Harem Scarem is far underrated. Great Vocals and Lyrics, even better Musicianship. Guitars kick major ass. Get It Get It Get It!!!

This HAREM SCAREM debut album is like a perfect definition for high energized AOR. Every melodic rock fan should have one ! Check out the japanese version with 3 amazing bonus tracks : acoustic versions of 'Slowly Slipping Away', 'How Long' and 'Hard To Love' - a must have

From: Jos Carlos Date: February 25, 2002 at 12:31

From: West Of Sunset Date: March 29, 2002 at 6:06
Contacto:www.haremscarem@eresmas.com

From: Reno Date: April 28, 2002 at 17:32
I don't think I'll ever get sick of this cd. Great musicianship. They should have stuck to the sound of this cd and their second. They kinda lost a few steps after the first 2

From: Steve T Date: April 29, 2002 at 10:31
Excellent debut. Great songs, playing and huge hooks. BUT...the best was yet to come

From: Craig Date: April 29, 2002 at 21:42
Shows signs of what was yet to come. Later albums ventured away from AOR and entered into melodic rock territory. Not their best effort (my least favourite album actually), but as far as debut's go: Nothing comes close!

From: koogles Date: July 4, 2002 at 8:32
Harem Scarem nailed the AOR formula on their first shot and then, instead of repeating and rehashing it, went and outdid themselves with 'Mood Swings'. The first 6 songs on this disc are where the action's at, and if you've ever pitch your tent at Honeymoon Suite's campsite, then this is something you NEED to get.

From: freddy de keyze Date: August 25, 2002 at 9:20
You all kwow by now that I don't like this band at all, but this, their first is a good one. Fair is fair. A pity they changed their style that much, so they are now rubbish !

From: MALLORCAS ROCK Date: August 31, 2002 at 17:38

From: goodyear87 Date: September 7, 2002 at 20:57

From: METAL 4 EVER Date: September 8, 2002 at 21:12
This is one of the greatest cds of all time, every song is worth puting out as a single. If you don't have this cd get it. And if you can find the ultra rare Acoustic Sessions (Limited Edition) cd, get that one as well. It is Acoustic versions from the s/t, well worth it. Metal 4 Life

From: TIM Date: September 23, 2002 at 0:33
Is the best of worth getting or is it not that great? I don't know what the songs on it are.

From: ROBERT Date: October 20, 2002 at 11:29
Absolutamente genial!!!!

From: scott Date: October 22, 2002 at 23:01
one of the best cds of all time they are harry and pete are 2 of the best songwriters ever.wish they would make it in the usa

From: Janxy Date: January 1, 2003 at 17:07
Not much to add to the praise of this album. A very consistent, radio friendly album. Difinitive AOR - infectiously melodic - satisfaction guaranteed.

From: Teo_3 Date: January 14, 2003 at 2:16
For fans of DANGER DANGER and alike this is a must-have album. A masterpiece with jewels like 'Hard to Love', 'Honestly', 'Slowly Slipping Away' and definitely no weak track.ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE. Try to find their DVD with the best songs from every album.

From: Gar Date: January 21, 2003 at 21:06
Great cd! I can honestly say there are no bad songs or filler on this. The songwriting is top notch and the musicianship is phenomenal. You can't ask for more.

Iv'e been playing this to death over the last week and this Still sounds great 12 years after it's initial release, this is first class Canadian Melodic Rock/ AOR of the highest calibre and is my Favourite release from them by a long way.

From: Emilio Date: March 21, 2003 at 7:04

THE BEST HAREM SCAREM'S ALBUM!!! MASTERPIECE!!!

From: Chris Date: June 2, 2003 at 16:48
This is the best release by Harem Scarem. Everybody seems to favour 'Mood Swings', but this one does it for me. This album is possibly the last really classic AOR release. I can't really think of any album that came out after this, that i could honestly give a 10/10 rating to. And yes Freddy we agree again mate, this band really suck (BIG TIME) now.

THESE GUYS ARE GREAT NEED TO BE PUT UP WITH THE LIKES OF POISON,MOTLEY THEY CAN HOLD THERE ON ONE OF THE BEST SLOW SONGS I KNOW HONESTLY ,WITH A LITTLE LOVE,SLOWLY SLIPPING AWAY ARE TWO POWERFUL SONGS TO MAKE THE CD A 10

From: Chris Date: July 19, 2003 at 1:05
This by far is the best cd I have in my collection. I just found this cd and I can't stop playing it, every song kicks a$$. Honestly is one of the greatest power ballads of all time, and the video for it is awesome. This album is definitely a 10/10, now I need to get Mood Swings.

From: John Date: August 20, 2003 at 16:46
Harry mastered the catchy AOR formula in just about every song on this disc. Impeccably produced, there isn't a clunker in the bunch. A cd that deserves the 9/10 designation.

From: pablo Date: September 6, 2003 at 9:45

I think this the best Harem record. The most hairmetal thing for sure. 'Slowly sleeping away' is the best song Harem ever recorded...With a little love' second best song....that kind of choruses you can't find it anywhere else( maybe in Emerald Rain but they are little worse).....what else? Strong buy!!! check out also The Early Years album...has the same feeling like here....

HAREM SCAREM - 'HAREM SCAREM' - OH GOD, I STILL LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM. WITH A LITTLE LOVE IS THE BEST MELODIC ROCK SONG THAT I EVER HEARD !!!

From: PODEROSO YIRO Date: January 1, 2004 at 23:56
FANTASTICO DISCO DEBUT! COMO POCOS, ENVIDIABLE, CON ESTE DISCO HAREM SCAREM IMPONEN SU MARCA REGISTRADA CON LAS ENERGICAS VOCALIZACIONES DE HARRY HESS Y LA DESTREZA GUITARRERA EN LOS RIFFS Y PUNTEOS DE LESPERANCE. EXCELENTES TEMAS, MELODIAS Y EN RESUMEN UN HARD AOR ESPECTACULAR. 'HARD TO LOVE', 'WITH A LITTLE LOVE', 'SLOWLY SLIPPIN AWAY' Y LA HERMOSA 'HONESTLY' SON INDISPENSABLES DE ESCUCHAR

From: Blaine Date: February 2, 2004 at 20:33
Truly an underrated CD; I still play it and crank it up!!! I wish it was remastered with 24bit technology. Four songs from this disc always got airplay on OZFM in St. John's, NFLD, my ex-hometown. Similar to Winger's first CD. No radio station here in Vancouver, BC, will play it; they chose to play repetitive rock like Queen, REM, The Police, The Cars, and Foreigner. What a shame!

From: Blaine Date: February 2, 2004 at 20:35
The best word I can think of to describe this CD is 'craftmanship'.

This is the most underated Canadian bands to this day. I don't know why bands like Nickleback made it big, and harem scarem didnt. Harry Hess's vocals are amazing and pete's Guitars playing is to die for. What talent these 2 guys have as musicians and song writers. I wish they would play more often in their home land Canada or more specific (Ottawa). I seen them like maybe 10 years ago in Ottawa and man they are gods. Now all they need is that one big hit with lots of air play in the states. And

Agreed this is one of the best CD's ever. This is their best, followed by Mood Swings, Weight Of The World and Highher You must own this CD. Period.

From: Meradona Date: May 5, 2004 at 11:27

From: LM Osasuna Date: May 25, 2004 at 14:23
A mi me pas'!

From: Rycheage Date: May 28, 2004 at 12:28
One of the impressive features of this album is that the songs are so strong and classy, and as we roll from one track to the next, your hunger pangs get worse waiting for the next morsel. Another lesser fact is the subtle layer of keyboards underneath, giving Lesperance's guitar that extra height and dimension sitting atop it. I think you'll find no disagreement among the melodic rock brethren about how good this Harem Scarem debut is, full of shimmering melodic vocals. Great AOR!!

hmmm, not sure what hapenned to my comment on this one, this is a newly known one to me, thanks to HH, and this is hands down, a masterpiece, in my car for a few months, and I feel guilty cause when it is done, I put it on again, just plainly, a classic!!!!!!!!

From: AOR freaky Date: March 30, 2005 at 2:52
It's their only classic AOR record, Swriter. Mood Swings is still good, but the rest of their releases is utterly modern CRAP, and it gets worse with every new release !

Definately their finest hour by far, but all their other release have somthing to offer for the more open minded of us, especially 'Mood Swings' & 'Voice Of Reason' & 'The Early Days'. The Japanese version of the debut also has the bonus of the Acoustic sessions ,to round off a perfect 10/10 release.

From: Geoff Date: March 31, 2005 at 4:03
Stunning peice of melodic rock, this one. All songs are killer, and ultra melodic but the first 4 steal the show. 'Hard to hold' is as melodic as music gets, 'Distant memory' is the perfect mid-tempo melodic rocker, as is 'With a little love'... and 'Honestly'. What do you say? The most heartfelt, moving gem ever recorded?! Stunning songs, brilliant band. And one of the few bands that rarely disappoint, their 2 recent releases, 'Mood swings' and 'Believe' being simply amazing too.

From: TIM (2) Date: March 31, 2005 at 17:59
Whereas I've grown to love all their albums (except 'Voice of Reason') this will always be the album I return to the most often. My faves would be 'Slowly Slipping Away', 'With a Little Love' and the spine-tingling acoustics of 'Something to Say'. Lesperance's influence would increase on the albums to come - and I rate his solo album alongside this in terms of quality - but they always manage to remain melodic while updating their sound too. I, for one, cannot wait for their new CD. 10/10.

From: meradona Date: April 13, 2005 at 12:03

From: Rafo Phoenix Date: April 15, 2005 at 0:17

From: Rafo Phoenix Date: April 15, 2005 at 0:24

From: Joshy St. Jaimz Date: October 18, 2005 at 6:15
Absolute bliss. Arguably the band's finest offering. Every track here has an incredible hook, whether it be guitar riff or chorus line, this album's got it all. A true testament to this album's lastability is the fact that it's still in print today (albeit only in Canada and Japan) A true melodic masterpiece. If you like this check out their album 'The Early Years' which is basically a continuation of the work on display here. Great stuff.

TO LOVE-DISTANT MEMORY-HOW LONG-ALL OVER AGAIN-

From: mauricio Date: December 18, 2005 at 13:47

La producci'n es una delicia, las guitarras, el bajo, la bateria, esa voz de Harold Hess, todo impresionante. lots of attention on this one....but i really dig their follow up "mood swings" not only for its heavier sounding but for lyrics arrangements improved musicianship...this first s.t. release is good but nothing's so special 7,5/10

From: Whitesnake Date: May 27, 2007 at 8:43
Harem Scarem is IMO superb melodic hard rock. I agree with You girapolli, even though I'm normally a fan of AOR. "Mood Swings" is more impressive, if You take a look at Lesperances guitarplaying. It might be heavier, but at the same time that album got those melodic choruses. The debut is a 9/10 to me, but "Mood Swings" is a 10/10.

i´m not gonna say this isn´t bad or that it is good, but one thing i have no dought, it´s the kind of pradictable stuff that came out in the begining of the 90´s that helped grunge take the lead! to me it´s 3/100.

After this big discussion I've heard again this one tryin'to be critique and not fan.The opening is a good one but the followin'2"Distant memory"and"With a little love"are among the best songs in this genre."Honestly"is a very good ballad and"Love reaction"is full of energy even if the refrain isn't so spectacular."Slowly slipping away"is a fantastic ballad,"How long"could be the last remarkable song here, all the rest is excellent but not great.Definitely"Mood swings"is better also for me....

From: z4roxx Date: June 17, 2007 at 9:49
It's logic that my comment is among all others, just wanted to be clear about this cd and in effect this isn't among the best in the genre even if 2 songs are for me among the greatest ever heard in melodick rock scene...Honestly I did have buy the japan press for the 3 bonus but now I don't do the same maybe...And what about the front cover???Ahaha it's horrible!!!!

From: fenixx Date: July 2, 2007 at 17:48
it takes some time to understand why a lot of people consider this and other stuff here in HH to be rock classics. but finally i got it!!! there are missing a lot rock classics here! bands that are so fuckin important in hard rock history missing here!! what a big gap! i´ll start with some exemples: HUMBLE PIE, FREE, FACES,DIAMOND HEAD, MOTT THE HOOPLE, IAN HUNTER, T REX etc... i could go on, are´nt they the titans, or lets say the ground where hard rock started??? hard rock starts in the 60s.

As many others have said, Harem Scarem hit the jackpot with their first album, which I think is their classic rather than Mood Swings. To my ears their subsequent output has been patchy. On my own compilation of Best of HS, 8 tracks from this album make it (and 2 from the Early Years album)with Higher being then next best with 4.

From: aor4sale Date: August 21, 2009 at 9:40
One of my all-time favourite albums. An easy 11 out of 10. There is not a filler insight with this baby. EVERY AOR collection should have this in it - your collection is incomplete without it. Nuff said...

From: metalmaniac777 Date: March 4, 2010 at 11:52
As impeccably flawless as a harem of airbrushed Swedish supermodels, with production as smooth as the satin skin on their inner thighs. Honestly, it's downright scary how good this CD is, a world-class example of how melodic rock should be done, chock full of catchy hooks, pristine melodies, layered vocals, and poignant lyrics. With nary a filler in sight, every song on this album is a gem than can make the hair on the nape of your neck prickle up with pleasure. Saying you're a melodic rock fan but not owning this CD is kind of like saying you're a Chinese cook who doesn't have any soy sauce.

How international stardom seemed to avoid this band is beyond me. This is one of the strongest debut albums I've ever heard. Great melodies, hooks and vocals that give shivers! 9/10 cause nothing will ever be perfect but this album gets close!

Melodic bliss with ballads, rockers and very passionate vocals. There isn't one bad song on the whole album.

Awesome AOR! 'Slowly Slipping Away' is their greatest track - EVER! It catagorises AOR! It was also the video/single release from the album, so they knew it too. What the hell happened to them after this? It was horrendous. 'I live in the past,'I hear you say. Crotchets and quavers never die, no matter how much you want them to.

There's only one word to describe this album...MASTERPIECE!!!...great songs from head 2 toes...the japanese edition brings 3 lovely acoustic bonus("Slowly Slipping Away","How Long" & "Hard To Love")that in their electric versions are just killer ones!!!...apart from that "Distant Memory","With A Little Love"(fantastic!),"Honestly"(killer solid ballad),"Don't Give Your Heart Away"(catchy)& "Something To Say"...powerful vocals courtesy of Mr Harold Hess and a very compact musicianship...in general lines this album MUST BE in your collection by all means if you are into the melodic field of music...100/100

This album is fantastic, perfect songs, perfect production, perfect debut, it´s like mixing Van Halen with Def Leppard, a great surprise when I heard it for the first time. Indispensable!

OVERALL GRADE: B- BEST SONG: A- (Slowly Slipping Away) FILLER: Not really...every song is above that level...This is one of those albums that you can play start to finish and not think of reaching for the skip button. Only disclaimer is that after listening to it most tracks don't standout/distinguish themselves from each other...except Slowly Slipping Away Definitely worth a listen and multiple re-listens... Agree with all the positive comments above. The band should have been huge. According to Lesperance, Harem Scarem launched in 1991 at the worst possible time, just as Nirvana was sparking the Grunge movement. “Our timing was horrible, had we been out five years earlier, who knows what might have happened.”

From: Doug Date: October 23, 2019 at 16:29
Finally got my hands on this one. I get how everyone likes this album, and I like it too. This is a band I stumbled onto later in their careers and for me, I have to say I like their newer material better. I guess that's a good thing when it comes to having a lasting career, huh?
