like their previous stuff, but we have some heavier, darker songs as well.

$2 used, replaces my cassette of what is easily my favorite VH album. I like pretty much everything from the Roth era, but this one just seems a lot more edgy than the rest. Eddie really gets down on this one.

From: Date: February 22, 2004 at 5:09
This is not only the greatest Van Halen album but also one of the top 5 hard rock metal albums of all time. It is THE greatest guitar album of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Incredible guitar work. Freaky solo's with tons of emotion. Like nothing you've ever heard before. Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen and everyone else can bow down to the greatest Rock guitarist in the history of the world. Fuckin' amazing!

From: Impaler Date: February 23, 2004 at 0:30
I've never been able to get into this album. 'Unchained' will always stand the test of time.

From: Atomic Punk Date: February 28, 2004 at 11:18
It is very difficult for me to pick a favorite Van Halen album. But if I had to it would be this one. I am in full agreement of some the other comments above...very tasty guitar solos on this album. How Sunday Afternoon In The Park ended up on the album I'll never know. But the rest of the tunes are TOPS! I think Roth is at his finest on this album as well.

From: Metal T Date: June 18, 2004 at 17:37
Classic VH !---Too d*mn bad they suck now .Thanks to the 2 'Mr.Ego's' EVH and AVH .Read an interview where Eddie says he's happy to have Sammy Back. After reading that i almost vomited into the magazine.I can see them all sitting around on the tour bus ripping on DLR. How he is this big jerk and this and that.'Fair Warning' is still the sh*t,along with the rest of Roth' era VH. Used to have a ton of respect for EVH, but now ive wised up . ----

From: Rycheage Date: June 27, 2004 at 18:27
This was an angrier, moodier Van Halen, exemplified by opener 'Mean Street' with its dark vibe, mostly from a downtuned series of murky riffs from Eddie, giving it a heavier overall sound than it's predecessors. This is easily the most forgotten Roth era album. The sound was more bleak, even in the upbeat numbers, giving it an almost undescribable aura.

From: Big Papa K Date: June 30, 2004 at 16:30
Van Halen change their sound on this album into more of a darker territory. The new style works as they continue to crank out great songs ('Mean Streets' and 'Dirty Movies'). The only song that would really fit in well on the other albums, 'Unchained', is one of the bands best. 9/10

From: Uusiolli Date: August 5, 2004 at 22:17
Great record. Better than 2 before and quite near the debut. But listen Hear About It Later and Rolling Stones' Let's Spend the Night Together (or Keel's version). Am I the only one who notices something? 9/10

From: GlennVanWiddle Date: August 17, 2004 at 17:30
Two words: 'Dirty Movies'. Just ****ing listen to it! NO BAND IN THE WORLD sounds as individual or as good as that, or possibly ever will again. All players playing different parts that magically sound perfect together. One of the true classic moments in rock!

From: jack Date: September 10, 2004 at 7:55
There is just one word for this album-perfect. Considering this album was released in 1981,it is way ahead of time. Every songs here kick-ass. There is no band out there that is as creative and influencial as the great van halen, not even nirvana or korn with all due respect to those two bands.

From: Metalhead66 Date: November 17, 2004 at 13:12
Well now we have some wear on the tires. There are some dings in the Body...Maybe egos are getting a little BIG!! Well that all makes for GREAT MUSIC. The best bands had these Problems ,Every One of them. Anger abounds as do tempers and we can hear it WELL!! This is The Mis-understood VH Record. Damn it MOVES the air doesn't it!!Eddie makes the most of this by cussing and screaming with his Guitar! David yells right back with some of this BEST lyrics!!10/10!!!!The Rest of the guys Hold on!

From: Propane Date: December 3, 2004 at 16:07
Their best so far! These dudes just kept getting better and better with each and every day. Mean street was an awesome opener.

From: edwithmj Date: September 25, 2009 at 12:58
Unchained is the only good song here and Roth still can't sing properly. I was very disappointed with this.

From: hair metal again Date: December 26, 2009 at 9:25
