well,well,well...would you believe it! a melodic rock band from puerto rico.i dont no you guys but i have always been curious in checking out hard rock bands coming from different exotic countries all around the globe; so when i came across this band i was wondering myself what to expect but didnt have a clue.actually i remember reading a couple of fanzines comparing mattador to a harder edged bon jovi so with great anticipation i put the disc on to find out the answers by myself...and what do

From: ROB GARCIA Date: February 14, 2004 at 5:37
i hear? excellent melodic rock with hard edged guitars and cool keyboards but to be honest i dont see any bon jovi connection in here, actually the first thing that striked my mind was victory! yeah they sound very much like victory although i dont think the germans never sounded as serious as this guys.tony collazo's vocals are a deadringer for fernando garcia and musically they are very much in the same level.well if this is what to expect from puerto rico then i must say i want more!!.

Rob, have you tried Syndia from Poland or De 5 from Denmark? I really like De 5, but haven't heard much from Syndia. Liked the samples I heard. I haven't heard Mattador yet.

From: ROB GARCIA Date: February 15, 2004 at 8:44
hi tim, nope im afraid i havent heard neither of the bands you mentioned are they any good?.i believe that de 5 sing in their native language, isnt that correct tim;wich one do you recommend the most?.if you havent heard the mattador album yet you should rectify that pronto, that is of course if you like victory 'culture killed...' or 'temples of gold' era they are really worth it believe me.if you cant find this album, try escape music i do know they used to do the distribution for this a couple

From: ROB GARCIA Date: February 15, 2004 at 8:44
of years ago.good luck!.

From: TIM Date: February 15, 2004 at 12:23
Yeah, De 5 is sung in Danish. I recommend the one with the black cover. Not sure if they are both self-titled or not? I'll have to wait on Great Dane or Kristian to tell me that. Syndia is sung is Polish. I'd like to get this one while it's on Ebay, but a tad broke at the moment. Delbert has it, so I'll try to get some samples.

From: TIM Date: February 15, 2004 at 12:25
Both lps of De 5 were on Gemm.com. The cd of the second one goes for $762, so I think lp would be the better route. I wonder how close Mattador and De 5 are in sound? Maybe nothing alike?

From: AOR freaky Date: February 19, 2004 at 5:24
Good, nice AOR record. And De 5 is a collector's item only. Not bad, but not worth the money asked for it !

From: Rycheage Date: March 18, 2004 at 23:47
Their progressive attitude is exemplified on the opening track 'Fear (HIV)', mixing musical power with news broadcast voiceovers describing all the various viral epidemics. The best ballad on show is the delightful 'Tired'. Some others worth mentioning include 'If You're Gone' and the title track. Their closest attempt to melodic rock is 'Hear Me Calling', where Leo's keyboards can be heard more distinctly through the solid guitar mix.

From: Delbert Date: August 23, 2004 at 23:19
This is an excellent indie that is definitely a prog metal release with strong melodic rock and AOR influences. They remind me a bit of Queensryche on the 'Operation Mindcrime'. The keys often have a Deep Purple influence. Certainly a very talented quintet. They have great songwriting skills

From: Delbert Date: August 23, 2004 at 23:21
The track 'If You're Gone' is without a doubt perfect AOR with great guitar, keys and beautiful harmony vocals. This is truly a complex disc with some beautiful moments like the atmospheric acoustic 'Tired' or the title track. Shame nothing appeared from these guys after this release....

Great melodic rock CD. I was just listening to the excellent Storm disc this morning, and man does this guy sound a lot like Mr Chalfant. Always been a great vocal album for me, this one, as he also reminds me of Ted Poley. Great vocals, some great songs and overall a good melodic hard rock disc. Much liked.

Killer album by all means!!!...ok pretty similar in sound and concept to Dream Theater(Images & Words era) but with a particular touch...great vocals courtesy of Mr Tony Collazo and the rest of the guys doing a marvellous job too ...best songs 4 me are "Fear(HIV)","If You're Gone"(wonderfully nice),"Live Your Life Not Mine","Save Us From Ourselves","Hear Me Calling"(AORish ) & "In And Out Of Trouble"...highly recommended album...and yes, not only Puerto Rico is related musically talking to Ricky Martin ...they have great bands like this act...94/100

MATTADOR debut is an excellent release and i d love to hear more from those guys!i d say that they perform hard rock music with a progressive edge ,but always with a commercial approach!the musicianship is great , the songwriting pretty satisfying and i must add their strong personality as a band which is quite impressive!"if you re gone","all behind me","save us from ourselves" and "in and out of trouble " are the highlights of this essential release
