The music discographies on this site are works in progress. If you notice that a particular American Dog CD release or compilation is missing from the list above, please submit that CD using the CD submission page. The ultimate goal is to make the discographies here at Heavy Harmonies as complete as possible. Even if it is an obscure greatest-hits or live compilation CD, we want to add it to the site. Please only submit official CD releases; no bootlegs or cassette-only or LP-only releases.

EPs and CD-singles from American Dog are also welcome to be added, as long as they are at least 4 songs in length.

Can't believe I never commented on Neanderthal, as American Dog were one of my favorite bands, and I was pretty high on this album when it came out. It's definitely one of my top-three from the boys, and was a welcome relief after the worryingly mediocre Poison Smile. Everything you love about American Dog is here, plus a second guitarist for an even fuller sound—and as a trio, they sounded huge! When "Carnivore" hits maximum roll coming out of the first chorus, you can't NOT break out in a grin. Elsewhere, the band's obsessions with alcohol, dirty women (of both the bad and good kind) and blue-collar perseverance are all in full effect. "Sun Won't Shine" is kind of a swampy, southern-gothic epic, while "Stuck In The Mud" is the amped-up punk anthem to fighting working-class ennui. "We Ain't Gonna Not Get Drunk Tonight" is less stupid than its title, and better still with a couple cold ones in your belly. The party wraps up with the extended, heavy plod of "Devil Inside." Unfortunately

... Neanderthal would prove to be the band's swansong except for a compilation a couple years later called Unfinished Business. I still enjoy this band immensely, even though I'm not really the kind of person their music was aimed at, and it's become harder to let some of their more willfully dumb moments pass.
